FTA:
"The Last Airbender is the first of a planned trilogy of films, and it roughly corresponds to the first season of the television show which was subtitled (like the movie) "Book One: Water." M. Night Shyamalan has written, produced, and directed the film, and will be doing the sequels as well, provided that they move forward."
Shyamalame will do another two? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
megalothJul 5, 2010
Your attempt to type the director's name is epic

"Mr. Shyamalan, we seem to have misplaced our copies of the contract for the additional two films so we think we'll just not make them.
Hope you understand."

3nder99Jul 7, 2010
I think Shymalan just hit his quota of bad movies. This one is going to cost the studio $50 million in production costs that will never be recouped. I hope.
808atheistJul 7, 2010
M. Night will make the next 2 films. They will kick ass. M. Night will say it was all part of his plan to make a "Reverse Matrix" trilogy. No one will be sure if he is telling the truth.
ghrayfahxJul 7, 2010
If we're doing a "Reverse Matrix", would Rick Astley be the opposite of Lawrence Fishburne? The possibilities of an Anti-Matrix would be astounding.
megalothJul 5, 2010
Too bad the movie sucks.

I love anime.
Don't see this movie.
liamjmJul 7, 2010
Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't Anime.
esc27Jul 7, 2010
Why? Not that I disagree, but why don't you consider it anime. It is certainly animated and has Asian influences, and Japan doesn't have a monopoly on anime. Is it just because this is a western cartoon, or is there something stylistic that it does different?
liamjmJul 8, 2010
I consider the term "anime" to mean Japanese animation and while Avatar's animation was obviously inspired by Japanese animation, that doesn't make it Japanese. Yes, other Asian countries have similar styles of animation, perhaps even before Japan, but Japan popularised it to its current level.
Avatar's writing and themes have anime influences but it benefits from western structure, pacing and characters (the way they are written not their ethnicity). Anime can be incredibly inventive and imaginative but it often uses popular or traditional Japanese writing tropes that would be consider "bad" writing in the west.

correction: Its not japanese anime.
boombyeJul 8, 2010
It's anime-influenced animation. It's not アニメーション since it's not from Japan.

I loved the series. I wont see the movie because I don't want the brand to be tarnished.

Um, from what I have heard, nobody is excited to see this movie.
oea420Jul 7, 2010
my girlfriend loves the series and is begging me to take her to the movie.... after seeing rottentomatoes and digg i am weary of taking her to a movie that will bastardize something she loves... then again she has kids and they want to see it very bad :P
diggeradoJul 7, 2010
I love the airbender series with a passion. It's not only the best American cartoon of all time, it's better than a lot of Japanese Anime (which is saying a LOT). But I've ignored people's advice to avoid movies before and suffered. The only way I'll see an Avatar movie is if they redo this again in a few years and do it right.
portezbieJul 7, 2010
I loved the show dearly and went and saw the movie with my gf and, as all the reviews have said, it was awful. Absolutely no narrative flow, it barely even feels like a story. Shamalama tries to make up for it with expositional dialogue and narration and just makes it worse. He also cuts out one of the greatest scenes in the entire show. Also for some strange reason he has the actors pronounce all the names wrong. All the changes he made felt as if they were made for no reason except to satisfy his own huge ego, not to enhance the story or ease the transition to live action and a feature length film. Finally, the movie is only like 95 minutes or something, he couldn't even have the decency to give over 10 hours of tv a full two hours.
This plus the happening really leave him as one of the worst directors of all time imo.
diggeradoJul 7, 2010
Maybe they'll reboot it like they did with so many other movies recently. Perhaps they can get it right next time... *sob*
portezbieJul 7, 2010
hopefully they just leave it alone now, although they probably won't since it still did pretty well in the box office. Also a reboot with something like spiderman isn't too bad bc each movie is a separate entity but with avatar it is one long story so it is def trickier.
I have to give M Night some credit, as much as I hate him he is pretty smart. After the happening the only way he really could have gotten me to see another of his movies is by doing what he did and appropriating a beloved franchise with an established fanbase.

Pro tip: watch the show. Avoid the movie. It's even on instant netflix.
diggeradoJul 7, 2010
Agreed! It's an amazing show on so many levels. 3 seasons only because they planned it that way.
carl27Jul 7, 2010
PLEASE let someone else do it, hell at this point. Micheal bay isn't looking too bad
smhoodyJul 7, 2010
This series was amazing. It teaches VERY important lessons in a non-pushy, non-threatening way. I'm always in awe of the roundness of each episode and how much a simple cartoon (and an american-made anime) could carry with it so much beauty and story.
This film scares me for all these reasons.
cartman86Jul 7, 2010
They got lost because the movie was horrible s**t.
alexselbyJul 7, 2010
Hopefully the next movie begins with Aang waking up from a bad dream, that dream being the entirety of the first movie, and then the real, properly cast, faithful to the cartoon, well acted and directed Airbender movie will begin.
If only.
morte42Jul 7, 2010
I'd excuse the terrible deus ex machina if it just removed everything this movie stood for.

Make a good Avatar movie? Wat a tweest!

the worst part of the movie being such utter s**t is that it COULD'VE been really awesome if done right.
diggeradoJul 7, 2010
I heard the movie sucks which is tragic. The cartoon (which would better be called American Anime) was one of the best (if not the best) in history. There are few shows with as much creativity, excellent humor, engaging story, and a solidly continuing story line... actually, I can't think of any except the Avatar.
loudmusicJul 7, 2010
I have several friends who are really into classic anime and started watching Avatar when it originally aired. At first I though, "Oh boy, now it's airing on Nickelodeon?!?", but caught a couple shows while my room mate was watching and I was really impressed. Now I'm probably a bigger fan than he is, though I still don't like much of the rest of the genre.
boombyeJul 8, 2010
What did you mean by "now it's airing on Nickelodeon?!?" Were you somehow thinking that it originally aired somewhere else and ended up on Nick? That's where it first originated, so I don't know why you were surprised thinking that it was "now airing" on that channel, as if it came out anywhere else before that. Watching Avatar is like an introduction into shonen anime 101 and it's most basic fundamentals.
boombyeJul 8, 2010
I call it what it is, an anime influenced cartoon... American Anime leaves a bad after taste, it's like instead of a hot Japanese female you instead get that fat chick from the annual convention by the airport.
jayneshJul 7, 2010
This is the biggest twist in hollywood history.
augihasanJul 7, 2010

cheeseschristJul 7, 2010
Worst movie EVAR.
wateryouthJul 7, 2010
So did anyone with kids see the movie and their kids actually like it?
branditaJul 7, 2010
The kids all seemed to love it at the showing I was at. Older people not near as much. Also those that haven't seen the show had a generally better response.
branditaJul 7, 2010
The movie isn't awful. It is bad. The script and editing are deplorable. The visuals, effects, and camera work is pretty top notch. The acting is bad except for Patel and Tomb. Here's to hoping the get a new director and writer for the next two films.
Closed AccountJul 7, 2010
What a shock, it's bad. Actually though, even before I knew the quality of the movie, I was already committed to not seeing it. After suffering through both "Signs" and "The Village," I refuse to hand over a single dime to Shamalamadingdong on principle alone.
larleiJul 7, 2010
In Shyamalan's defense the movie was his "interpretation" of the animated series.
At this point I'm not sorry to say, (after watching the movie)
Your damn interpretation should have never touched the screen.
pimpdawgJul 7, 2010
Looking forward to see to plays Shamino and Dupre. Connery would have made a great Lord British.
