It does look good, and it brings the low-tech feeling of a drawing into the high-tech world of digital. Excellent.

I agree, they don't look sweet! But there's still nothing like flipping through a shiny mag (call me old fashioned). At any rate, will make the change over - the shiny mags take up way to much space!

Graphic Novels
jaydoAug 13, 2010
Comic Books =/= Graphic Novels, there is quite a difference.
oatmealAug 13, 2010
iPad/iPhone app is on the way folks.
fanclerksAug 13, 2010
Sweet, love me some digital Oatmeal goodness!
nard3456Aug 13, 2010
The oatmeal is already digital. It will just on the iPad.
fanclerksAug 13, 2010
@nard3456
OK, yeah, you got a point. Stupid statement. I guess I should have said digital touch Oatmeal goodness? I dunno... still be nice any way you put it.

i bet the flash is loving this :)
dethtron5000Aug 13, 2010
At Marvel we have a successful online Flash app that co-exists nicely with our iphone/ipad/ipod touch app.

Dugg because they interviewed my boss ;)

Unless you can get us all jobs at Marvel...STFU! :)

Will someone please create a reader/device that opens like a book with two screens?
Over & above the obvious benefit of two screens, the screens will be self-protected.
Also two screens will mean the continuation of the two-page action layout.

Also boosts the appeal of physical pads.

I'll be glad when a good Droid tablet is out as well as a decent app.
/buried for using Android instead of iOS

It's unfortunate that I don't see manga being distributed the same way.
stackoleeAug 13, 2010
I remember reading that manga was pretty popular with the Kindle set, though quite a bit of that is already black and white to begin with...

I'm loving the digital comics revolution. I thought I would hate it, but my digital comics subscription has let me catch up on the last few years of comics.
Even on my little Ipod touch it's not bad. I'm reading Scott Pilgrim on there now, and the frame by frame transition works great. But the problem with the apps are this: 1.99 an issue? When I could spend a dollar more and get a real comic? C'mon! How about a dollar? or how about a digital subscription service like Marvel does on the web? Would that be so hard?
fanclerksAug 13, 2010
I really wish that Marvel would create a digital subscription service for their iApp. I'd so be willing to pay $50+/yr for access to their entire archive. Plenty of storylines on there I'd love to catch up on but I feel a bit like I'm being ripped off when it's ~$2/issue.
stackoleeAug 13, 2010
Please, comic book industry, just sell cbrs or cbzs. Please don't go down this route with proprietary formats and iPad only content.
Look, name any comic you want from Marvel, DC, or Image. I'll bet you I can download a torrent of the entire series in cb(z|r) format for free. Don't play the same game the music industry failed at for a decade.
I'm not saying you can't have a branded app--but if you try to pull the same stunts as Marvel's regular web digital comics (flash app which makes it theoretically impossible to save the comic to your computer) I won't even give it a shot. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Reading comics on the iPad is great.
Btw if you are looking for a good .cbz or .cbr reader, check out CloudReader. I loves my Epic Illustrated :D
elcadAug 13, 2010
And I thought my 26" monitor was still a little to small to read most comics on. Can't believe people would want to read them on an iPad or iPhone.
johnfluxAug 13, 2010
It's all about dpi
scottamusAug 14, 2010
Reading comics on the ipad is actually quite nice. The ability to zoom and having the screen closer to your face makes reading them much easier than on a monitor.
elcadAug 14, 2010
May have to give it a try sometime, but I don't have an iPad type device yet. But I don't really like the idea of pan and scan for media, but I'm not that much of a purist that I wouldn't try and enjoy it.
What do you do for the double page layouts?
productfredAug 13, 2010
I think you have it backwards.

This is totally like Tom Hank's idea in Big for virtual comics. Steve Jobs was probably a huge fan of that movie.
chocheeAug 13, 2010
I totally miss reading family circus! I would read it on an ipad.
moderntenshiAug 13, 2010
I started collecting back in January 2009, and I don't think I'd go over to digital comics. Maybe if they were loads cheaper than physical copies, but there's something about actually holding and reading a comic that I just can't pass up. There's also the collectability factor, as well as sharing.
Really, the best way to read comics for cheap (legally that is), would be to wait for them to come out in collected volumes called trades, or by most people as graphic novels. They collect a good number of comics from a series (usually 6 to 7 in a single book), and if you wait for the paperback versions, most can be had for $15 or less. Considering most new comics run $3 to $4 per issue, a collection of 6 or 7 in a single book at $15 a book is cheaper. Maybe not by much, but it can add up over time.
xforce11Aug 13, 2010
I've email DC about it but they need to get smart and let people do a dual subscription. Pay $X and get both the hard copy and iPad version.
kcianfaglioneAug 26, 2010
iPhone too please!
redtiger676Aug 27, 2010
I'll stick with my regular comic books, but it's great that the iPad is expanding interest in digital comics.
