If you slow something down 100%, it stops moving. How do you slow it down 800%?
That's like having an 800% off sale at Macys.
mitcheypooAug 17, 2010
When you slow down audio or video, you really just extend the underlying time. So slowing down 1 second of audio by 800% would make it 8 seconds long.
xwhyAug 17, 2010
Okay. Thanks for the info.

rolfAug 18, 2010
Wait, that still doesn't make sense to me because you can say a moving object is all about time. Let's say you roll a ball 1 m/s so it goes a distance 10 meters in 10 seconds.
You slow down the ball by 50% to 0.5 m/s so it goes 10 meters in 20 seconds.
You slow down the ball again by half (25% of original speed) so it goes 10 meters in 40 seconds.
Finally, you slow the ball yet again by half (12.5% of the original speed) so it goes 10 meters in 80 seconds.
And there we have it. 8x the time. The music was slowed to 12.5% (or 1/8) of it's original speed. I get what the 800% is trying to say, but I'm not sure if it makes sense.
lukeatronAug 18, 2010
@rolf: Two ways of saying the same thing. You are looking at it in terms of the distance covered while saying it the other way is in terms of time taken.
rolfAug 18, 2010
Yeah, I kind of got that... but what I was getting at "slowed down TO 12.5% of it's original speed" is equivalent of saying the song was "slowed down BY 87.5%"
Once you slow something down by 100%, it's stopped and over 100% implies the moving object (or music in this case) is actually going backwards.
bbkingadrockAug 18, 2010
9 seconds, actually.
(Slow it down by 100%=2 seconds, 200%=3 seconds, 300%=4 seconds, etc.)
derspiegelAug 18, 2010
You made a common mistake people make when dealing with multiple hundreds of percent. I'll show you how. Slowing down 1 second of audi by 100% would make it twice as long, or 2 seconds. I think you can easily see that. so then carry on the logic at each incremental 100% level. That means .....
0% = 1 second (ie. The same length. It doesn't change).
100% = 2 seconds
200% = 3 seconds
300% = 4 seconds
400% = 5 seconds
500% = 6 seconds
600% = 7 seconds
700% = 8 seconds
and therefore.....
800% = 9 seconds. NOT 8 seconds.
People make the same mistake when considering increases of levels of 100%. If you have an investment that goes up 100%, you have twice as much money. Up 200% = 3 times as much. And continuing on, 800% = 9 times as much. etc., etc.
Closed AccountAug 18, 2010
We can further explain it by imagining the original length as 100%.
So, when you increase the length (slowing down the music), you add length.
May 1 second be 100%. If you add 800%, you'll have 900%, i.e. 9 seconds.
Think of adding instead of just multiplying.
jeffshaughtAug 18, 2010
@rolf:
math: ur doin it rong.
johndiAug 19, 2010
Rolf, if audiophiles understood math and physics Monster Cables wouldn't exist. They had to create a system that they could work with and that means no decimals. It's sort of like how the RIAA thinks each song is worth $150,000 and will spend over $16 million in lawyer's fees to recover $391,000.
http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/2010/07/ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-riaa-paid-its-lawyers.html
Closed AccountAug 19, 2010
johndi, if all audiophiles were the same- maybe none of them would understand math, but they're not and I love music and math. I feel like they're intrinsically linked, and I bet a lot of music people are the same way.
beesknees21Aug 19, 2010
Derspiegel is correct. It might be easier for some to just think about how much the percentage ADDS to the original value. In that case then if we are given 1 second and slow it down by X% then we need to add:
0% = 0 second (ie. we do not add anything to the original value of 1 second. 0s +1s = 1s).
100% = 1 seconds (1s +1s = 2s).
200% = 2 seconds (2s +1s = 3s).
300% = 3 seconds (3s +1s = 4s).
400% = 4 seconds (etc.)
500% = 5 seconds (etc.)
600% = 6 seconds (etc.)
700% = 7 seconds (etc.)
It makes intuitive sense too because if someone invests $1 in a stock that goes up 200% then you know they made $2 plus their original investment of $1. They now have a total of $3.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

From what I can tell based on the comments on that sound cloud file, this was made using a free piece of time-stretching software called "Paulstretch", a freeware app used to time stretch audio files to super long lengths. Check it out:

adamandeveitAug 18, 2010
Well 'per cent' means per 100, so 800% = 800 per 100, = 8 per 1, = 8 seconds for every 1 second
docholiday22Aug 18, 2010
You use 1.21 gigawatts of power to go back in time...
brassbudAug 18, 2010
Sound is measured by frequency, which is a rate. A Western "A" is going ~440 cycles/second. If you decrease this rate by 100 percent, you will have 0 cycles/second (which is, coincidentally, my favorite speed for Justin Bieber's music)
berkanaAug 19, 2010
"If you decrease this rate by 100 percent, you will have 0 cycles/second "
No, you just described decreasing the *frequency* by 100%, not the *rate* at which the music is being played. If you decrease the rate by 100%, you double the time it takes to play the song.
gtsrboyFeb 16, 2011
You're correct, 100% slowed down means its stopped. 1/2 slowed down is 50% play rate. 1/2 is 50%. 1/2 isn't 100%. All the people who commented you are wrong. Slowing down a song "8x" means its being played at a 12.5% rate. In the program audacity, you cant type in "slow by 800%" you'll get an error. A, stupidity error, common for Digg users.

I would think this was discovered by a change of frequency...probably through a CD rip, which was at 192,000hz...then this lesbian lover turned the rip into an mp3 at 44,100hz and was probably told the convert could make some undesirable effects, but the lesbian lover doesnt read so she just saw the yes button. I'm pretty sure clicking that link constitutes piracy, because you can speed the track back up to 100% and have a free Bieber song (of course you WOULDN'T do this.. who would want an actual Bieber song?)
ALL I'M SAYING IS: expect choppers, SWAT, and a 55 million dollar judgment.
dj_sea2005Aug 18, 2010
speeding it back up to normal speed would be quite difficult if not impossible,
It's time stretched rather than pitched shifted, meaning that you'd need to use the same software used to slow it down in order to speed it back up, so that the time stretching algorithms match, otherwise you'd end up with weird glitches and artefacts.
Not to mention it sounds like this has a s**t tonne of reverb added to it, both regular and reverse, Probably to cover up the the time stretching artefacts you would introduce from slowing it down so much. If reverb has been added, it would be impossible to get it back to the way it originally sounded.
ccff00Aug 18, 2010
dugg for s**t tonne.
nicktrippAug 18, 2010
I popped it into Audacity and used the "Change Tempo" function to shorten the length of the song by a factor of 8. Yeah, it's glitchy and there's reverb, but it's definitely that song. It's not unlistenable...well, except for the whole Justin Bieber part.
cfuseAug 18, 2010
Why would you download a 32.4Mb (*cough*) mp3 if you wanted the original Bieber song? You could just download the original (or copy it from one of your tween BFFs).

Gaga just kicks ass. I'm not a pop music fan, but she is talented, and even made a song in tribute to German Industrial Metal.
YEA!!!

There, fixed.
douglasqAug 18, 2010
Buried for making me listen to the original to compare. Never heard a Justin Bieber song before, I knew it'd be bad but I didn't think it'd be like that. I feel so f**king violated.
Thanks a f**king lot.
asoap69Aug 18, 2010
I had to do the same thing. I almost threw up. I gotta go listen to some Boards of Canada now to clense my ears.
asoap69Aug 18, 2010
Here, use this to clean your auditory pallete.
Start with some boards of canada - dayvan cowboy.

Then finish off with some Sonny J - Handsfree

thealliedhackerAug 18, 2010
They should have done a time stretch without a pitch shift so it doesn't sound like The Chipmunks.
pixeldjAug 19, 2010
Whoa it sounds like Justin Bieber.
cusomanAug 19, 2010
Sounds like GlaDOS actually.
bestenemyAug 19, 2010
I much prefer the original by Jon Marsh.
treynorm89Aug 19, 2010
If pop songs had string parts this developed I might actually start listening to the radio!

I heard this on the radio this morning..
rainemakerAug 18, 2010
I liked it enough to listen to listen to the entire track. Then again I'm at work so others complained, but...
I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told Bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

I also would really like to keep my stapler and they keep moving my desk, I used to have a window and I looked at the squirrels outside. They were married.

love it!!
hugopolskyAug 19, 2010
Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta.
caughtthinkingAug 18, 2010
3 minutes in and its still great - movie soundtrack worthy. Kind of like the battle scene when 2 or 3 important characters have been killed, and the hero is still shooting his gun in slow motion trying to save a few guys.
jackspadeAug 18, 2010
I was thinking more like when Ace Ventura was channeling the Tibetan monks and he's traveling though the clouds.
jrackowAug 18, 2010
I agree, Caught. It's very, very good.
raisinbrainmmmAug 18, 2010
You all don't know this yet, but someone is trying to wake you up from your 2nd level dream with a Justin Bieber song. You better watch out and keep your secrets safe from the agents around you.
xflankerxAug 19, 2010
One thing I thought of that would match that scene is something that hasn't been released as a movie yet -- the end of Deathly Hallows when there's a huge fight going on and some of the important characters have died.
stikytAug 19, 2010
It sounded to me like a really dramatic scene from an ancient Greek themed movie like Troy, Alexander or 300.
revncliffieAug 19, 2010
I flashed to the game Homeworld.
warriorpoetistAug 19, 2010
It feels like the opening to Blade Runner.

Justin Bieber: the poster child for the effects of BPA on the fetus.

what if we speed enya's songs up by 800%?
tacodog76Aug 18, 2010
It sounds like Aqua.
perdidoAug 19, 2010
There should be a site with just this. Sped-up and slowed-down versions of songs. I'm actually liking the 1/800 Bieber song. Kinda new age and trippy.

I'm glad Soundcloud is being used for such noble purposes.
