Wait. I just realized that the movie industry just gave us twilight and The Last Failboner as our 4th of July weekend super weekend. Where is the crazy Will Smith movie or some other action blockbuster?

In West Philadelphia born and raised.......

Knight and Day is a good action movie. Tom Cruise is a badass the only problem is that sometimes Cameron Diaz talks.

The only problem is that you have to see it after having a frontal lobotomy to enjoy it.

Transformers 2 performed amazingly well at the box office. Airbender is going to be one of the biggest flops of the year.
rujtuJul 3, 2010
Why do you think it's going to be a big flop? I used to have big arguments with my friends (20-somethings) that loved Transformers 2, even though it was crap, just because they grew up watching the cartoon, and they enjoyed seeing their old favs in real life versions.
Here we have another terrible film that the critics hate, and here we have another film based on a cartoon show that is popular. Sure, many adults who loved the series won't pay to see the movie, but I bet tons of kids will. Kids have no other options this weekend other than Toy Story 3, which most kids have already seen (judging by parents I know), and Shrek Forever, which most kids have already seen.
betauserJul 3, 2010
Yeah, but pretty much everyone i've talked to with kids said that they hated it (the kids and the parents). While die hards might have enjoyed Transformers 2, die hards are NOT feeling this movie at all.
Then there's the review sites that are just tearing M Knight a new one. The outrage of some people after having spent money to see this in the theaters is rising to a dangerous level. I fear for this man's safety.
devsingh1359Jul 3, 2010
If there's one thing the two movies have in common, it's crapping all over our beloved franchises
langfordJul 3, 2010
No kidding. It's really not complicated to understand that when people want to see their favorite shows put into movies, they want to see their favorite shows put into movies, and not some new re-imagining of it. It's pretty exploitive and insulting to make something totally different, and then advertise it like the familiar material just to get backsides in the theater seats. It's like messing up cooking something that would have tasted good raw.
choobusJul 3, 2010
I saw The Last Airbender during a midnight premiere. I am a huge fan of the cartoon, and I had high hopes. Well, the Last Airbender was by far the worst film ive ever seen. It made Pluto Nash and The Happening look like oscar winning films. The Last Airbender is a terrible pile of cat feces
basalcellbosskJul 3, 2010
How dare you insult cat feces.
trolleyfanJul 3, 2010
So basically, it's "M. Night Shyamalan’s 'Pluto Nash'"?
choobusJul 3, 2010
It made pluto nash look good. The Last Airbender has literally nothing good about it. The fights suck, the actors suck, and the script sucks. Worst of all, all of the humor of the cartoon has been lost. This is the worst movie ever made

Agree. If they inserted Scrappy Doo and Jar-jar making smart ass comments the script would only have been improved.
Really, just the worst movie on every level. Even the CGI looked bored.

basalcellbosskJul 3, 2010
People may go to see Airbender because they have nothing better to do. Parents with kids who haven't read the reviews. Which will mean scads of money going toward Shyamalan and extending his reign of crapitude even further, even in the face of this latest s**tfest.
I wouldn't mind the guy making crappy movies if it wasn't for the fact that he personally thinks he is a genius and that everything he writes is pure gold, which by all accounts he does.
speedsteamboatJul 3, 2010
I'd hope that parents with kids and nothing better to do would take them to Toy Story 3, which also happens to be good.
kjsatzJul 3, 2010
I bet they've already seen it.
Not that I'd mind watching it again.
joest23Jul 3, 2010
I saw the film and it was a travesty. The story was disjointed, the action scenes were copied from 300 (Remember that scene in 300 where King Leonidas walks through the battlefield killing everyone and slow motion highlights every kill? That is used about 5 times in this film), the acting was horrific, the 3D was dark and blurry because it was converted after it was filmed, they mispronounced EVERY character's name from the show, the character's personalities drastically changed from the show...
It was horrible. M. Night. Shamalamadingdong shouldn't direct any more movies after this. Ever.
Closed AccountJul 3, 2010
At least T2's effects were pretty good. You are correct that the Air Blender looked crappy. We saw it in 2D and it was digitally choppy when they panned. It looked really low budget.
joest23Jul 3, 2010
Transformers and Transformers 2 effects were incredible. At least it had that going for it. This had nothing good about it.
speedsteamboatJul 3, 2010
Pretty good? Transformers 2's "effects" are an inscrutable, disorienting form of eye rape as far as I can tell. I'd compare it to placing your face directly against the side of a blender loaded with tin cans and silverware then turning it on to the highest setting. Nothing awesome about the headache it gave me either.
People say that T2 had "effects", but I'd argue there is, in fact, a difference between effects and "CGI clusterf**k."

betauserJul 3, 2010
Unbreakable was good right up until the time where the "twist" was that they were freakin' superheroes. Not that I hate superheroes, but the plot twist there was cheesy and contrived.
The village was the same way. It was a bit slow, but the whole atmosphere at least created some suspense that "something is lurking over there". Then when you find out that it's just some strange cult that has been living in a forest reserve the whole time, well, let's just say that i wanted to punch someone (preferrably Knight himself) in the face.

At least TF2 had some entertainment, maybe if The Last Airbender had fighting space robots it would do better
mkriss5681Jul 3, 2010
M. Night Shyamalan should just make an Unbreakable sequel
sugarazorJul 3, 2010
After Airbender, The Happening and Lady in the Water, I think he should just leave well enough alone.
jasondorseyJul 4, 2010
yep, there will be a second and a third
sugarazorJul 3, 2010
Transformers 2 was a sequel to a very successful, mostly well-received movie. I thought Transformers 1 was awful, but most people seemed to enjoy it and naturally rushed to the theater for the sequel, which turned out to be the cinematic equivalent of small pox. Now, if Transformers 3 does even better than 2, then we'll have a problem.
The Last Airbender is an untested movie franchise, helmed by a director that's gotten progressively worse with every movie he's made (Unbreakable being the exception to the rule), has been universally panned by critics, it has to open against Twilight (which would've broken the opening weekend record if it opened on Friday), and still faces tough competition from Toy Story 3 for the G-PG family demographic. Transformers 2 made $108 million in its opening weekend, I'd be shocked if Last Airbender makes half that.
diceauJul 4, 2010
Honestly while there was a lot of garbage in Transformers 2, I love the actual transformers in the movie so much (the way they move/fight/talk/...everything) I really don't pay to see the movie for a story or anything. Hell, just make a whole movie of epic fights with a tiny amount of plot to allow for cool one liners and I'll be there!

I went into the movie with some friends after reading all the bad reviews, so I lowered my expectations and was generally just going to enjoy the visuals (although they are nothing special). I ended up not too displeased with the movie. Of course this could also be because I have not watched the show, though I might look it up on the internet now.
betauserJul 3, 2010
While I didn't digg you down Kaegro, it takes guts to admit to finding pleasure in something so craptastic, i think your score may be from people thinking you are a troll because you said you like this abomination of the visible light spectrum.

i enjoyed transformers 2, it had a lot of redeeming qualities. Airbender, had none.
sugarazorJul 3, 2010
Really? What redeeming qualities? Megan Fox in jean shorts, which you can see on every other site on the internet? Decent special effects that still don't redeem an otherwise terrible movie and will look incredibly dated in about a decade?
pabloriveraJul 3, 2010

Avatar was great as a tv show. You really did not need to make it into a movie and I'm sure Viacom would have made more money by just leaving it as a cult tv show. After all, it seems $150 million in production and another 100 million or so in advertising seem for naught

It was just a money garb.
It would have worked if...
1. it had been made many years after the show was over
2. it expanded on the story of the show.
this movie had no purpose and thus no soul and then on top of that was created by a soulless director.
dikkyJul 3, 2010
people go to transformers to see giant robots beating the s**t out of each other and thats what they got. there is the understanding that the movie wont be a dramatic masterpiece. the last airbender doesn't have this luxury
sugarazorJul 3, 2010
Sorry, that excuse got demolished in 2008 when Iron Man and Dark Knight showed audiences that an action movies don't have to be mindless schlock. moderntenshiJul 3, 2010
I'm just going to say it: The Last Airbender is what can happen when you demand that directors and screen writers follow the story of something too closely. I was surprised that Shyamalan followed the story as closely as he did, the problem was it all just felt like disjointed clips to some larger, grander movie. Then all that was done in by terrible acting, terrible action, terrible special effects (don't argue with me on this, they were bad), and yeah, it's all just terrible.
I haven't been a long time fan of the cartoon, having only started watching it about a week before the film came out (just started season 2 last night), but I am immensely impressed by the cartoon. I find it really sad when I see the action in the cartoon rivaling anything that was done in the film.
yage2006Jul 3, 2010
No not so much he took many liberties.
Also in the animated version they don't sit around talking about things they have done instead of doing them.
He thinks hes Tarantino or something but at least with QT it works well and has enough action to satisfy.

It will become a cult classic. Just like "Plan 9 From Outer Space", people will gather to see it every year to relish in how horrible it was. They will recite every cheesy line and reenact every rediculous scene (better than the actors in the movie, btw).
At least that's what the studio is hoping for.
sindexJul 3, 2010
It's kind of killing me to hear MNS mangled Avatar and may have ruined my chances to see Toph kick ass in the second and third movies. The animated series is one of my favorite things to have ever been on TV. It's funny, cheesy, action-packed, freaking creeeeepy (the introduction to Ba Sing Se, the spirit in the sunken library), epic as hell and just a well crafted story.
Maybe it will make enough money that the studio makes the sequels, but moves MNS to "producer" rather than director?
I mean, lets face it Chris Columbus made a s**tty first Harry Potter movie and the subsequent directors have turned those into gold. (although to be fair, if reviews are to be believed even the bad first Harry Potter is like Gone with the Wind compared to TLAB).
yage2006Jul 3, 2010
Actually T2 is a work of art next to Airbender. At least they don't sit around talking about action instead of I dunno actually doing it?

I think everyone is forgetting that Avatar is a Nickelodeon show. The critics may s**t on the movie, but good luck trying to convince your 9 year old son that he can't see his favorite cartoon on the big screen because Roger Ebert hated it... Shamawhatever has, without a doubt, been sucking as of late, but I have a horrible feeling that droves of little brats are gonna whine until daddy and mommy bring them to see their favorite Nickelodeon show in live action... frack.

M. Night Shyamalan's IMDB ratings - see how bad he is... oh wait.
The Sixth Sense - 8.2
Unbreakable 7.3
Signs - 6.9
The Village - 6.6
Lady in the Water - 5.8
The Happening - 5.2
Yeah, even the movie "The Happening" which you guys all like to rag on is still rated at average at worst. Perhaps you should face up to the fact that more people like his films than dislike them.
