Yeah as a white guy, I CAN say I don't do this.
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
Me either. And I was brought up 3 blocks north of Harlem. I went to PS 28 at 155 St and Edgecombe Ave.
cawpinFeb 2, 2012
Agreed.
assassyn360Feb 5, 2012
What exactly as a white guy makes you so special that you do not speak in jargon? Everyone on this planet does it. You wouldn't talk to your best friend in the street the same way you would you mother. That is jargon.
doodlemasterFeb 2, 2012
As a gay black guy I've done this so many times....
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
Why?
tsuruchibrianFeb 2, 2012
Ar you asking why people take aggressive postures when they feel threatened?
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
Did you consider the poses the comedians took aggressive? I didn't. Certainly not threatening.
tsuruchibrianFeb 2, 2012
Well if you had watched the video, the second man told the person he was talking to that he was almost mugged. So at least for this video, the intent was to to portray aggression.
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
I watched the whole thing.
I didn't see it as portraying aggression.
Rather, I thought he was trying to be a chameleon and show they were members of the same group.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tsuruchibrianFeb 2, 2012
All I can tell you is that I think you are not inferring the same thing the video was implying.
It is pretty clear to me that both men where taking an aggressive posture as a defense mechanism.
This kind of posture is not always aggressive, but I think in this case it definitely was, as evidenced by the second man expressing fear that he was almost mugged.
I don't know how else to explain it to you.
sbuckley00Feb 4, 2012
Gay man.. that is the point here. Cause white straight guys do not act like this. Cause we are not scared of s**t!
sbuckley00Feb 4, 2012
He is asking why he is such a bitch pussy that he would act this way????

How is an ad for a show on Comedy Central somehow on the 'Hot Stories'?
norman619Feb 3, 2012
I can't help but compare skit comedy shows to Dave Chappellle's show. This one isn't nearly as funny. BRING BACK DAVE!!!!
hitwondersApr 19, 2012
What happened to Dave?

The white guys and black guys should always be coherent with each other.

I can remember watching TV about 25 years back when once a week, some old white guy would pop up on TV after the news in the commercial break before Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy to give some commentary or opinion, then wait a few days for letters to come in to respond to the local feedback. I kinda miss that.

The taller guy, Key, used to be on Mad TV. He was brilliant on that. This show looks kind of dumb.
thechauvinistFeb 2, 2012
I watched the premier of this show the other night and I was surprised to say I enjoyed it...
ikorkyiFeb 3, 2012
i by mistake left comedy central on after tosh.0 and can't say i was surprised it sucked.
kasha34Feb 3, 2012
These two guys were great when they were on MAD TV.
davielli22Feb 2, 2012
Yup. And then complain about "no one be hirin' my ass! It's racism - dat's what it is!"
Society has norms... like the ability to speak proper English in professional environments, for example. It's not always about racism. That's a convenient excuse.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
salbatrossFeb 2, 2012
"in professional environments" is the key phrase here...you might notice that standing on a corner next to another dude on the phone is not a professional environment.
Dickishness is also a reason people fail to get jobs.
davielli22Feb 3, 2012
Ok. Then by your measure, everyone should shut the hell up about when they don't get hired, it's solely because of racism. It's a tired excuse.

kasha34Feb 2, 2012
As a white guy you do what?
The real point here is that black people do this to be more "authentic." More "street."
Keeping it "real." Real dumb, as Chris Rock says.
PS - Obama does this. Changes his speech when he's talking to a more black audience.
What a f**king pander bear he is.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

White dudes do this ALL the time. It's hilarious and sad. They change their speech to "urban" when around their black friends that talk that way.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
Yes. And it's funny when they do.
But that's not what the clip is about.
cyberprunesFeb 2, 2012
No, but the headline is about that. White guys to the same thing for the same stupid reason..acceptance
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
The headline was by a lamo digger.
norman619Feb 3, 2012
Do they? Just like how blacks like kool aid and fried chicken? It's hilarious how it's OK to make racist generalizations about whites but not of any other ethnic group.
cyberprunesFeb 3, 2012
Yes!! Exactly like how blacks like kool aid and fried chicken.

sleestakslayerFeb 3, 2012
We used to call them "wannabes."
kasha34Feb 3, 2012
I thought black people in America were weighed down by bias and prejudice and institutional racism.
Then why would they have any "wannabes"?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
cyberprunesFeb 3, 2012
Perhaps because blacks are about an order of magnitude cooler when it comes to popular culture than any other group.
kasha34Feb 3, 2012
If you say so.
Or perhaps misplaced white guilt is one of the strongest forces known to mankind.
cyberprunesFeb 3, 2012
lol. Let's agree that this conversation has gotten stupid.
asfinktersezwutFeb 2, 2012
You really don't get out much do you? Italians, Germans, Irish and Russians all do this too - but I suppose that, being Europeans, they are not really white enough for you.
Brits have a wide range of accents and if you spend any time in England you will see that transformation from "office" to "home" as any of those who work in London shift from their daytime communication set to the speech patterns on a night out with the boys or just sitting at home watchin the tele with the wife and kids.
This is what people do the world over. It's really no different than speaking several distinct languages. People communicate with different communities in different ways. Each group shares a set of common bonds - experiences, ideas, words and phrases which inform a shared experience and produce a "culture". Those who straddle different groups become adept at shifting their own speech patterns - speaking the language of whichever group they are in. You really don't even notice that you are "doing it" because it is not a conscious action, it simply happens.
But hey, you can stick with your tiny little racist view that "black people" in America are somehow different from people in all of the rest of the big wide world and only " black people do this to be more "authentic."
You are either an incredibly misinformed person who has no experience of the world outside his tiny little frightened corner of America or you are a giant racist with a huge problem with black people... which one is it?
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
>sigh< You really missed the point the comedians were making.
Do you ever feel lonely because you're the one who doesn't get the joke?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
asfinktersezwutFeb 2, 2012
>sigh< right back at you...
I get the joke the comedians were making just fine.
I also get the fact that you extend it beyond the joke in a way that reeks of racism - even while trying to fool yourselves that it doesn't. Read my post again and try harder to understand what I wrote.
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
I did it. Gave up 30 seconds of my life for you and re-read your post.
I don't know of any group that puts on a phony uneducated accent to gain street creds and prove phony authenticity. Except the group that these comedians were making fun of.
Normally it's the other way around. Normal people try to impress each other by seeming MORE educated and MORE high class.
See? That's the joke, son.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tsuruchibrianFeb 2, 2012
This has nothing to do with race. Every group has it's own way to act tougher.
Asians, blacks, hispanics, slavs, democrats, republicans, women, gays, etc, and man other groups and sub groups within the groups I mentioned.
I am not sure what the point of the Obama attack is...
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
"Every group has it's own way to act tougher."
If you say so.
Why attack Obama? Cause his putting on his artificially acquired black accent is embarrassing and condescendingly patronizing?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tsuruchibrianFeb 2, 2012
"If you say so."
I do.
"Why attack Obama? Cause his putting on his artificially acquired black accent is embarrassing and condescendingly patronizing?"
1. I don't see how this was at all relevant to the video.
2. Having different ways of talking to different audiences is not necessarily artificial. I speak differently to my friends, family, children, and my boss, etc. You can believe this is artificial if you want, but it's a pretty common thing to do, and in my opinion, not worthy to attack someone for. It's not like everyone can't see how he talks at every public appearance.
3. I don't know why you think this is a "black" accent considering that it is no longer exclusive to black people. It is no more a black accent, than jazz is black music.
kasha34Feb 2, 2012
1. It wasn't relevant. I don't have to be relevant.
2. You speak differently? Do you change pronunciation? Do you add deliberate grammatical errors? Why?
3. "I don't know why you think this is a "black" accent"
Uh, the point of the video is that THEY considered it a "black accent."Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tsuruchibrianFeb 2, 2012
1. no you don't.
2. Yes I speak differently. Yes I change pronunciation. Yes I make deliberate grammatical errors. Because the purpose of language is to convey meaning. The best way to convey meaning is sometimes to use correct grammar and sometimes it to use incorrect grammar.
Using obscure but concise words or grammar may be the best way to communicate with other people who can appreciate it, but it is not the best way to communicate with family members who were born in other countries, less educated friends, or very small children just learning to speak.
3. I think the fact that you see this in the lens of black vs. non-black is because of your own biases.
I see it as clearly a "thug" vs, "non-thug", which has long since become it's own culture that transcends race. There are many non-black people who have adopted this culture. I can't make you see that. I can only try to make you aware of it if you were not previously.
And no I don't think the *point* of the video was that these people consider how they were acting "black". I interpreted the video as mocking the idea of feeling the need to act tough. There was nothing necessarily black about this idea. The exact same scene could have been acted out by people of any race.
I have a Filipino coworker who speaks exactly by the people in the video.
This culture may have started in the black community, but that was decades ago, and it is now orthogonal to race, just like how jazz music started as "black music" but has since outgrown this classification.
norman619Feb 3, 2012
kasha:
To be fair everyone does this. If you have different circles of friends then I'm willing to bet you do it as well. You just don't notice it. I do all the time. It's automatic. It's like that old saying, "When in Rome do as the Romans do."
I work at a school so when at work and speaking to my colleagues I speak proper English. When I talk to the students I talk a bit more like myself and use plenty of slang. I do this in English and Spanish. When I am kicking back with the maintenance crew I go into Spanglish mode even though I HATE when people speak like that.
kasha34Feb 3, 2012
Everyone does it?
Aside from filtering out curse words, I speak to everyone the same. And I used to speak for a living to people of almost all ages and a wide spectrum of race and income.
Still seems patronizing to me.
"Oh, let me get down on YOUR level and purposely wreck my English. Yes, I'm illiterate just like you, yo."
If the maintenance crew speaks Spanish, why not just speak Spanish if you can?
"I go into Spanglish mode even though I HATE when people speak like that."
You mean you hate it when people patronize Spanish-speakers? Or you hate the mixture of English and Spanish?

tsuruchibrianFeb 3, 2012
There's no "prolly" about it.
Also "you're" means "you are" and "your" implies possession (e.g. your dawg). I am not trying to be a grammar nazi (I make this typo occasionally), I am giving you some knowledge so you can seem smarter if you want to.
If you don't care about grammar, I'd suggest saying "ur", because at least it doesn't seem unintentional.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
