30 Rock is the best thing they got right now
Closed AccountAug 13, 2010
Their entire Thursday evening lineup was great, although I'm not too optimistic about the upcoming season of The Office and we'll have to see about 'Outsourced.'
norman619Aug 14, 2010
Which is pretty sad.
netantAug 14, 2010
I thought it was pretty insulting that NBC pretends they put out any watchable TV shows, let alone pretending that Thursday night programs were worth watching.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dr3wAug 14, 2010
Community is pretty great
ericccAug 14, 2010
It's pretty good. The writers are getting too self indulgent so it may go downhill fast next season. We'll see.
julikAug 14, 2010
Loved Community... I hope it can keep it going for a few seasons
deathandtavernsAug 14, 2010
It's way better than 30 Rock (he says with arms crossed and will not be convinced otherwise)
casualtAug 14, 2010
It really is. Both the writing and acting is pure gold. Donald Glover is hilarious.
antonmossAug 14, 2010
Don't forget that Parks and Rec's season 2 was absolutely incredible. The show seems to be following the same arc as 'the Office', where the first season was underwhelming but with signs of potential, and with a fantastic second and (hopefully) third season.
clownbloodbzAug 15, 2010
Hopefully Parks can keep that momentum (unlike the Office...don't flame, it's still great, but it lost some its charm a couple of seasons back).
slider121Aug 14, 2010
Community and Chuck!!!
stanly22Aug 14, 2010
Dont forget Parks and Rec. Aziz = funny
confoundedjoeAug 14, 2010
Aziz=Light!
aunttalithaAug 14, 2010
Community has great characters and some great bizarre goofiness. Parks and Recreation has another great ensemble and great plot arcs, very heartfelt, and people accomplishing things together against adversity. 30 Rock is just amazing the way they plot the episodes to whip up such a comic frenzy by the end. Again great characters and cast. Never cared too much about the second office show. Too similar to the original to be very interesting to me plus the acting was much better in the original.
sugarazorAug 14, 2010
I'd say Parks & Rec is their best show right now, which NBC f**ked over by bumping to midseason in favor of Outsourced, which looks dreadful. Community ranks #2 for me after an absolutely astounding first season which just kept getting better with each episode. 30 Rock comes in at #3 for me and will always be a favorite of mine, but it's starting to fall into Simpsons territory with the characters just becoming slapstick parodies of themselves. The Office is still solid too, but I hope they wrap it up this year with Carrel leaving... unless the rumors are true and they're bringing in Ricky Gervais, which would be hilarious for several different reasons.
lucascgcAug 14, 2010
If you were in 2008, yes, that would be true.
Both Community and Parks and Recreations are better now.
30 rock is already reached its peak.

New futurama episodes, and Discovery has "The Colony" second season that I thought was awesome last season. House starts up in a month. Not all bad TV, I think.
ivand67Aug 14, 2010
Futurama is geeky as f**k. South Park is 1000x better.
leonffsAug 14, 2010
@ivand67 You realize this is Digg right? That's tantamount to blasphemy.

@ivand67: It's too bad the professor did not shoot you with the laser cannon when he missed Hitler last week.

Why can't you enjoy Futurama and South Park? They are both awesome.
ljseinfeldAug 14, 2010
@ivand67
I like South Park, but your statement is proof that you'll never go broke if you cater to the lowest common denominator.
ciarAug 14, 2010
house was good for like 5 seasons, and then ... :/
ljseinfeldAug 14, 2010
Agree. Seriously thinking of ditching my satellite subscription and just torrenting the shows I actually like. Even if you had to buy some stuff, 80 bucks a month goes a long way toward Netflix or iTunes fees.
hivoltage815Aug 14, 2010
I tried to ditch cable until I found out it was cheaper to keep the bundle then to just do internet.
clevercommenterAug 14, 2010
Downgrade to extended Basic + internet. its cheaper than digital + internet or internet alone.
pinstripewizardAug 14, 2010
When I canceled my cable tv 2 years ago, my provider didn't disconnect or filter it from my internet line. I'd feel more excited about the free tv if it wasn't 98% garbage.
ljseinfeldAug 14, 2010
I called my phone company (I'm bundled..). 7 mbit dry-loop for DSL is 50 bucks a month, won't need a home phone as I can do skype or some other voip, or just my cell phone.
I can get the NBC, CBS, PBS, ABC, FOX over the air..
This is sounding better and better. I pay something close to 160 bucks a month for phone, sat, and internet now.
antdudeAug 14, 2010
I think we need Internet TV for these dedicated stuff.
everythingsrndmAug 14, 2010
It's cool to say "TV sucks today." Except it doesn't.
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
Dexter
30 Rock
Community
The Office
Parks and Recreation
Big Love
True Blood
Eastbound and Down
It's Always Sunny
Louie
Damages
Sons of Anarchy
Fringe
House
Family Guy
Futurama
South Park
The Daily Show/Colbert
The Closer
Modern Family
Even some of the generic stuff like Burn Notice and White Collar can be entertaining.
Also, it's ultra hip nowadays to say The Simpsons sucks. 'Cept the last two seasons have been awesome and the people who say that haven't even watched. Try not to live in cliches.
everythingsrndmAug 14, 2010
s**t, I forgot The Venture Bros.

Except for that pile of s**t, Family Guy, excellent list. Also, House, pretty crappy...
I would add:
The Pacific
John Adams
Sherlock
Deadwood
Honestly, TV of the past 10 years makes up my entire top 9 of my top 10 favorite shows ever: (In order)
Band of Brothers
Deadwood
Breaking Bad
The Pacific
South Park
The Office
John Adams
Star Trek (DS9, VOY, TNG)
Planet Earth (and sequels)
Flight of the ConchordsComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Nostradamus' predictions, the apocolypse, and after humans?
Future Channel?
zemooseAug 14, 2010
I haven't watched most of the shows on that list, but of the ones I have watched, most haven't impressed me. Futurama, Louie, and South Park are the only ones I know I like.
arfikeAug 15, 2010
All the History Channel's got anymore, if you ask me, is Pawn Stars, WWII in HD (it really isn't your ordinary WWII documentary show, if you haven't checked it out yet) and the occasional special they have once in a blue moon.
Do people really watch Ice Road Truckers? They have this cute chick on now, seems they're digging deep now. And that lumberjack show? Really? We get it: it's dangerous. But you know what it isn't? Exciting!
And don't forget, "Paint drying, next on Modern Marvels." "We're going to explore how nails are made." "We're going to explore vehicle axels." "We're going to explore how mirrors are made." I mean, are they randomly flipping through a dictionary and picking any noun of an inanimate object to get their ideas? Modern Marvels is so dull, but it's been on for years! They might as well show infomercials.

srhatsAug 14, 2010
@GregLoire: Nice catch! The subjunctive mood is dying a very slow death in English... it is sad to see that so many Americans have such little skill with the language these days.
Yes, "If NBC were honest about its fall schedule..." is the correct way to say that.
adamerica2007Aug 14, 2010
If you're one of the few people who understands the subjunctive mood, this can be really annoying. Because almost everyone uses "was". I have a feeling that in my lifetime it's going to disappear from the modern English language, and "was" will become acceptable (sadly)
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
UGH. I KNOW! TO ALL THE COMMENTS HERE!
Why does NO ONE use the subjunctive mood!??!! It's not that hard; if you have an effing conditional...use the subjunctive.
bcsteve2Aug 14, 2010
THANK YOU!
This always drives me insane. It's not that hard a rule either. If you're using an if/then statement to propose a hypothetical situation, you use "were". It drives me absolutely bonkers.
tinkafooAug 14, 2010
guess what.. the language is changing!
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
To everyone complaining about the lack of subjunctive mood in spoken English, just be happy that "goddammit" is so popular. Best subjunctive phrase we have and it gets used all the time.
But the other common subjunctive phrase setup, the "its important that he ___" or "it necessary that he ___" still enjoys some proper use. I hear "its important that he digg that online pedant" a lot more than I hear "its important that he diggs that online pedant."
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
We're not complaining about lack of subjunctive mood in spoken English, we're complaining about how people never use it when they should.
Closed AccountAug 15, 2010
I people never use it when they should, then it sounds like it's not in spoken English now is it? This doesn't mean it's not still in English, but the "spoken" qualification should mean something.

chiffxAug 14, 2010
ABC has Modern Family. That show is awesome.
nerddtvgAug 14, 2010
Actually, both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy are syndicated, so the channel they are on doesn't matter. Both were originally made by NBC, but now with syndication they are made by Sony and distributed by CBS.

Don't forget Castle. That show is awesome!
schmapdiAug 14, 2010
I watch ABC - Modern Family is awesome, Cougar Town is pretty good too (despite it's name - which they are supposedly going to change this season).
Castle isn't great TV, but it's enjoyable. I usually watch it too - though if I didn't have my man crush on Nathan Fillion I probably wouldn't.

There isn't a single show on regular broadcast TV I watch. NBC should bring back "Kings" and pick up "Flash Forward" which I think was canceled. The ironic thing about NBC though, is that USA has a lot of great shows. I watch just about every original show on that network. (NBC owns USA which is why its ironic)
grubAug 14, 2010
I miss Kings too =/ Started out ok, but really developed towards the end
scarycloudsAug 14, 2010
Same here, Kings was a really good show. I rewatched the entire series not too long ago.
hivoltage815Aug 14, 2010
Flash Forward would be good with recasting and rewriting. The dialogue was god awful.
malschlaAug 14, 2010
Anything remotely related to Christianity seems to fail. Kings, Eli Stone... Voltron (kidding). I'm not suggesting there is any conspiracy or anything, I just think that since we live in a heavily Christian nation, people are less likely to watch things that take liberties with shows so close to their faith. It's disappointing, because Kings and Eli Stone were unique and interesting shows.
netantAug 14, 2010
Eli Stone was not a Christianity show. It was a "Deist" show, but none of the stories depended on the existence of a Jesus to carry the plot.
Closed AccountAug 14, 2010
And Kings was a Jewish/Ancient Israel based show, not Christian.
netantAug 14, 2010
USA >>> NBC & (NBC owns USA == ironic)
Agreed. Part of the problem is that TV networks don't pick shows based on quality, but on how well it will attract a certain advertising demographic. Awesome quality TV shows which cannot get higher than a 4 share in "primetime" equals failure. They'd sooner keep the vapid piece of crap, if it gets a 6 share. They'd even keep the vapid piece of crap with a 4 share IF the it had like a 50 share for 18-26 year old males. So if a show is different than anything ever done, but "cerebral", *poof*, they're lucky if they can get a green light from basic cable.
I've always wondered if BattleStar Galactica would have failed if it went to NBC, after the 1st season. And those executives must be beating themselves to a pulp for letting "Covert Affairs" air on USA. Now that, I still can't figure.

bookantAug 14, 2010
There have been reality and competition shows on television since day one. The problem isn't that they exist, just that the ones they're making nowadays are s**tty, all way too similar and derivitive of each other and there are way too f**king many of them.
gusterbearAug 14, 2010
Most TV blows. If it wasn't for the nerd row (Discovery, Animal Planet, History, History Int., Military, Science, Documentary, BBC America, PBS, a few others not mentioned), I'd never have TV at all. Infact, when I move I won't have TV, I'll just go to watching s**t online or via the library.
aoisenshiAug 14, 2010
Funny you mention those channels since Discovery Communications owns Discovery, Animal Planet, Military Channel, and Science Channel.
So I guess Discovery Communications wins.
gusterbearAug 14, 2010
Yeah, Discovery Communication wins for the most part.
Mainly because if I feel like watching a god damned reality show, I get something at least halfway interesting like IRT, Pawn Stars, Axe Men, Deadliest Catch, or Whale Wars, and not Survivor with people trying to mindf**k each other for money.
Although, I admit I probably spend 90% of my time on Science Channel, letting How Its Made and reruns of Through the Wormhole play in the background while I surf the tubes.
harabeckAug 14, 2010

gusterbearAug 14, 2010
Yeah, they go through fads every so often. For a while they were obsessed with Hitler, now 2012. Their evening lineup through the week sometimes bores me.

Meh, I can't really stand Covert Affairs. It seems to just blindly plug more hot people into the USA formula, with pretty mediocre writing. Royal Pains isn't really that impressive on its merits either, but it is more watchable.

I'm about to make the most depressing statement I've ever made: Network TV is the sweet spot of the television industry. Cable blows. History channel is about fiction and irrelevant crap, the 'science' channel is about Science Fiction tech, and ghost hunting. Syfy channle is mostly about talking to the dead. Cable news it... Well, I don't have to talk about that on Digg.
Hell, Joey would be GREAT television by comparison.

The paintball episode of Community was the best episode of any comedy last year. Truly brilliant.
