I'm glad the author mentioned Dark Star, a classic that no one has seen. By the way, the beach ball scene is what created the foundation for Alien.
mishabearMar 28, 2011
I had forgotten all about that movie. I loved it as a teenager. I need to see it again. Soon.
rameshkarthikMar 27, 2011
Missed Star Wars and Star Trek. Anything related to technology in movies cannot miss these two movies

Too bad computers from TV aren't in this list. I was always fond of the General from the Prisoner.

HAL + 1 = IBM H+1 = I, A+1 = B L+1=M. Damn you for trying to kill us all in the matrix and with cyberdyne terminators IBM, DAMN YOU!

what about the computer from eagles eye? that movie was bad ass... imagine if that computer was your best friend and on your side :)
mrteflonMar 27, 2011
If TV was included in this one I would go with HAL.
Closed AccountMar 27, 2011
bwahahahaha if IQ were included all of your intensely stupid comments wouldn't be buried.
DaveLewis1Mar 27, 2011
Has to be Hal

Need to see Moon.

I always liked WOPR (in War Games) for its extreme ridiculousness. First off, the notion that you could just dial into a missile targeting computer! I was actually a software project manager in the Air Force at the time, and we all got a laugh out of that. The other ridiculous part was all the lights - somehow movie mainframe computers always had to have a ton of lights on them.
Of course, it's only right that Justin Thomas goes even further down the ridiculous path by claiming it ran DOS.
tympanicttuMar 27, 2011
I believe one of the Airplane! movies has a gag about movie computers having a ridiculous amount of lights which do nothing.
bdbrMar 27, 2011
Yep - that was William Shatner at the moon base. I loved that scene!
meccaydnaMar 28, 2011
I don't recall it being as simple as dialing into the computer. Didn't he find the original programmer's "back door" way to log in? I remember them talking about how every programmer makes a back door entrance.
Dumb plot device, yes, but it did the job advancing the story methinks.
docpettyMar 27, 2011
I cannot do that Dave...
jocarr123Mar 27, 2011
I'm sorry Dave.
spazattack5000Mar 27, 2011
Moon is a pretty awesome movie. Most of you probably haven't seen it but you certainly should.
luv2luvMar 27, 2011
I LOVED Moon...great movie that fell under the radar in the last couple years. Produced by David Bowie's son too (trivia)
evanmorrismtsMar 28, 2011
Damn good movie!

Missing from the list: VIKI - I, Robot and the VSI Mainframe - Lawnmower Man
cdnnow982Mar 27, 2011
"What are you doing Dave" - every once-in-a-while I my alarm clock is turning on me.
mrnaturalMar 27, 2011
Forbidden Planet was actually an adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest." The machine in and of itself wasn't the danger, it was Dr Morbius' ability to interface his own brain to the machine and control the vast power generated deep inside the planet. It was less about the computer and more about the peripherals.
As great as FP was, a well crafted remake might be in order.
