Well shoot, even in the original Planet of the Apes, when Charlton Heston discovers that he was on Earth, does he blame the apes? No, first thing he does is blame the humans. So even then, there's the implication that the apes may be assh**es, but humans brought this upon themselves. It's not exactly anything new.

There's a lot of money in "white guilt". Americans think they're too clever for "repent ye sinners" nowadays, so they dress it up in a very slightly different hat and coat, not that there's anything wrong with that.
English people like the recast Arthurian legends of Harry Potter; Japanese in the '70s dug on the nuclear+American+WW2.1 allegory that was Space Cruiser Yamato. To the end of time, there will be like 10 stories that humanity tells over and over, NTTAWWT.

I can't imagine how they made the end result plausible. For the original, I always had figured a natural disaster took out mankind or something, but a pile of research apes take over the planet? O.o
