It's easy to hate on artists who switch up their style, but this song is a pretty effective demonstration of what happens when an artist doesn't evolve over time.
I can't help but think Dre wouldn't have fallen into creating a dated album (primarily the lyrics, the production here seems pretty modern, although I guess he could rapped over the chronic and I'd still be saying that) if he had released more albums over the years and given himself more room to adapt.
daimposterDec 14, 2010
i'm a huge Dre fan...but this song is very mediocre. I think being out of the game for 10 years has caused him to loose his edge and relate to todays music. You make a good point that if he had one two albums since Chronic 2001 (released in 1999!) it would have kept him fresh.
The beat is dated and even if this was released in 1999, it wouldn't be as good as Forgot About Dre or Next Episode.
To be fair, he was heavily involved in the 50 Cent's music when he as big back in 2004-2006. so he did have some great success with beats/music since 2001 Chronic
rib08Dec 14, 2010
I completely disagree. This song is going to grow on you and the video shows some real innovation.
daimposterDec 14, 2010
i don't really watch videos...i just care about the music. But i hope you are right....i hope it will grow on me. Problem is that music usually 'grows on you' when it's a new style and this is too much like 2001 Chronic that it won't get much better for me.
Closed AccountDec 14, 2010
He actually produced a lot 2001-08 .. Check out his wikapedia for just a few of the artists he worked on. But lyrically I guess he didn't do much.
daimposterDec 14, 2010
Dre's work as a producer included many hits with eminem early in the decade and with 50cent middle of the decade. But since about 2006, songs he produced haven't been major hits. Yeah, he's been involved but with little success relative to his past music.
theiinliveDec 14, 2010
Well everybody's a critic. I listened to his other two albums, and I happen to think it's quite a departure (already) from that stuff. Especially from The Chronic. The song is mediocre tho. still have high hopes for the album.
Closed AccountDec 15, 2010
I haven't listened to this yet (I'm at work), but I totally believe that it's dated. I've been completely hooked on another song from this coming album that got leaked - I Need a Doctor, featuring Eminem. Eminem's verses are absolutely out of this world awesome.......... and Dre's verse is very............ dated. So yeah, I think Dre needs a swift kick in the A, but I still can't wait to listen to the rest of the album.

Instantly turned it off after hearing the autotune.
agmlauncherDec 14, 2010
autotune has ruined music for me. I used to have a fairly wide range in taste, and now it's pretty much just rock / alternative because of it.
I also hate this trend for artists to tag themselves in their own songs like we give a s**t who they are. Jason Derulo and that JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ.R. / MMMMMMMM-monster kill voice in those songs is so f**king retarded it makes me turn my radio off by punching it...
How absurdly full of yourself do you have to be to tag yourself in your own song? Do these same artists announce themselves before they enter a room too? Or maybe if pop artists didn't all use auto-tune and sound exactly the same as one another, they wouldn't have to identify themselves in the first place lol......
This is why I hate artists and only listen to bands now. Artists are putting themselves before their music and they all sound exactly the same. f**k that.
Closed AccountDec 14, 2010
Right on brother. Autotune is a great tool for movies and special effects but it's also a cheat tool for s**tty artists ...
I have sattelite radio and pretty much just listen to alt nation . .. I dig electronic music to dance to.. but hip hop (besides old stuff) has pretty much ended for me.
itsjussedDec 14, 2010
i agree with you but you picked a terrible example. and even in most cases, the names you hear over and over are not the artists' themselves, it's the producer of the song. in your example, jr totem.
agmlauncherDec 14, 2010
I figured that JR was the producer in that case and Beluga Heights I assume is his record company.
But I hear artists tagging themselves all the time. Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Jay Sean, Ludacris, Usher, Jason Derulo etc...
Also getting sick of these artists always featuring someone just for the sake of featuring them, and when that featured artist sings its usually some terrible rap over that breaks the flow of the actual song.
It's like watching a movie and stopping half way through for an intermission of something totally unrelated...
ultramagnus0001Dec 14, 2010
Rap has always been about egos and autotune does suck, they even made Katie Couric sound like she can sing with autotune. Pop artists are manufactured, no talent needed. Rock also uses autotune.
janoo1989Dec 14, 2010
I think it's excusable in this case. I mean, when I first heard the song I immediately said "hey, it's the guy from California Love" as opposed to "goddamn autotune." Dre's been using that as a tool before it was adopted and popularized by goddamn t-pain. Plus, I don't even think it's used much past the intro.
sweetchinmusicDec 14, 2010
California Love was not autotune, they used a talkbox.

Wow, great fact checking skills you have there. It isn't like his THREE full length albums aren't all readily available commercial successes either.
