He's been in some terrible movies - but if you want to see a great comedy film with Nic Cage - watch The Wicker Man.
Easily the best comedy movie ever made - unintentionally.

I wouldn't put the movies as part of why he's bankrupt. There is no "destroy your career" in Holywood. You can make 3 stinkers, and if the next movie is a blockbuster, everything is forgotten.
Now, buy all those houses and castles and cars, yes, that will make you go bankrupt.
