Crud. I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. I'm almost certain that "time spent on site" has been higher for FB than Google for awhile.
Closed AccountDec 30, 2010
Why crud? Why the hell does it matter to you which site is the most visited?
bobosmitorDec 30, 2010
I am surprised about this.
tompoDec 30, 2010

HELPFEEDTHETROLLDec 31, 2010
There is one, you just have to search to find it.
bosskeyDec 31, 2010
I'm not surprised at all.
Google is a site you use and move out of as soon as you can, because your entire goal for using Google is to get to a different site, and Google is optimized to help you leave Google as soon as possible. When you don't need to find something, you don't go to Google.
Facebook is a site you use because you want to view all the content produced by your social connections (respond to invitations, look at photos, keep up on news, etc). Once you enter, you have few incentives to leave, and with every redesign Facebook buries more of the links out of the site. Facebook is designed to make you visit often and stick around, and that largely works on people.
A socially connected person will feel that they will miss something if they don't check Facebook every X days/hours/minutes. But nobody feel that they'll miss anything if they don't check Google today. That one difference in nature between the two sites is enough to guarantee a numerical tilt toward Facebook eventually.
kelynfDec 31, 2010
'But nobody feel that they'll miss anything if they don't check Google today.' I think that's why they change the picture on the 'Google' logo every week. It's so people will think, oh what picture do we have this week?
But it doesn't really work because no one cares about the picture =D
rpgmakrJan 1, 2011
I'm actually kind of hating it, as well as all of the other design changes that google have made (especially the change on gmail that buried the mark 'read', 'unread', etc links on a dropbox, I mean, WTF? That added ONE MORE CLICK for each action, it's really f**kin' annoying). I use greasemonkey solely to disable some new google 'features', like the fade-in of the homepage, the sidebar of the search results page. f**k google. Anyways, at first the doodles were fun, interesting and RARE. Now everyday there's a new doodle logo. Seriously google, what the f**kin' f**k?
kelynfJan 2, 2011
Yesterday it was some Roman crap, now it's the first time in a long time it's been normal! Should f**king rename the site to doodle.com...
fallenone05Dec 30, 2010
I thought pornhub.com was most viewed...
cryinlionDec 31, 2010
the average visit to facebook.com lasts much longer...
kelynfDec 31, 2010
Especially when someone posts content from pornhub.com on it :D
dirtyfriesDec 30, 2010
Google is still infinitely more useful.
breadfredDec 30, 2010
One is a search site, one is a contents site. Not really a fair comparison, would you say?
Closed AccountDec 30, 2010
Why not? People need tosearch a whole lot on hte intenret...which is why search pages have always been really high on the list.
breadfredDec 31, 2010
You do not go to a search engine to read content. You use it find it - once you have found the 'book' (set of web pages) you want to read, you go from one page to another without re-visiting the index (Google) again.
Man, I am full of metaphores today. I must have that looked at in the new year.
kelynfDec 31, 2010
You can search on Facebook for web results, too. But Google has other features like 'Documents' and 'Gmail' etc.
They're slightly comparable though.
teluuDec 30, 2010

I don't believe this one bit.

Why not? Because it isn't what you want...so you automatically assume the data to be faulty?
Actually, anyone with common sense knew this was bound to happen sooner, rather than later.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
hipmanDec 31, 2010
You can deny it all you want.It doesn't change anything.
politicalwindsDec 30, 2010
I rarely visit the google site, but I have the toolbar and I use it all the time. I suspect maybe that's what most people do now
Closed AccountDec 30, 2010
And search results count toward their page views. If it was just people going to www.google.com, they would not have been on top for years.
jdmcompliantDec 30, 2010
why is facebook the top search term? their webpage is not that hard to remember.
Closed AccountDec 30, 2010
Don't underestimate the number of lazy people who would rather just type facebook into their search bar, and then pick the top site rather than add the .com at the end and go directly.
Which of course would benefit Google's numbers even more.
bosskeyDec 31, 2010
There are SO many people who are too lazy and stupid to type in a URL and use Google for everything. Just read this blog post by a beleaguered site that turns up so high in a search for "Facebook login" that people post angry comments on the page that it isn't the Facebook login page!
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebook_wants_to_be_your_one_true_login.php
They added this message to the post:
"Dear visitors from Google. This site is not Facebook. This is a website called ReadWriteWeb that reports on news about Facebook and other Internet services. You can however click here and become a Fan of ReadWriteWeb on Facebook, to receive our updates and learn more about the Internet. To access Facebook right now, click here. For future reference, type "facebook.com" into your browser address bar or enter "facebook" into Google and click on the first result. We recommend that you then save Facebook as a bookmark in your browser."
Next time you ask yourself how America elected Bush twice, just read that page and understand...
kelynfDec 31, 2010
Some stupid people actually type in the address bar 'www.google.com' then type into the search box 'facebook.com'.
Those stupid people are most of my friends... ='(

hotleperDec 31, 2010
I don't think Google cares about being dethroned. They just want a big piece of the pie in every field. What will be interesting to see is if Facebook is content to be just the most visited site or will they look to expand into other areas. Will there be a facebook phone? or maybe a facebook tv?
Closed AccountDec 31, 2010
Then how come Google has only a TINY piece of the pie in almost every field other than Search and Advertising? Other than that, only in web based mail (where they are a very distant third place) do they have a double digit piece of the pie.

I was able to get up to about 1400 accounts before I got bored completely.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Be interesting to know the % of time spent that is actually useful in any way as opposed to simply visits through addiction. I hardly ever find FB actually useful, google is always useful.
representdlvDec 31, 2010
Facebook isn't really about being "useful". It's a social networking site. And it's the best one.
BBriggsyDec 31, 2010
Do you want to know long it took me to tie my trainers just now?
If the cowlick on the left side of my head has misbehaved this morning?
How many paces it is from my front door to my Vespa?
If my coffee (sorry, meant to say 'trippple cafffe lattte deluxxxe, sans foam') was to my liking?
Of course you do.
I had to close my account ...couldn't take the excitement.

I can't believe people so willingly give up their personal information and the information of all their friends, associates and family. And for FREE!
To each his own.
