After Caprica was cancelled, I figured I was done with television.
The Walking Dead changed that. Decently written, well acted and great special effects have me wanting more and more of this show. Bonus points for being a zombie horror story that was developed right up the road from me in Lexington, Kentucky.
Cannot wait until season 2 starts.
frankzullaDec 7, 2010Submitter
I cannot either. I think it will be tremendously better in the 2nd season which is saying a lot considering how well executed it's been. I'm hoping the new writers will go a long way to improving an already excellent program.
arschgaudiDec 8, 2010
Somehow I manged to miss this show, than I caught a preview of it over the weekend. Wound up downloading all the episodes and watched them back-to-back Saturday and again Sunday.
I was a little disappointed in the season finale though. It was like one of those mediocre BSG episodes, you kept expecting some revelation or great twist. Looking forward to Season 2, plus Breaking Bad and Mad Men.
bionicpimpDec 8, 2010
This show is just like BSG in that it's not science fiction, it's fiction with a science-y coating. IMHO, this episode of the walking dead dealt with a realistic existential dilema. If there is no hope, wouldn't it be better to "die with dignity"? How should one prepare to die?
(answer: Liquor and a hot shower :-D)
***spoilers***
The doctor character seem to almost have a russian fatalism to him. How many times did he say "I can't control that, it's out of my hands". What I got out of the group's escape, and the doctors response to their escape was that "even when it seems like there is no hope, there is always hope..."
arschgaudiDec 8, 2010
Ah, there's the difference, you were looking for context. Me, I wanted brain eating.
inhumanityDec 8, 2010
LOL
babywookieDec 8, 2010
I don't get all that "no hope" s**t. Out of all the apocalyptic scenarios, the (slow) zombie epidemic doesn't seem all that bad. Once you survived the initial panicky, high casualty phase, you just have to find a remote place where you could chill for a few months, until all the geeks starve and rot away. It would be tough, but there should be enough food, medicine and creature comforts left around to last you a few years, while you try to rebuild some semblance of society with other survivors.
It's not like it's "The Road" type of scenario, which seems almost completely hopeless.
lexxvsDec 8, 2010
Yes, you are right. Plus, the USA is flooded with undisclosed nuclear shelters, many of them private, because of decades of cold war paranoia. If you watch old videos you can even see how the advised their construction. Obviously no one tells their neighbour: “by the way, my home has an old nuclear shelter so you know, in case of emergency bring the whole town and even the dogs and cats round here.”
One of those huge shelters famously was busted when used to grow cannabis underground.
Ah, and obviously the government have them bigger, stronger and much better energized.
angrychadDec 8, 2010
For the life of me I can't understand what anyone sees in this show. It's horrible. Maybe if I didn't know how mindf**kingly awesome the comic was I wouldn't be so concerned with the stupid in-fighting characters and gigantic plot holes.
I didn't want a rehash of the comic, but is something that's at least half as intelligent too much to ask for? Apparently so.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
l800lemmingsDec 8, 2010
They fired all the writers it's gonna be different
danielbroadbentDec 8, 2010
That's been clarified quite a few times. They were not fired:
http://insidetv.ew.com/2010/12/03/walking-dead-darabont-hurd-writers/
TheNewRealManDec 8, 2010
I agree with you on the writing, acting, and effects points that you make. I even agree with you on the Kentucky props, because my wife is from Kentucky. However, I am getting a little fried on the drama. I am all about good story lines, but I also have certain expectations when watching a zombie show. We essentially wade through 90 to 95 percent drama before we get our 5 to 10 percent of zombie action. I need more breaks from the drama more often.
tomgfromcanadaDec 8, 2010
woooh! Caprica. RIP
ballerjonesDec 8, 2010
I think it's a bit naive to renounce television after one sub-par sci-fi went under. Why not try diversifying? The Wire, Mad Men, 30 Rock, etc. These are all top-quality shows in their genre. In fact, I'd be willing to bet they're all better than Caprica and The Walking Dead.
shadconDec 7, 2010
Best show on TV by a longshot...
danielbroadbentDec 8, 2010
Really? C'mon. I just watched Damages, Rubicon and Terriers get cancelled in one year. Seems if you put celebrity dancers or zombies in a show people will watch. Put impeccable writing / acting in a show and it fails miserably.
kaiosamaDec 8, 2010
We can always pretend that Dexter hasn't been picked up for a sixth season? Or that breaking bad isn't coming back next year for a fourth season.
rogpog777Dec 8, 2010
Ummm...Boardwalk, anyone?
angrycat70Dec 7, 2010
Just goes to show if the writing is strong that you can make an excellent product.
grammerpantsDec 8, 2010
But we already knew that. More likely it goes to show that on the right network a well written show won't get canceled after the first few episodes.
vegas702Dec 7, 2010

vegas702Dec 7, 2010

karthvaderDec 7, 2010
I'm so glad this show got made. I barely watch TV, but AMC is becoming my favorite channel.
theratdotusDec 8, 2010
is Walking Dead streaming legally anywhere?
somedrunkDec 8, 2010
The premiere was showing on Hulu, but I believe they stated no other episodes would be. Not sure if it's still up.
prestonoDec 8, 2010
It's all over the torrent scene.
hipmanDec 8, 2010
"legally"
arschgaudiDec 8, 2010
I don't think there really is any infringement issue with a tv show torrent, since the ruling regarding the legality of VCR recording years back
sandurzDec 8, 2010
I still get DMCA notices every few months on singular episodes of new shows. I got one for last week's episode of 30 Rock. Not even from a premium channel.
Straight doo-doo butter is what it is.
Not that I really give a s**t but my university seems to...
rumbleroastDec 8, 2010
Amazon video on demand has it for $1.99 an episode in standard def and $2.99 an episode in HD.
starbirdDec 8, 2010
iTunes has the full season in HD for $15.99. DirecTV has them on Demand. I think all of them, but perhaps not.
hipmanDec 8, 2010
I guess it might've been more dramatic if you didn't see the escape coming. But who didn't?.
raazurinDec 8, 2010
I just love that every time they think they've found a good sense of security, anything but zombies screws that up. Love it!
starbirdDec 8, 2010
agreed. And agree you saw the escape coming, but since it was filmed before it was picked up for season 2, I thought it was a good season (and if needed, series) finale.
godsbongDec 8, 2010
The 2 things I'm slightly disappointed about; the lack of episodes per season (6 just seems to low for my liking), and that Season 2 will not be released for another year.
I understand the argument of keeping to the graphic novels, but its already strayed from them. So what would be wrong with adding a little more content, thus extending a season passed the 6th episode.
Everything else though is brilliant, and the series deserves the recognition its getting.
hipmanDec 8, 2010
It will have 13 next time.
godsbongDec 8, 2010
Wooot, I'm ok with 13 episodes for Season 2. Just disappointed of only getting the 6 for season 1.
arschgaudiDec 8, 2010
AMC seems to be running short seasons on all it's shows.
rogpog777Dec 8, 2010
First seasons usually get short runs, then either get renewed for a second season, an extension for the current season, or the Terriers axe.
justjohn025Dec 8, 2010
I think most shows do a short first season because if the ratings are low and they cancel it after the 1st season because of that, it's not a waste of money.
babywookieDec 8, 2010
Check out Dead Set, while you're waiting for the next season. That's another 6 episodes of great zombie action for you.
kaiosamaDec 8, 2010
The 6 episodes were on account of the fact that no one thought a zombie show could actually work.
withearsDec 8, 2010
I like the fact that the storyline is different from the graphic novel(s) and yet still very true to them.
jonnymjDec 8, 2010
That. Some people bitch when a show or movie strays from the source material but really... You have already experienced that story, why do you want the exact same thing just with moving pictures and not experience something new however so slightly.
dausdiggDec 8, 2010
great zombie tv series, bad i'm dissapointed with the last episode of first season...
blacklilyninjaDec 8, 2010
it was a damn good show

Great show, I am sad that it is over for a while. It is an interesting take on how the last people on Earth deal with the fact that the world is over, as Jenner said "This is our extinction level event". Seems the cracks are already showing, season 2 should be pretty insane.
nerysDec 8, 2010
so what the HELL is going on with serasons?
a HALF SEASON. HALF is 13 episodes. a FULL season is 26 episodes.
I was annoyed at scifi "changing" a season to 20 episodes and now AMC has decided a season is 6 episodes? is that a joke? thats a "miniserioes"
I have to wait a freaking YEAR for more episodes AND the next season will only be a "half" season 13 episodes?
will anyone even freaking REMEMBER this show in a year?
why am I so mad? BECAUSE I LOVE THE SHOW but if you screw people over like this.....
6 freaking episodes. Grrrrrrr

exactly, With a lot of shows with 22 - 24 episodes you get a lot of episodes that just do not advance the overall story at all. Look at Fringe which is a very good show but could actually benefit from fewer episodes IMO so they don't need as many monster of the week episodes.
danielbroadbentDec 8, 2010
Fringe is a great example of a show that would be better with 12-13 episode seasons. I've always hoped that either Showtime or HBO would attempt an hour long sci-fi based show. There hasn't been a non-campy, well acted and well produced sci-fi show in the history of television (including the new BSG). Imagine the potential of a sci-fi series with the production value or Boardwalk Empire and the writing caliber of Deadwood / The Wire.
babywookieDec 8, 2010
Check out Dead Set, while you're waiting for the next season. That's another 6 episodes of great zombie action for you
nerysDec 8, 2010
thanks will check that out (downloading now) its a much shorter show though (22 minute episodes instead of 42) hopefully it will be good :-)
nerysDec 8, 2010
but I LIKE the filler episodes as much as the non filler episodes.
and yes that is why some first seasons are "half a season" or 13 episodes. to "feel out" a show. then if it works you go full season 24-26 episodes.
6 is 1/4 season and 13 is HALF a season. I refuse to call them a season. now its no longer a "good show" but a god damned TEASE mini series and we have to wait over a year for anything more and even then only 13 ?
Grrr makes me mad.
seroevoDec 8, 2010
21-24 episodes is primarily an American network thing (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX).
If you look at the vast majority of shows on Showtime, HBO, FX, and AMC et al over the last 10 years, it's rare for a season to exceed 13 episodes.
nerysDec 8, 2010
wow your right. at first I was like no way and hit google. I don't watch to many of these shows I guess but I searched a few I could recall
tudors - rome - breaking bad - sopranos
ALL 13 episode seasons. wow. that sucks :-)
I was really itching for 20+ good zombisodes to make me happy a year :-( I never realized those shows had such a small number of episodes. it did not "feel" that long between them then again I tended to get into them rather late so I could download multiple seasons and just watch them all which might explain it :-)
I just wish it was not 1 year between seasons. I could handle 13 every six months :-)
pitipong44Dec 8, 2010
Hey.I like it but I wathched 3 season . I want see but no vido in thailand.
firefish45Dec 8, 2010
I'm starting to get very bored by this show. It seems like it's a very very dragged out movie.
jpdeveerDec 8, 2010
You are dumb
seroevoDec 8, 2010
I don't entire get it either. It's ok, the characters are likable and all, but there isn't really anything I haven't seen before in other zombie or disaster movies.
A lot of the fanfare seems to stem from either fans of the comics, or younger viewers (under 20) that maybe haven't seen many older movies yet.
stridernemesisDec 8, 2010
I think Lori's pregnancy may ruin the series, if the writers make too much soap opera drama out of it and waste a lot of episodes while doing so (which is exactly what TV writers usually do). We don't need that in a series like this one.
cyberdorkDec 8, 2010
Did you read the comic??? I think half of any issue is dedicated to soap opera story lines. It's come so far that whenever Lori or Carol is on a page I skip it.
I absolutely love World War Z, and I really like the apocalyptic atmosphere of TWD (in the comic). But Kirkman's way of character development is waaaay too soapy. Sometimes you get the feeling they care more about who sleeps with whom instead of the zombies around them.
jpdeveerDec 8, 2010
The personal story lines set Walking Dead apart from other zombie movies. People whine issues, but they get punished when they are too wrapped up in them.
jpdeveerDec 8, 2010
Lori is going to die.
raazurinDec 8, 2010
The interesting thing is that they've gone so far as to keep Shane alive past Atlanta. I think that the writers here have established that they are free to change the story line by a crap load.
lostinseganetDec 8, 2010
It deserved it. It was great.
losscoachlisaDec 8, 2010
love, love, love this show!

Good overall show, decent character mix and spin on the typical zombie genre, however I enjoyed the BBC 2008 Survivors TV series much more. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00q3gk5
If walking will pick up the pace a little in the second season it'll be a solid show. Excellent cast and crew regardless.

6 episodes and then a long wait? meh.
I think I won't watch anything until all the episodes are done airing now, I used to wait at least when it's in season 3.
Why watch anything on tv when you have to watch commercials, deal with all the time involved, and you have to deal with cancellations?
There's nothing better than downloading all the seasons and watching them at your leisure, you just have to go a little back in time.
Right now I'm back in '98 watching La Femme Nikita, and I look forward to watching the new Nikita when it's finished.
The networks are just harming themselves by pulling this sort of thing: more commercials, shorter episodes, shorter seasons with more time in between seasons. Even people with DVRs will be pissed at that.
I think I will skip all that, thank you.
jtmartin31Dec 8, 2010
Good show.
justjohn025Dec 8, 2010
It's a great show, but it needs a lot more zombies and action. The season finale, the only part where they show zombies is the end when they're escaping for like 1 minute.
raazurinDec 8, 2010
Interestingly enough, the original creator of the series wrote, from the very first page, that he is not trying to make a zombie thriller but rather a story about a group of people simply trying to survive. Really, the zombies here are a bonus. The conflict could have been vampires and the story would have been just as strong. Thank God it wasn't vampires.

I watch it, it's a zombie story, I like zombie stories, but I totally miss how people think it's as good as they do. Is this something where everyone that's totally loving it were fans of the comics?
It may be based on a comic series but it's still a TV series where reading the comics is not a pre-requisite, and in that respect it's entertaining but it's not at all among the best on television.

platopieDec 8, 2010
I don't understand the love for this show at all.
I was a zombie movie fan well before it become popular as I watched the original "Dawn of the Dead" when I was a youth, and have been waiting for the next good zombie piece of cinema to come out since. The remake of "Dawn of the Dead" was good and 28 Days Later was decent, so when I saw AMC was coming out with a zombie T.V. show by the director of "Shawshank Redemption" (one of my favorite movies like everyone) I thought there was no way it could not be great.
I was mistaken.
With AMC's recent success with "Breaking Bad" (one of the best shows ever) and to a lesser degree "Mad Men" (overrated), I figured "The Walking Dead" would be pretty good. I didn't think it would be "The Wire," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or "Dexter" good, but I figured with all the names involved it would be one of my favorite shows.
Boy was I disappointed. Watching this show there seems to be no direction whatsoever. It seems like the plot is ad libbed with each episode. What is with the golden pond scene for half of an episode for? It is unwatchable. The acting is barely palatable, but if the story was good enough to make up for it, it wouldn't be as noticeable. Pretty much we have a bunch of cliche characters we have seen in almost all movies at some point wandering aimlessly around, (plot filler) while the writers unsuccessfully attempt to make sense of what they are writing. I see little originality to the show, and through watching it I have successfully predicted the next scene or sentence far too often to make the show respectable or keep me interested.
Someone please explain to me how this show is good, without using unintelligible, artsy fartsy terms they learned in film class to try and make something better than it actually is by finding false meaning in every little scene.

Other than "Curb Your Enthusiasm" I agree
platopie:"Someone please explain to me how this show is good, without using unintelligible...."
unintelligible ?? not sure, I tend to ramble an awful lot :-)
I'll get to Walking shortly,
You brought up "Breaking Bad" - Bryan Cranston's role, man I was happily shocked. When I first heard he was leading I thought hummm interesting, going to be another goof-ball fumbling around idiot char. ( which he's good at as well ). This will sound odd to anyone that's not a fan of this show, ( or SOA, Dexter, Deadwood... ) I figured his past roles ( Malcolm, Seinfeld ) would bring about..(bleed into )..umm...mocking and poking fun at the illegal drug trade, similar to weeds. Surprisingly, he brought, " you want the bad guys to win ", mister smart, cautious, nice, cool headed moral family guy yet with a very ruthless, immoral side to the show....you end up wanting Walter & Jesse to succeed. I don't think anyone else could have pulled this character off as well..the entire cast and crew are amazing.
Walking, the appeal ? the show is very slow paced and a few characters were a little green, my attention drifted often. Overall, the difference with this modern-reboot of the zombie genre was the human side, how it wasn't just about boo look behind you, run, kill, run, boo, kill, oh no, I can't run faster than a one leg, no arm, half dead corpse looking to dine on brain noodle soup. It had such moments, but ultimately it dealt more with the human element, more adult in content, splash of genre pun. There were may scenes that were brilliantly written and played out: the two sisters and one becomes infected, the black guy on the roof with the racist jerk, the old persons safe house, kicking the wife beaters ass...many more. Take deadwood for example, very slow, old west genre. The writers made the story real, had ups and downs, hate and love, blood and guts, moral issues and by breaking away from the common family friendly safety net most westerns tend to have, the viewer was given a more realistic look at history..let me add Jane & Al were spot on great.
Walking was able to provide this as well. Far as "how this show is good.." ? Suppose it depends on the viewer and what is expected of a show. Personally I enjoy character driven shows, even if the plots are scatter-brained, Fringe and Dexter are good examples...I enjoy the deeper "crossing over into a multiverse to save your child, selfish act and the aftermath events " over the shows pretty little monsters and various plot holes. Dexter, is just lovable regardless of his disposition, here its the emotional twisted-moral aspect rather than the kill. This past episode was enjoyable due to Dexter and Lumen's awkward-abnormal relationship, the scenes with them planning a kill with baby toys, buying a knife together, " Is that what Lumen and I have? Pretty Serious s**t? " -- Dexter, S05E11 - thought bubble is what keeps me watching. They have that Sookie and Bill ( true blood ) relationship and moments: [cleaning up a body in her house] Sookie: "Normal couples do not do this, Bill Compton." Bill: "What would you rather be doing? Sittin' on the sofa, watching television?", Sookie: "Just once I'd like to not find a dead body in my house. Is that asking too much?".
So, I can't really provide any real tangible " why is it good " answer..only why I have enjoyed Walking or specifically good writing and execution of roles.
Best regards
platopieDec 8, 2010
P.S. Oh yeah Zombieland was pretty good too..
