movies that are effective (not just alien movies) have characters and conversations you care about. good movies likedistrict 9, unforgiven, alien, pulp fiction and super 8 have this awesome believable dialog that almost makes me feel nervous. And when s**t goes down and people start getting hurt or killed by space herpes you feel an authentic anxiety for them. Movies that fail like Battle of LA have stupid characters with stupid conversations and I don't care if they die.

What's insulting and actually rather suspicious is when aliens are portrayed as aggressive invaders out to kill and destroy humankind. This is utterly ludicrous. Any aliens out there will be friendly and loving, or at worst indifferent. Any alien that has the technology to get here (faster than light travel undoubtedly being possible simply because science's entire history has consisted of proving itself wrong eventually) would have the technology to have already destroyed us. A sufficiently advanced civilisation will also be spiritually advanced enough not to want to go around destroying and acquiring things it encounters.
The reason movies about "bad aliens" are suspicious is because one has to wonder if there is some sort of agenda here. Many media companies are ultimately owned or influenced by the military industrial complex, who are always on the look out for the next boogeyman to scare us all with and request trillions of dollars of our money to fund the fight against. The wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, and even Al Qaeda have been shown comprehensively to be hoaxes to large extents). One wonders if we're all being psycho-prepped for some invented 'alien' threat. Ludicrous? Never say never...fore warned is fore armed as they say.

Humans pretty much disprove everything you say just said. Humans throughout the course of history have developed technology that has allowed them to traverse distances that were impossible for other people. And when they got to those people, many times they sought conquest.
Given what has taken place throughout human history, it is not impossible to believe that aliens could simply be going planet to planet to strip mine earth. I think what is unbelievable about these alien films is that given the advanced technology, that we stand any sort of chance.

"Any aliens out there will be friendly and loving, or at worst indifferent"
"A sufficiently advanced civilisation will also be spiritually advanced enough not to want to go around destroying and acquiring things it encounters."
Those are quite the assumptions. The "spirituality" you speak of are based on the moral values we perceive as correct by human standards because they're the only ones we know.
Just as life can be diverse in so many, many ways we can't even begin to imagine, so can be their morals.
Some advanced species may be so advanced that they don't have any morals, they just exist to exist and don't care if others exist or stop existing.
Just like we don't care if we spray insecticide to kill bugs, we don't question the morality of doing it, we just do it.

What I think is unfair is that people say something like you did, assuming that war mongering hate filled ground combat loving aliens species capable of interstellar travel don't exist.
Considering how many stars are out there, I think that is as ridiculous as assuming there is no intelligent alien life in the universe.
Alien species that would wipe out all human life, may have some amount of fun with us first.
