Coming soon to YouTube from Chris Crocker - "Leave Dr Laura alone!"

She have her 1st Amendt right. She doesn't have the right to NOT be called racist when she uses her right to say racist things.
When people agree with her. listen to her show so she can make millions on the advertisers who sponsor her show is perfectly happy with the 1st Amendment, conversely when people disagree, stop listening to her show and sponsors drop her, she belly-ache about people not likening her
C'mon you rode your 1st. amendment all the way to the bank.
generalobviousAug 18, 2010
...except she didn't say anything racist.
Did you even bother to listen to the clip, or are you just going off on some unwarranted emotional tangent?
Hmmm. I wonder.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
therednewtAug 18, 2010
Just because you disagree with others' assessment, or even if they are wrong, she still didn't have her rights infringed upon. Your rights do not protect you from judgment from others. That's part of THEIR first amendment rights.
generalobviousAug 18, 2010
No, she didn't have her rights infringed upon, but she didn't say anything racist.
That's my point.
sanmanAug 18, 2010
But why doesn't Obama speak up in defense of her First Amendment rights, since he's been so willing to do it in recent times?
Or are First Amendment rights to be selectively defended?
Or wouldn't he possibly just backtrack the next day, depending on what the poll reactions showed?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
wasabibombAug 18, 2010
@sanman: "But why doesn't Obama speak up in defense of her First Amendment rights, since he's been so willing to do it in recent times?"
BECAUSE HER FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS ARE NOT BEING INFRINGED UPON.
It's very simple. I can only imagine the only reason you're having difficulty understanding it is because you don't want to understand it.
ninjaofpatienceAug 18, 2010
I'm white and I can jump, and I am offended.
spinningheadAug 18, 2010
@sanman
How were her first amendment rights violated?
ljseinfeldAug 18, 2010
The racist part wasn't her use of the word "gentlemen". It was her implying that black people only voted for Obama only because he's black. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
manlyandyAug 18, 2010
Actually she did say racist things.
She took a very prominent black civil rights group, the NAACP, and turned it into a pejorative(don't NAACP me). She also totally dismissed legitimate complaints of a black woman as over-sensitivity rather than admit that racism happens and not always in a straight forward way.
She doesn't have to say, "I hate black people" in order for it to be racist.
phucktardedAug 18, 2010
You guys are obviously not listening to the same clip. The caller didn't imply relatives saying gentlemen, but she asked about whether gentlemen is an appropriate word. Dr Laura didn't skirt the question and go on about gentlemen, she was asked about gentlemen.
It is very true that some of people (of every race) voted for Obama just because he was black, and I'm sure people voted for McCain because he was white.
Dr.Laura said nothing wrong or racist. She simply countered the caller's question of the word gentlemen with the fact that many black people say gentlemen in every other sentence. The thought that black people can say gentlemen because they are black is racist. If black people who fought for desegregation and civil rights were alive today they would s**t themselves over how the black community has now voluntarily segregated themselves (BET, Ebony magazine, etc.), and how the word gentlemen is used more so now then it was back in slavery times.
Closed AccountAug 18, 2010
@GeneralObvious Not sure what your point is. She knows the n-word is offensive to a portion of her listeners and sponsors and she decided to use it liberally and flippantly in her talk show. No different than if she decided to have a show asking why you can't swear on the radio and then went on a tear shouting 'f**k' 100 times.
She has a right to say what she wants and her sponsors and employers have a right to react to it, which apparently they did when she sheepishly apologized the next day.
Of course the apology was as fake as the title "Dr." she uses.
I think its fine that she decided that podcasting will give her more freedom of expression but she's playing false martyr by even trying to compare her bulls**t situation to a first-amendment violation.
archiesteelAug 18, 2010
"The thought that black people can say gentlemen because they are black, but white people or any non-black race can't, is racist."
No, it's not. There is such a thing as historical context.
torrangeAug 18, 2010
By completely using the caller's question to go on her rant (she never did address the caller's concerns) shows sublime racism. She said don't NAACP me, if that is not racist, it is completely insensitive.
I live in the south and have heard numerous, stereotypical southerner's use the same argument. Delivered in the right context, the word is very racist and everyone with half a brain knows that. Why is there a sense of entitlement with the word or even a deep concern that a white person cannot use the word. Who cares? Not sure if I have ever used the word but I can tell you that i can go to my grave without using it and I think I will be OK.
torrangeAug 18, 2010
I never said you can't say the word because you are white, I implied that those that feel the NEED to use the word are insensitive pricks. Who cares, it is a word, drop it from your vocabulary and stop worrying about what the other people are saying. Walk a mile before arguing your right to use a word that hurts a lot of people.
BTW what context are you using the word? I cannot imagine how a white person can use it without, at the least, sounding like a complete idiot. The only time I have ever heard it used by a white person was with derogatory intent.
She addressed the caller's concerns for about 2 seconds with a sanctimonious reply before leaping into her tirade.
ddrskataAug 18, 2010
The rant was racist. It was basically like, "Why are you black people so sensitive about racist things people do?
zenmojoAug 18, 2010
Dr. Laura said that people worried about racial sensitivity shouldn't marry outside of their race. How are people ignoring this?
She implied that white people are going to say racist stuff no matter what.
bobadobalinaAug 18, 2010
"But why doesn't Obama speak up in defense of her First Amendment rights, since he's been so willing to do it in recent times?"
Because this is "proof" racism still exists in America. It will help him keep playing the race card anytime his critics point out what failure he is regarding something he can't blame on BushComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
phucktardedAug 18, 2010
Actually torrange archiesteel implied white people can't say that word, I didn't say you did.
I'm not white.
and you have heard a white person say gentlemen without derogatory intent, Dr.Laure said it without a derogatory intent.
Her rant wasn't about "why black people are sensitive about racist things". It was about why do black people pull the race card about the N word (used in any context) from a non black, and say it is a hurtful term that should be abolished, yet go on to say the N word amongst their own company all the time?
You shouldn't marry outside your race if your hypersensitive about race because it will be an issue your whole marriage. That is insensitive but not racist. Nothing the Dr said was racist or derogatory. Insensitive? Some parts were. Racist? Absolutely not.
For the record I don't give a s**t about Dr.Laura.
phucktardedAug 18, 2010
Also Torrange how is it not clear to you that the caller asks about gentlemen. Dr. Laura doesn't rant about it after answering "with a sanctimonious reply". She is asked for her opinion. ASKED FOR HER OPINION. Listen to the clip about 10 more times before you say anything. SHE WAS ASKED FOR HER OPINION. OPINION.
opinion- meaning someone's POV on a subject.
She responded by providing her opinion. Shocker I know, but that's the normal protocol when asked for an opinion.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
davidtromAug 18, 2010
.......except the issue is: was her 1st Amendment right trampled or not.
She said something that may or may not be racist and some people took issue with it and voiced their opinion. As far as I am concern that is the way is suppose to work, she had not issue when people agree with her. Even though most of her talk is inane, but she made millions on her inane advice.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
P.S: I agree, what she said is not (straight-up) racist
phidelt930Aug 18, 2010

The first amendment does not mean that anything you say will be free of consequences.
endustryAug 18, 2010
She has a right to discuss controversial issues--what else is radio useful for anymore?--but she lacks the common sense to know when her abrasive, Judge Judy demeanor will undermine her from the get go. We're all used to political pundits gruffly stating wild opinions but race is not a political issue (at least not exclusively.)
cam_86Aug 18, 2010
Anyone else find it INCREDIBLY suspicious that she claims she is being genuine when she apologizes for saying those words, than uses it as a segue to say her rights are being trampled? I mean she says herself she was in the wrong, but than acts as if its a perfect example of her being a victim. Doesn't that make her a textbook sociopath?
"Sorry i called you those vile words. I really feel upset about it, and am very, truly, super-dooper sorry about it. By the way, i'm quitting because you guys trying to hold me accountable for the stuff i said hurt my feelings even more."
It also does a nice job of framing what you can expect from her future internet venture. It'll be like those 'too hot for TV' direct to DVD things... except instead of ditzy drunk college girls flashing the cameras, it'll be a menopausal hatemonger railing against what she perceives as black sensitivity... all while justifying any sense of victimization they have.
absurdistAug 18, 2010
The first amendment guarantees you freedom of speech.
It does NOT guarantee you a microphone or a platform in which to express your views.
Dr. Laura has already been fired by one syndicator for going over the line. I have a feeling her "deciding not to continue in radio" is code for "my syndicator decided not to renew my contract but is allowing me so spin it in my own fashion."
thatsmyaiboAug 18, 2010
As far as Dr. Laura goes, she may be rough around the edges, but she helps people. She has helped people of all colors, cultures and sexuality for over 30 years. When people call her, they should know what to expect. As far as I'm concerned, this wasn't a racist rant. She was quoting a non PC term. She never directed the word to anyone a called anyone the "n word". Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
staticneuronAug 18, 2010
I hate to pull this card.... but being a black person myself and actually studying the history of the word "gentlemen" I think that this Dr. Laura person is not racist for saying it. The thing is that gentlemen doesn't have any negative meaning or origins, the term became pejorative because of "HOW" it was used. It has such a history in the US because it was intense and the lines between words and actions were very thin back then.
But it highlights a great hypocrisy that goes on nowadays in which the word now has some sort of greater meaning than the context it was used in.
Dr. Laura did, however, say a very ignorant thing. Most black people voted for obama without thinking about it... its a black thing. That is not true at all. Given the history of black people in public office one would have thought this would have been obvious. Obama is not the first black man to try to run for president.
The reason people voted for obama was not because he was black, but more because of his views and if anything could be accused of being blind it is those that vote down party lines. I am sure that those who voted based off of race alone are very few in number.
But that type of view is what people think is racist. Not that it really is racist but it is ignorant. It creates an Us vs them mentality and it really begs the question about what type of discourse she has had with black people (if any at all) to come up with such a broad and sweeping statement.
Yes, americans are to sensitive nowadays about racism but there is also a growing trend of reverse racism, ignorance and blind stereotypes going on here as well. The most common is the silly idea that civil rights activisits, jesse jackson or al sharpton would speak out on crimes against "all" people. If you study the history of where these guys grew up and thier goals period, they often bat for minority rights. The obvious part being "minority" because they do not speak up all the time about cases in which racist attacks happen to whites that is most likely because whites make up the majority of the population unlike the 13% that these guys try to speak for. It is not like a racist attack is going to go down in silence especially with news corps being around. It is simply not necessary. On the other hand there are still many unfair things that happen against blacks in certain cities that if a big stink wasn't being made out of it then things would get ignored. Take for instance the large amount of cases in which officers shoot unarmed black males and get off with a slap on the wrist. while what just happened in denver was on the news without any calls for activists to drum it up.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
somehyjinxAug 18, 2010
What the hell is this racist complaining about? She exercised her first amendment rights without a problem. Exercising freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism. You’d think that for someone making a career out of giving advice on the radio, she might have had a clue that actions have consequences. Screaming the n-word at a caller who has already stated her sensitivity about the word is not advice, it is abuse.

Agreed 100%.
You have a 1st Amendment Right to say almost anything you want. But other people have the right to balk, or hold you accountable for what you said. You totally have a 1st Amendment right to be a racist assh**e, but other people have the 1st Amendment right to call you a racist assh**e, and complain to your employer and your employer's sponsors about you for being a racist assh**e. The whole 1st Amendment Rights thing is a street that goes both ways.
In this country we have things like contracts and stipulations. Especially if we're talking about a radio show and you're offending the people who are listening. The only reason these people are on the radio in the first place because they get enough viewers who buy enough of the sponsor's products that they keep sending the radio station more checks for more advertising.
The 1st Amendment doesn't make you immune to your company saying "You cost us a metric s**t-ton of money with your loud f**king mouth, garnered us tons and tons of negative publicity, made conservatives everywhere look like racist nut jobs, and you offended a caller who just wanted some advice from you. In short, you did the opposite of your job at every turn. You're fired."
She can now exercise her 1st Amendment rights to offend people in other forums of discussion, and even though I'm sure I'd disagree with almost everything she says, I'm not about to stop her. She can be hateful all the way to the bank. It's not my concern or my problem. Nobody else is stopping her from that, either. But this is America. Her employer had every right to kick her ass to the curb. Of all people, you think a conservative talk show host would understand that. They regularly espouse such views on their shows. But I guess that showcases one of the more serious serious moral dilemma for conservatives - hypocrisy.
generalobviousAug 18, 2010
Read the article and listen to the clip.
She didn't say a single racist thing. Unless you think saying "gentlemen" makes you racist (hint: it doesn't).

So when Dave Chappele says black people like ribs, or watermelon, or cornbread it's racist?
O wait no it's not, cause he's black, is that not racist?
Dr. Laura was saying that the neighbor isn't racist, he was just being comfortable around the caller.
The neighbor is ignorant, but not racist. If he were racist he wouldn't be over at the caller's house in the first place. jejeje666Aug 18, 2010
Perhaps what she is implying is that (and I'm just guessing here) she got into a meeting with her higher-ups after that rant, and during that meeting she was expressly forbidden from saying 'gentlemen' ever again while she's on the air.
If that were the case, then I could see how she'd have to quit her job in order to regain her freedom to say what she wants to say.
ultar6Aug 19, 2010
I think that "actions have consequences" is the foundation of most of her advice.
Unless the government stepped in and forced her off the air, or censored her show, her First Amendment rights were not violated.
She's just butt-hurt because she is being skewered by other (lower in her opinion?) people exercising their First Amendment rights.
eezyvilleAug 18, 2010
Sigh...
Another thread about reverse racism is coming. OK before that happens I'm gonna try to be a mediator. Since I'm a black guy I'll take charge and be the race ambassador. Before I start I'd like to say that I'll refer to all Caucasians as "white folk" and all African-Americans as "black folk" because its simple for me, no disrespect.
Now first I'd like to explain why black folk get to use the N-word aka gentlemen. As you all well know not even a century ago black folks were very oppressed in this country. I'm not gonna go into the details but basically the N-word was the one word that symbolized the institution design to hold one race of people, black folk, below and inferior to another race of people, white folk, even though we are all one race. After some drama this racism, what the N-word represented, became illegal and white folks had to treat black folks as equals. Most liked it some didn't. Soon after black folk started to refer to themselves as the N-word and white folks got crazy confused. They thought that what the N-word represented was illegal and wrong but the victims of the N-word is using it. Why did we black folks start using the N-word? Because it still hurt and we wanted to lessen the impact and power that word had over us by making it mean something else.
But to our amazement we black folks were not the only ones hurt by this word. It seems that white folks are hurt too. We didn't see that coming and now the white folks are angry at our insensitivity. So lets try and make it right. Lets designate one day out of the year as N-word Day!! On that day every person in America, no matter what race they are, can say the N-word. Apparently there are a lot of white folks who really REALLY want to say the N-word again. We'll let them relieve themselves of the pent up stress of not being able to say that word because this apparently is SERIOUS BUSINESS for them. Also, judging by the context on which the word is spoken, we can quickly figure out who still is racist and who isn't. And combining the powers of both white folk and black folk we can get one step closer to ending racism in America.
So white folks rejoice! Today is gentlemen Day. Let out all that pent up frustration, stress, and rage and maybe we can get along better.
douglasqAug 18, 2010
"gentlemen Day" has been a pretty awkward part of the year for us white folk since the emancipation proclamation.

The N-word, when said by a white person, evokes a very clear and well-known image of whites subjugating blacks. It doesn't come off the same way when blacks (and to a lesser extent other, non-white races) say it. And even though some say that it's not ok even when blacks say it, some people can't fathom why it could possibly be more offensive depending on the race of the person saying it. But it is. Tough s**t. Go read a history book.
sgxyayAug 18, 2010
The only reason the word evokes that when said by a white person is because black people decided to stay hurt and feeling like victims. I'm all for changing the meaning as black people have been doing, but to make the rules different for different people is weak (and maybe a bit racist?).
Under the "rules" as they are now, when white people say it, in addition to being derogatory to black people, the word is pointing out the evil actions of white people in the past and that black people are still angry about it, like it's still our (white people) fault and we should be ashamed. I'm not ashamed. I don't have anything to do with what happened. I wasn't there. My parents weren't. Those were other people in a different time and the fact that they have a similar tint doesn't mean I have any connection with them. White people don't have some hive-mind that remembers to stay oppressive and racist. I didn't do anything, and I don't.
The word means I should feel guilty about something I didn't do - especially if there are rules about me not saying it. This comes up not just when white people say it, but every time they are told not to say it, AND every time anybody else (including black people) say it. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
manlyandyAug 18, 2010
@sgxyay
Black people are still seen by many people as inferior and still feel the socioeconomic disparity resulting from slavery and civil rights denial. You, personally, still have advantages over black people for no reason other than what happened before you were born.
No, you didn't cause it. But disadvantages blacks didn't necessarily cause their own problems either. It is a societal problem that you don't get to exclude yourself from as long as you participate in society. The N-word is a leftover relic from a terrible time that will continue to be offensive until the long lasting effects of slavery and civil rights denial have dissipated. Which is not now. And likely won't be in your lifetime. So deal with it.
torrangeAug 18, 2010
@sgxyay
Any particular reason you feel you NEED to use the word? Do you think you could live a full life without saying it? Not sure why this issue is such a big deal to white folks? i never use the word and my happiness has not suffered. The word has a history and conjures up ill feelings, not sure why that is so had to understand and respect - get over it redneck. Note: I used redneck from one white guy to another so it is OK, right?

It's not so much about letting white folk use the word, as it is about the EQUALITY that was fought for and eventually won by black folk. It is wrong to celebrate a victory for equality by forcing a new inequality upon those you fought against (not you specifically, but the general "everyone fighting for equality" you in this sense).
As a white person with many black friends, I only want to feel equal. If they can use the word, I should also be able to, OR if they don't like it when I use the word, they should not use it around me. When they are able to use the word when talking to each other, but they don't like it when I use the word, because I'm not black and haven't earned the right, that's a backward step. Use it or don't use it, that's not the issue. The issue is choosing a side (use it or not) and sticking with it for everyone, and not discriminating based on skin color, which is exactly what black folk fought against.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The only way to make the N-word not hurt is to remove its power. The only way to remove its power is to ignore it.
If black people responded to white people who say, "gentlemen", with a shrug or "whatever" and walk away, then the word will fall down to the status of honkey, cracker, and any other word that white people shrug at or ignore.

when one is able to step back from their racist views or actions, they can see that they aren't anything that would make any reasonable person happy or proud. in fact, down right embarassing. racism is a lot more than the n word, hell, the n word is more than the n word, it's a symbol. it denotes contempt for some, others see it as a kind of solidarity. many (white) people can't understand the nuance, why is it hate filled when i say it, but camaraderie building when you say it?
older black men often use the n word in a qualified sense, kind of that an individual has the character flaws attributed to black folk by racist white folk, lazy dishonest, etc. "the guys that make us look bad".
should have the freedom to use it (there are legitimate uses, mostly in terms of witnessing an event), should also have the sense not to throw it around.
personally, i'd be happier if black folk dropped it from common use, one less thing for ignorant bigots to whine about, but i never had any skin in the game, so i'll not tell you how to work that out.
rahammAug 18, 2010
Am I the only one who listen to the first part of the clip where a Black asks about a her neighbor coming over to her house just to ask if "Black people like this or that thing" to which this Laura lady was like "well that isn't racist." EVEN THOUGH IT IS. Black people aren't all the same Laura and you are a racist.
PS not all racist are the same either.
You should not "be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". Once this radio lady said it was ok to ask questions of this other lady about all black people she was a racist the N word was the icing on the cake.
ator1Aug 18, 2010
The term "reverse-racism" implies that the only true racism is white-against-black. What kind of racism is it when an Asian hates Mexicans? It's all just plain old racism.
smotpokerAug 18, 2010
Actually, the term implies a form of racial prejudice that was induced by paranoia and hatred of racism. The races involved don't matter.
Racists were taught to hate and fear others because of their race alone. Reverse-racists learned to hate and fear racists but wind up becoming racists themselves when most of their experience/observations of racists are overwhelmingly of one race.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Bull s**t.
Black people say gentlemen (gentlemen) because "it's cool"
Same reason why wiggers and cholos say it too.
When you hear on a rap soong
"I'm a pop that gentlemen, kill him, rape his gentlemen mom, then gentlemen gentlemen gentlemen his gentlemen with my gentlemen" That's not the black community trying to lessen the impact of a hateful word, thats the black community using a hateful word because "it's cool" to convey hate towards another black person.
This nation needs a serious race discussion.
The black community needs a serious discussion about black on black hate.
And everyone who likes rap (music in general) needs to realize that what they are listening to is decided by a few white men in business suits, who make millions to sell them this garbage.
The same rappers who are selling you "gentlemen this, pop a gentlemen, gentlemen that" are against what they are doing, but they know it is a business about $$$.
Watch "Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" if you wanna a good race/music discussion.

@Pureeviljester - Arguably blacks are much less oppressed this decade, however don’t lose perspective that it wasn’t long ago they were slaves. The repercussion from that era is still palpable. What would you think happens when for generations you denied even the most basic education to a group of people? What would you think happens if you tell them they are inferior for generations and generations? The effects will linger long after supposedly the oppression cede.

"The reason is, I want to regain my First Amendment rights," she said. "I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I'm sort of done with that."

I can just cut and paste this one:
No, you obviously didn't listen to the offending clip. In it a African American caller asks for advice on how to handle her white in-laws who constantly taunt her race. Laura totally skirted the question and went on a screed about how blacks can drop the "N Bomb" but whites can't. She seemed very upset by this, as if all her life all she really wanted was to use the N word in polite conversation.
The caller never even implied her relatives were using racial epithets.

Most blacks I know don't use the word and don't like the fact that it's always being put in the media by comedians and rappers like that's somehow representational of us. We don't control those media images. What you see are examples of the lowest class of black people that are being paid a lot of money to be shown as representing all of us. They're idiots that don't mind getting paid at the expense of the rest of their races image.
In general, you'll find the only blacks that use or endorse it's use are rappers, comedians, and the young ones under 25 that haven't figured out the media slander game yet and just follow everything they see on a screen. Most that are over 25 are well past that. Defending the rappers saying it only came about because ones that used it were being banned and censored, so the whole "explaining why THEY use it" thing started. But most normal everyday blacks absolutely do not use it. If anything, for the simple fact that nobody wants white people to start thinking it's okay.
Things are put out in the media because it provides for good entertainment to whoever they're trying to market to. Seeing blacks act like idiots on screen has always been good business. But don't confuse that for how we really are. We are misrepresented in the media, don't let what you see and hear in it control your ideas of what we like, don't like, or are okay with.

Dr. Laura's show is very much a tough love tough advice sort of show. I hardly ever listen to her - only enough to know, roughly, what she is. She specializes in telling people things they -really- don't want to hear, and sometimes that kind of advice, for that particular woman, is warranted. Everyone is different, every individual case is different. Maybe Dr. Laura was trying to pass along the point that if she's very sensitive about some things she should try to avoid them, or at least think on them more. Sometimes people need to be verbally shocked to get out of a hard rooted self repeating mental trap.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"Maybe Dr. Laura was trying to pass along the point that if she's very sensitive about some things she should try to avoid them, or at least think on them more. Sometimes people need to be verbally shocked to get out of a hard rooted self repeating mental trap."
She had relationship issues. Race was a problem, perceived or otherwise. She was stuck in a mental conundrum and Dr. Laura was (like she usually does) saying things to get her to -think-.
Victims of real racism do not need tough love. They need to take the initiative and do something about it - like Dr. Laura was broadly suggesting in the segment. Instead of complaining, and being stuck in complaining, get off your butt and -do something-. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I'm pretty sure she was saying that if you don't want to accept the reality that may come with an interracial marriage, then you shouldn't have one. kungfumantis239Aug 18, 2010
They were discussing racism. Granted repeating the word over and over again was a little over the top, she was never actually being racist.
treehugger87Aug 18, 2010
So because you don't hear racism you want somebody else to take responsibility for the content and the perceived racism by those who did hear racism. I'm not convinced that her rant, standing on its own, is racism either, but I don't blame the owners and producers of her show for forcing her to resign. Ultimately they are responsible for the content of their broadcasts, and if they are not comfortable with the risks it is well within their rights to let her go.
It is also well within your rights to join with capitalismKills and start your own broadcasting company and hire her
kungfumantis239Aug 18, 2010
There was nothing racist said. They were discussing racism, so in those confines, for the sake of debate alone, was anything "beyond bounds".Once again, granted a little better word choice would have gone a long way, saying the N word several times over is no way to get someone to listen to your POV, but her point was still sound.
As for the company getting rid of her? I would too. But that's a different subject.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
torrangeAug 18, 2010
They were not discussing anything. The caller tried to get advice and Dr. Laura used it as a platform to vent her frustration. Why she was frustrated is another question but the underlying tone was definitely racist. I grew up around it and it is pretty easy to spot even when subdued.
I used to do traffic for a company that serviced the station she was on and I had to listen to her all night - this is not her first venture into sublime racism - just the first time she used the word.

Ugh, I am so SICK of people invoking the First Amendment without having the vaguest clue as to what it actually means.... The First Amendment DOES NOT guarantee you an audience OR a platform to make your voice widely heard; all it guarantees is that the government will not step in and tell you "you can't say that, period." Radio and TV stations are in no way obligated to provide airtime to someone who drives away audiences. If she were thrown in jail for her words - THAT would have been a First Amendment violation.

Black caller married to a white man doesn't like comments made by friends and family. Comments refer to race, are sometimes offensive.
Husband stands by, doesn't take issue with comments.
Caller asks Physiology Dr. Laura for advice on how to improve the situation.
Physiology Dr. Laura launches into a tirade, complaining that blacks voted for Obama solely because Obama is half black. Physiology Dr. Laura goes on to say the n-word over and over again, apparently because she's been waiting for the right opportunity to say it over and over again.
Now Physiology Dr. Laura is complaining that she needs to reclaim her First Amendment rights as a result of the uproar. Unfortunately, Physiology Dr. Laura doesn't realize that others exercising THEIR First Amendment rights does not constitute a violation of HER First Amendment rights.

No one's saying she called the caller a gentlemen. No one's that stupid... except you. But a couple of the things she said in her explanation were plainly stereotypical and racist -- and no, not the use of the word "gentlemen".
norman619Aug 18, 2010
Nope. As I said, I'm a minority and have experienced REAL racism growing up. People like you love to throw that term around so much that it has lost its true meaning. I have had to deal with racism from blacks, Hispanics, and whites growing up. She did not display ANY kind of racism.
iignotusAug 18, 2010
LOL what term did I throw around? Or even use? "Stupid"? Did you just copy and paste that response from somewhere else? It literally has no bearing on what I just posted.
Nice failure.
spinningheadAug 18, 2010
I think people might acknowledge that if she wasn't such a sanctimonious hypocritical bitch to begin with.
ultar6Aug 19, 2010
No, it was her rant, which was not at all helpful to the caller, then spicing it up with the n-word and Obama rants.
We saw her true colors shining through.
ivanmarshAug 18, 2010
You clearly didn't listen to the broadcast.
seedypeteAug 18, 2010
Yes, an "academic discussion." Plenty of those involve saying slurs over and over and over again out of spite! Then telling the caller not to marry outside of their race. Then implying that all black people everywhere use a slur because you heard a few comedians and rappers say it. Then when the caller says she doesn't use the word AND finds it offensive, saying it three more times in a row with no context whatsoever. Academics!
You racism apologists are so terrible at this.

Her want wasn't f**king racist!! That's the whole f**king point of what she said. Listen to her show.
All she said was "gentlemen". She didn't call the woman gentlemen.
She said "all black guys say is gentlemen gentlemen gentlemen" - that is NOT a racist statement.
Goddamn people are f**king stupid and overly sensitive.

ultar6Aug 19, 2010
@GeneralObvious:
Could it have been the glee in her voice when she said it and the number of times she said it after that? Could it have been the racists accusation that blacks voted for Obama (unsolicited) solely because he is half black?
Fake Dr. Laura showed what she was about. She took a real issue and turned it into her personal joke.
purvisxiiiAug 18, 2010
"all black guys say" sounds kinda racist to me.
generalobviousAug 18, 2010
hahaha
betteroffedAug 18, 2010
I can't stand Dr. Laura. I think she's overly conservative, and her opinions are completely hidebound and cloying on to the past.
But I agree with you. Why is this word the only slur for which we can't even SAY it while discussing it. Anderson Cooper or any other news anchor or tv personality has to say "the n-word" when referring to it. There's a huge difference between saying slur and using a slur, and that difference seems to be completely blurred with this word. If a US senator called an italian person a "guinea" or a hispanic person a "wetback" the press would have absolutely no qualms about reporting exactly what he'd said without resorting to using "the g-word" or "the w-word." Why is that? Why are we so paternalistic about that word?
Dr. Laura is abhorrent. But she never actually used the word. I think that distinction is important.

Are you saying that "guinea" or "wetback" is less offensive that the n-word?

betteroffedAug 18, 2010
Is that a joke? "The N bomb" is the ONLY racial slur that merely uttering the phonetic syllables that make up the word itself is wrong. You can't even say the word itself when discussing the word intelligently. News anchors have to say "the n-word" like they're 5 years old. There's a big difference in saying a racial slur and using one, and those two distinctions don't seem to matter with this word.
I guarantee you that there could be an entire History Channel show on the word "kike," its origin, how it was used by anti-semites, and they would never feel obligated to say "the K-word."
Why is that?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

artosrcAug 18, 2010
PEOPLE WHO ANNOY YOU:
Dr. Laura!
pintomp3Aug 18, 2010
Her use of the N-word wasn't the racist part of her rant. Her presumption that racism was over because we have a black president and that all claims of racism were simply people being "hypersensitive" revealed the extend of her racism and bigotry. She then compounded it by telling people not to marry outside of their race if they don't want to subjected to racism.
iignotusAug 18, 2010
Exactly, 100% right. All the people complaining about "not being able to say gentlemen, even in an academic context" are completely ignoring the actual issue. As far as I'm concerned you can say gentlemen all you want if it's being used simply for explaining a point. It's her stereotypical and racist assumptions about the black race, not the actual word "gentlemen", that intelligent people have a problem with.
xsecretsAug 18, 2010
if someone asked her what do girls think of blah wouldn't it be hypersensitive of her to go off saying that person asked her a sexist question or if you ask a banker what do bankers think should they have a cow about how you are jobist? It's a simple demographic question and yes the caller was being hypersensitive.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
stavrogin2Aug 18, 2010
Did any of you people saying that she's not racist read or listen to Laura's rant? She said that a black woman in an interracial marriage should not mind her husband's white family calling her the n-word because black people use it in rap music and that if she doesn't want to be called racial slurs by her white in-laws, she should not have married outside her race.
How the f**k is that not racist?
kaiosamaAug 18, 2010
The point everyone seems to be missing, seeing as they hearing the 'N' word and totally ignoring the context around it.
Dr. Laura's advice (and I use the term Dr. here very loosely), absolutely gave bigoted advice.
I mean seriously, she's talking to some woman calling into her show, and treating her like she's ghetto hood chick who should be used to derogatory language. Wtf is that all about?

smokedgoudaAug 18, 2010
He can but it's a dumb thing to say.
nainsellAug 18, 2010
Context. You can't hang a lampshade on something your race perpetuated as malice. When a black person says it, it's context is solidarity in the face of racism. When a white person says it, the context cannot be that, because the white person has not suffered the same history.
nainsellAug 18, 2010
"So you're telling me when a black person says "Couple of gentlemen robbed or house and stabbed my brother" they are showing love and solidarity?"
But you said to his black FRIEND. The context of saying it to a thief is different, and you know that.
supradaveAug 18, 2010
Because it's racist.
iignotusAug 18, 2010
If he's your friend, why not? No one said he can't. Except you, since you're just trying to build on top of white-fright and the idea that white people can't say or do things that minorities can.
basalcellbosskAug 18, 2010
"Can someone explain to me why a white man cant say "my gentlemen" to his black friend?"
Because of hundreds of years of subjugation, genocide, institutionalized torture and murder of African people and continued persecution of their descendants right up until living memory, based solely upon their skin color.
That s**t just does not get forgotten in a generation.
You are not responsible for what your forbears or their contemporaries did. But you can't just pretend it doesn't leave a scar.
ivanmarshAug 18, 2010

The word "gentlemen" is short-hand for "Negro", a term used by almost every culture in the world when referring to "Black" People. The Black Community, as a whole, uses the word "gentlemen" to claim brotherhood in a struggle for Freedom in the mid 20th century.
Most Black People living today cannot say, truthfully, that they have ever experienced being a slave. Ever.
Do you EVER hear about White People calling each other "Crackers"? No.
Only Black People use both racist terms.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I hear my Irish relatives calling each other Micks all the time. If you did that, I believe youd get your ass kicked.
Closed AccountAug 18, 2010
The "black community" as a whole? Um, sorry that isn't true. There plenty of black people who don't like it when anybody uses the word, even for comedic or rhythmic effect. Not saying that this is/isn't right, just that you are a douche for thinking you can speak for the so-called black community (as if such a single entity exists).
Besides that, your point is moot. Doesn't matter what a word's etymology is, only what it means at a point of time in a certain culture. "gentlemen" might mean "ice cream" on Mars but here in the US it means something else.
Furthermore, and I'm assuming you are mostly caucasian here, you just used both terms in your post you hypocrite. Sure for example purposes, but you said only "Black People" (why is that capitalized again?) use both terms.
ultar6Aug 19, 2010
I don't think the "Negro" community, as you put it, came up with the n-word. If they had come up with it, it wouldn't have the negative connotations it has now.
In one context, it's an expression of brotherhood. In another, it's a derogatory term born of institutionalized subjugation...oh, and of racism.
If you can't tell the difference then you should erase the word from your vocabulary. Yes, there's a double standard. Live with it, don't use the word, don't complain that you can't use the word, and guess what...
The word will fall into disuse.

THIS IS f**kING BULLs**t!
First I will state that I have same respect for people of all races and color.
Now,
Can someone explain to me why a white man cant say "my gentlemen" to his black friend? Some of the hypocrites will say that when black people refer to each-other as gentlemen/gentlemen they mean to be respectful, loving or showing solidarity. Well, I f**kING disagree. Too many times you will hear phrases like "Them gentlemen robbed me", "Couple of gentlemen walked up to Tyron, and stabbed him" So where the f**k is solidarity or love in these cases?
TRUTH IS: Blacks use gentlemen/gentlemen not only to show respect and solidarity, but in most cases they simply use it to identify black people - WHICH IS FCKING WRONG.

supradaveAug 18, 2010
I will because you don't get it.
tenshenAug 18, 2010
oh a white person can say it. in fact some white people still do on a regular basis. gentlemen is a racially charged word with tons of regrettable history behind it. it will remind that way in the foreseeable future. no matter how much people whine it will remind so.
so see, your rights are not violated. there's no double standard. when you say the word gentlemen, the government will not fine or arrest you. that's freedom of speech. just don't expect not to suffer the social consequences that comes with uttering that word in mixed company. sort of like saying the word **** over and over again in a conversation with of group of females.
spinningheadAug 18, 2010
"Couple of gentlemen walked up to Tyron, and stabbed him"
I don't believe anyone has ever said this to you ever. You have been watching too much TV.
iignotusAug 18, 2010
If you grew up in a culture where people said "my gentlemen" all the time, no one would have a problem with you using it just because of your skin color.
But chances are you grew up in a much more privileged and better house and neighborhood than most blacks, of which there probably weren't even that many in your neighborhood.
In this case, it doesn't fit into a category of "racism", it simply goes into a category of being totally out of context and stupid. It would be like trying to fit in with hispanics by going "heyyy what up homes! can you believe dis essay!" It is not something you would naturally learn to do or behave like, and you're only doing it to either (improperly) try to fit in, or simply to try to push your luck about the issue.
Not being able to understand this simple idea is part of the reason why racism still exists.
jspafAug 18, 2010
you

the racism didn't come from her gratuitous use of the n-word. it came from her extremely judgmental comments based on the color of a person's skin and her class-less cheap shots using black institutions as an insult for effect.
however, you are right when you say f**k double standards.

Um. there is no "standard" just a general acceptance by the greater US culture. If you desperately feel the need to call your friends "gentlemen" then go ahead.
I'm just tired of childish white boys whining about not being able to say "gentlemen". Say it all you want you dimwit. Just be prepared to pay the consequences if you offend someone.
Why shouldn't you say it in public? Because it is vulgar and lower-class, same as any other swear word.
ultar6Aug 19, 2010
Wow! Just Wow!
Every white man on Earth should avoid the phrase "My gentlemen".
Really? You don't get that? You don't realize what that means to someone who is black?
It's not about the word. It's about the subjugation that has been historically attached to the word.
It's not about who gets to use it and who doesn't. If you're dumb enough not to know the difference, don't use it or accept the consequences when you do.

Aside from being racist, she's also a total bitch. When I was 12, I went to a fat camp. Best summer of my life. She had a short lived television talk show at the time, and her people contacted the people from my camp, and they ended up asking me to appear on the show to talk about my experience. I was a spunky kid, and thought it would be super fun to be on TV, so of course I agreed. They flew me and my mom from Seattle, they picked us up in a limo, it was fabulous. So the day of the taping, I show up at the studio and I'm a little nervous but totally excited for my tv debut, and my chance to talk about how much fun the camp I went to was. I'm escorted onstage, Dr. Laura joins me, and so it begins. Not once does she mention the camp I went to. She kept trying to make me say things that would make me sound like a sad, pathetic little thing. The last straw was when she asked "Now, Taryn, I understand that you are the only overweight member of your family. Doesn't that make you feel like an outsider in your own home, like you don't belong?" So I'm just like "Noo....your family's your family no matter what you look like." I got a standing ovation, and she looked kind of pissed that I didn't break down in tears with some pathetic little affirmation of what she said. At the end of the interview, I managed to throw in a little one liner about how awesome my camp was and how everybody should go, which the director of the camp, who was told his camp would be prominently featured in the show, thanked me profusely for. God, she was such a nightmare.

Why does she keep going on and on about her "First Amendment right" being ignored? The First Amendment only prevents the government from censoring your free speech; it has nothing to do with radio shows, sponsors, or public opinion / outcry.
govtdoesnotworkAug 18, 2010
We may not agree on much, but you're spot-on here. Dr. Laura's spreading of First Amendment ignorance, while not quite like repeatedly saying the N-word, is likely to lead to bad things, especially because Larry King was/is too dazed/old to correct her. Dr. Laura hasn't just got free speech, she has a megaphone compared to most other people, and her n-word filled rant hasn't (yet) changed that fact.
