venturebeat.com — The late Steve Jobs was honored with a Grammy Trustees Award on Saturday for his contributions to the music industry, which included helping to develop the iPod and reshaping the way music is sold with the iTunes Store.

Oh the irony, given the industry tried desperately to kill the technology from the first introduction to the US (for fun trivia, try googling RIO PMP and RIAA).
Parasites.

This here shows you how meaningless a Grammy is.
seroevoFeb 13, 2012
The Grammys have been meaningless for years. Far less relevant than the Golden Globes or Oscars, not that either of those are worth anything near what they're still perceived to be worth.
adml_shakeFeb 14, 2012
The Grammy's don't reward whats good, they reward whatever is popular.
nosparknofireFeb 14, 2012
changing the culture surrounding the music industry to align with modern times is incredibly meaningful. jobs essentially saved the music industry.
FrankLuskaFeb 13, 2012
Such brilliance, a digital Walkman. No one but Job's would have ever though of that. Oh wait, he didn't, my bad.
macparrotFeb 13, 2012
That's because for once it wasn't that hardware alone that made a difference. It was only after combining good hardware with music management and purchasing software did legal digital downloads take off.
whacklyFeb 13, 2012
they didn't do any of that first either. apple just made it shiny and everyone went "ooh shiny" as if jobs had jingled keys in front of them.
macparrotFeb 13, 2012
Yeah a lot of companies felt that way and put out devices with more ports or were cheaper. I wonder whatever happened to all those devices? Here we are 10 years later and they still seem to think that more ports or specs is how to compete against Apple. How are all those other tablets doing anyway? The only one that seems to actually compete where it matters (which is in actual units sold not shipped) is the Kindle Fire. Find out what the iPad and Fire have in common and THAT is how you figure out how to compete.
But go on and keep thinking it was "shiny" that did it. Apple laughs and keeps banking major cash while the others sit and wonder what happened?
whacklyFeb 13, 2012
yeah, because i was being literal and not flippant in the least
rotfoxFeb 14, 2012
Meh, my custom computer can run circles around the highest level consumer mac and it cost a fraction to make.
I'm not going to say that Apple doesn't make a good product but I will say that their products are more expensive and have less features than the competitors. I can only assume its due to the marketing that they can continue as they have but all it will take is one big mistake on an iPhone or iPod to shatter the illusion of Apple equaling superior product.
Even a few of the guys I know who have iPhones have told me that it's a status thing. One even saying that they only bought one so they didn't look like a nerd for having an Android.
Say what you will, each company is running off of their own markets that they've wedged themselves into which is working for them thus far but Apple will come and go just like many other companies. I'll just buy what is best for me.
smpaisnutrientsFeb 14, 2012
I hear that more often then anything else, especially from apple users. They get the apple products simply for status.
mtownFeb 14, 2012
The only exception is the iPad, which is pretty much the best tablet you can get right now. As for their PC's, Laptops, and phones, you are absolutely right and can find higher-quality products elsewhere for a fraction of the cost.
ridgerunner5Feb 14, 2012
Ah yes, the iPad. Lets take a phone, make it huge, and remove the ability to make calls.
superkendallFeb 13, 2012
Apple is the first company that made it work for everyone - acting as the rough negotiator in the middle for a compromise that worked for both music companies and consumers. Until Apple came along, companies either had solutions that were great for consumers but the music companies hated (and eventually were able to destroy, like MP3.com) or you had ultra-sucky music studio online sales with DRM up the wazoo.
whacklyFeb 13, 2012
fair enough.
adml_shakeFeb 14, 2012
Steve's argument that got all the labels to sign on to Itunes was basically "you guys are losing your shirts to online piracy because you don't offer an alternative for people who want their music in other formats. I'm offering you this chance to sell through my store, where people won't look on napster anymore for music because you can buy what you need right from this interface." Thats what got itunes going.
djguerrillaFeb 14, 2012
Such brilliance, a digital Walkman. No one but Job's would have ever thought of that (and had it made exactly like that, that well, at that point in time). Oh wait, you didn't, my bad.*

Indeed - he didn't. But he DID oversee the making of a product that non techy people actually WANTED. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he was a nice guy - but hell he did know how to put a team together and have develop some excellent products - and on top of that he invented a way for the music industry to capitalize on digital downloads.
puzzudFeb 13, 2012
Uh, shouldn't Apple get the Grammy?
southsideirishFeb 13, 2012
No, Steve should get the Grammy, but with Jonny. Without him the iPod would suck, but without Steve it would suck just as bad. It needed both of them.
amazetbmFeb 13, 2012
Interesting when you consider getting the major labels to agree to iTunes pricing scheme was a long fought uphill battle.
kylenienhausFeb 13, 2012
What did the child-slaves who make iPods get?
macparrotFeb 13, 2012
I don't know. What did the child-slaves that made other MP3 players get? Or were they all made by unicorns and happy elves?
kylenienhausFeb 13, 2012
It was what scientists call a "joke". Fortunately for all I just read this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2012/02/13/apple-foxconn-fair-labor-association_n_1273915.htmlComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
adml_shakeFeb 14, 2012
Well if you talk to some Apple users, thats exactly what their devices are made out of, and by.
superkendallFeb 13, 2012
Apple doesn't employ any slaves. You are thinking of the manservant you have chained in your basement.
kylenienhausFeb 13, 2012
Lol, read that with Baron Underbite's voice in my head.
kylenienhausFeb 13, 2012
Lol, read that with Baron Underbite's voice in my head.
Mark_LincolnFeb 14, 2012
And the RIAA is busy trying to snuff out the non-profit trade in MP3s.
rudegarFeb 13, 2012
there were mp3 players before ipods
but people seemed to like the user interface and design of the ipods
with itunes they bought an audio player software made it bloated in the pc version
put a browser in it and let it be the only program which could display those www pages
and buy music from them it had DRM
people liked it they removed DRM and people liked it more
they still have DRM on movies
superkendallFeb 13, 2012
A crude yet accurate history of the situation.
southsideirishFeb 13, 2012
Yeah, I remember the days before I bought my first iPod in April of 2002.
Now let me forget them. They sucked!
knm3Feb 13, 2012
Has any record label CEO gotten a grammy? Has any other creator of a music distribution device won a grammy? I don't think Emile Berliner, Fritz Pfleumer or Norio Ohga won a grammy. Then he doesn't deserve one either.
southsideirishFeb 13, 2012
Dude, he won a Grammy that goes to inventor's among others, so yes other's like Edison have won it. I think the iPod is certainly as important as the phonograph. Sure Apple did not invent mp3, or the mp3 player, but Jobs forced the music industry into the 20th century, and changed the music industry for the better.
And you couldn't Google this!
handofdevilFeb 14, 2012
I don't get it. You don't hand out nobel prizes to presidents of the countries that the winners reside in or even the head of the organization they work for. Then why is Steve Jobs given an award for a product developed by Apple? If anything, the company as a whole deserves the award.
knm3Feb 14, 2012
He did improved the music industry but it would have happened without him. But Grammys should go to the artists, not those who profit from them.
southsideirishFeb 14, 2012
You are joking right. Hahahahahahaahaha
Do you seriously remember what we had before? I remember my first RioVolt. Blech! My Apple iPad hacked for Windows was a much better experience. And what came after. More blech!
Blech, blech, blech. They all sucked!
jenevahumangitFeb 13, 2012
Reasonable enough, there are still some who appreciate such creations.
KajunTexApr 12, 2012
Hello....I spend a lot of time in Cebu City...Welcome to Digg
srastewartFeb 13, 2012
You can get a Grammy for releasing overpriced and overrated goods? Hmph.
djguerrillaFeb 14, 2012
I know right? You should get started releasing or building something so you don't look like an ass for saying a CEO didn't do s**t. Oh wait....
srastewartFeb 14, 2012
You get on it as well. Oh wait... Their products are fad items, nothing more.
djguerrillaFeb 14, 2012
I didn't belittle a CEO so I don't have to buddy. Keep believing they're fad items. When they're still outselling the entire industry in 3-4 years, I won't look for an apology, its no big deal
zainnasir1989Feb 13, 2012
he deserves it .... hats off to steve jobs .... :))
rabbitsinblackFeb 13, 2012
Why are people worshiping the Devil and giving it Awards still?
djguerrillaFeb 14, 2012
Moron
rabbitsinblackFeb 14, 2012
Who me? Guess you like evil bosses that look nice in public but assh**es behind doors. PR BS
djguerrillaFeb 14, 2012
Calling the deceased leader of a consumer electronics company the devil doesn't seem a tad ridiculous? Keep spouting conspiracy theory bulls**t dude, see if anyone else buys it. Yawn
rabbitsinblackFeb 14, 2012
It's funny how you people can be fooled by my own BS and the public thinks I'm the nice guy but behind doors I can be a picky assh**e. This also goes for many people that are in the real business world. As I always been told ignorance is bliss and you must be a good actor in the public eye. What you don't know will kill you not me. HA!
djguerrillaFeb 15, 2012
*blah blah incoherent psycho-babble rah rah rah*
oedabFeb 13, 2012
I am so glad he was given that award. He certainly deserved it. He was a genius!
fabbriziodFeb 13, 2012
well deserved!
muzzeFeb 13, 2012
When the last word is written on how tech changed the world, Steve Jobs will be called the Father of Tech, his rightful title.
ridgerunner5Feb 13, 2012
Bullcrap. He stood on the shoulders of giants. Other groups developed the hardware and software, Apple just bought them out and combined them.
superkendallFeb 13, 2012
If it were that easy Apple would have a lot of successful competition.
ridgerunner5Feb 13, 2012
Nope, because they patent things like using your fingers or having the device be square.
