yeah good list, I agree with many of those, especially arrested development. That was a really funny show but then got cut off :/
cobraclutchAug 13, 2010
As much as I love Arrested Development, I thought it ended at a good time. By the end of the third season, the storyline jokes were starting to become overdone, and didn't seem to pack as much punch as the first two seasons. Glad they didn't run it into the ground (like what's happening with The Office).
Not that Fox gave them a chance to ruin it...

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. was one of the best shows to ever hit TV. Viva Bruce Campbell

Except for that one show he had where MiniMe played Napoleon.

F that. Jack of all Trades was a great show.

Brisco was very good.

RIP Firefly. You will not be forgotten.

Firefly was what I expected the future might be like when I was a kid and saw Neil and Buzz standing on the moon. A kids imagination - half western/half star trek.
Firefly was the best.

Firefly and Jericho my two favorites off that list. Fox entirely f**ked up canceling Firefly. And Jericho didn't get enough viewers? Yeah, maybe that's because CBS aired it on a Wednesday at 9 PM EST. Not a good time.

Seriously though I still cant believe the drool dropping idiots at FOX. They had the next Star Trek on their hands and they blew it out the nearest airlock because it didnt have enough ratings in 10 months. Despite that they aired the episodes out of order and kept moving the time slot.
r1100sAug 13, 2010
I have watched Firefly, Jericho, Freaks and Geeks, and Arrested Development in their entirety after hearing the buzz about how they should have never been canceled.
But I never saw them when they were on the air. Fox simply sucks donkey nuts at promoting their shows.

Add Charlie Jade to the list, if you enjoy sci-fi. Great show, made it one season, then nothing.
Jericho, man what a let down. Canceled the show during a cliffhanger.
chiefucfAug 13, 2010
Supposedly it continued on it comic format, but I haven't had a chance to check it out.
The actors weren't the best and it was sometimes hammy as a result, but I enjoyed the story.
cepsterAug 13, 2010
It came back, though. They gave it a pretty decent resolve at the end.
spacem00seAug 13, 2010
Yeah, it came back for a 2nd season, but again canceled after 6 or 8 episodes, which had a mid-season cliffhanger.
groberts1980Aug 17, 2010
The second season was a half ass attempt to shut the fans up. Then they rushed the ending when they decided to cancel it a second time. Jericho was awesome.

uselesstriviaAug 13, 2010
It could have been good, but he entrusted his franchise to some pretty terrible and inauthentic actors.
It's another example of studio interference + bad acting ruining otherwise good writing.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
allisonaxeAug 14, 2010
Anyone who dismisses the acting in Dollhouse clearly wasn't paying attention to Enver Gjokaj (Victor.) In the second season, his acting was amazing, especially when he was playing Topher's character.
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
Agreed. Faith from Buffy was decent, but nothing special - but Sierra and Victor were awesome, and Amy Acker was incredible. The short string of appearances by Summer Glau were pretty sweet too.
It wasn't motion picture blockbuster quality acting, but for a scifi tv show it was solid. The Topher character and scenes in general were masterfully executed.
balancedAug 13, 2010
Max Headroom was way ahead of it's time. I think a similar concept (a dire/wacky look at the media in a dark future) could work today, if done right. The closest thing we have, really, is Futurama.

kfj3000Aug 13, 2010
Why does everyone always put Arrested Development as a show that didn't get enough attention? The show was on for three seasons. If you can't get an audience in three seasons it's just not going to happen.
Don't get me wrong, I loved AD but I'm just tired of everyone that has some view that the show was railroaded off of TV.
randomerratumAug 13, 2010
You're very right, but Fox certainly didn't do them any favors. They kept changing the air time and breaking weeks up so it was hard to follow. On the strength of the show's critical success, I think they were trying to use it to compete with the other networks, pitting it against big-ticket shows (like Lost and Survivor if I remember correctly). Without the advertising and a huge built-in audience, it just couldn't keep up.
It was just cut way too short for the audience it did have. The characters were so strong and the story barely got wrapped up at all... it really just needed one more season and/or a proper sendoff.
All in all, it's a MUCH better series on DVD (so easy to go through 4 or 5 episodes in a sitting - my wife and I watch the whole series once or twice a year) I strongly urge anyone who hasn't seen it to just go out and buy the first season on DVD... you won't regret it.
punkcatAug 13, 2010
i never heard of the show until it was off the air.
mojomogulAug 13, 2010
The issue was it was never marketed by Fox in comparison to their other shows. I personally never heard of it until an AV Club write-up and caught up on it on DVD while Season 3 aired. During that time (Season 3), it changed nights bi-monthly and then they ran the final 4 shows on some random Sunday afternoon.
This was after it garnered 5 Emmys and 11 nominations.
ljseinfeldAug 14, 2010
@ random: FOX is fairly notorious for launching a show and then making it hard to find. This is also what lead to the (first) death of Futurama.
I'd aslo imagine that the suits would rather make money on reality-type shows where nobody makes more than scale as opposed to having a cast with big name people who will command a much larger salary.
tradwolleyAug 13, 2010
Futurama has already died twice, how did it not make this list.

ljseinfeldAug 14, 2010

paperbackmummyAug 13, 2010
I really liked Pushing Daisies. The network failed to promote it well after the writer's strike, however, and the show lost many of its viewers in just the first season. The show's writer, Bryan Fuller, always gets the crappy end of the stick when it comes to his television series. He's created a few really great shows, but none of them have made it past a second season. The networks they've been on all cancel them for lower quality television. It's a shame.

Pushing daisies was fantastic, and the whimsical presentation was so fresh. Still, I wonder if it would have gotten stale if it ran for a long time. I would have liked to see it get maybe another season, to allow the storyline to play out, but I don't think it had the potential for a longer running shows. There's only so much you can do with that gimmick before it jumps the shark.
paperbackmummyAug 14, 2010
I agree that it wouldn't have done well if it had run more than three or four seasons. I just wanted the plots tied up. Apparently there is a comic book in the works, but there has been very little news about it. They intend to tie up some story lines with that.
allisonaxeAug 14, 2010
I thought of Pushing Daisies when I saw Wonderfalls in the list, as they were both shows by Bryan Fuller.... and then I scrolled down one more and BAM there it is. He really does get screwed often, doesn't he? is he developing anything new?
paperbackmummyAug 18, 2010
Yeah, two new shows. He's creating a TV series based on Augusten Burroughs' book "Sellevision." He's also pitched a show called "No Kill," a show about a no-kill animal shelter, to NBC. There isn't much information about either at the moment, though.
akairennAug 13, 2010
A show devoted to Quark would be awesome. It'd be like Cheers, but with Ferengi.
doctechnicalAug 13, 2010
No. No more Star Trek. That dead horse has been beaten so many times there's not enough left to make a homeopathic solution of dead horse at 30c.
No. Just no.
uselesstriviaAug 13, 2010
I disagree with your assessment but I had to dig you for the homeopathy crack...that was excellent.
Star Trek has been "reimagined" too many times. They kept trying to do gimmicks. DS9 was the last good series because it kept that hopeful optimistic "gene roddenberry" approach to Trek.
Voyager wasn't quite the same because it had a pessimistic tone...it was always these people trapped a bazillion lightyears from home, doomed to never return. Enterprise had a similar problem in that it's tone was "here's the beginning of the bright and optimistic future...but we're not quite there yet".
Honestly I think a new show could be incredibly successful if they just went back to the roots. Get a ship. Get a crew. Go on some adventures. You don't need some new gimmick, and the ship doesn't have to be called Enterprise. Set it in the TNG setting, a few years after the events of DS9 and go to town.
akairennAug 13, 2010
I'm also digging for the homeopathy line - golden, that.
Anyway, I was being completely non-serious, and making a crack at the fact that the article listed a show called 'Quark'. ;) After the sad hilarities that were Voyager and Enterprise, I'm happy enough to let the series rot in the ground. About the only thing I'd want to see is a Klingon-centric series, and that's just never going to happen. :P

Very uneven list. Some crap that never should have even been a pilot (Manimal) along with true jems that were aborted in their prime (Firefly). I'm glad that Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies were on the list. I would have added Space: Above and Beyond, too. Like Serenity it had some clunky episodes, but it was really starting to hit its stride when it got the axe.

A few that come to mind simply because they were cancelled part way through the first season and completely left the story hanging are: Reunion, Traveller, and Vanished.
altairchitectAug 13, 2010
Firefly and Pushing Daisies were definitely short lived.
Pushing Daisies was too whimsical, creative, and fantastic for TV. I wish they had a couple more episodes to wrap things up nicely instead of rushing everything in the series finale.
jshhmrAug 13, 2010
Agreed. Every once in a while there comes a show that is completely original, but nobody watches it. They would rather have tons of cops shows, reality shows, and other crap to watch. Pushing Daisies was my favorite new show.

sgerwel1985Aug 13, 2010
Does anyone else remember a few years back a show called "traveler" or something? It was a show about some college graduates who get tied into this entire terroristic plot and find out their best friend and roommate of 4 years was a terrorist who set them up. So they were on a mission to figure the mess out and i suppose find their "best friend."
If not, i guess i was the only one and i completely see why it failed. Anyways, i did really enjoy that show, it was really interesting show IMO.
shawnbadenAug 13, 2010
Yep, I remember that. It had great potential but I think they only got 4 episodes in. It didn't help it was introduced during the summer season (as I recall). That's always a death nail.

heh... it amazes me that people still think the directors and writers of Lost had some master plan. That show contradicted itself too many times. The truth is that the writers and directors probably don't have a much better idea of what was going on than every one else.
