What's the question mark for? Because you've never heard of him, or you don't want to see them make the film? Well, this quote should answer both:
"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - 'No, you move.'"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

lordbalderdashJul 21, 2010
based on who's directing, i'd say it's the other way around.
with joe johnston the best you can possibly expect out of captain america is a mildly entertaining flick. branagh, otoh, is actually a really interesting choice to direct thor. sure, it could still wind up being a turdbiscuit, but there's at least a slight possibility of something special there.

Bart: Ohh, all these new superheroes suck! None of them can hold a candle to "Radioactive Man".
Milhouse: The only decent new one is "Radiation Dude".
Bart: Nah, he's just a cheap imitation of Radioactive Man.
Milhouse: Explain.
Bart: The similarities are subtle, but many. For example, Radioactive Man has his famous catch phrase, "Up and at 'em!" with "at 'em" spelled A-T-O-M in a delicious pun.
Milhouse: Go on...
Bart: While Radiation Dude has a similar but lamer catch phrase, "Up and let's go!"

I'm going to be amazed if they can actually pull this off...
niubaiJul 21, 2010
Am I the only one that really thinks that all these superhero movies are for children ? Superman, Ironman, Captain America, Fantastic Four, Green Lantern, Demon Man, Anteater Man, I don't know, everytime I see a movie with dudes flying in colorful clothes saving the world from supervillains I put them, automatically, in the "movies for children" category.
Perhaps it's because I'm not american, I don't know, different cultures, different views, but I can't picture a 30 years old dude being all excited to watch a Captain America movie.
Dark Knight was great, but in first place, it was more a thriller than a superhero movie.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Closed AccountJul 21, 2010
MOST of it is nostalgic factor. That being said, totally stoked for these movies.
kronos6948Jul 21, 2010
Read Nietzche. He'll explain the whole idea of the Ubermensch to you.
Also, I guess you put action films in the children's section too, since they're basically superhero films sans some superpowers.
falconearJul 21, 2010
Niubai: Superheroes have become like our Pantheon of Gods. We have no heroes anymore, so we've invented them. It's not a children's movie, it's like a Greek going to see a Hercules film.
And yes, I'm 33 and very excited about Captain America.
whomodJul 22, 2010
Yep. It's modern mythology. It's also finally risen past the dismissive assumptions like yours about it being 'for children' with directors and actors alike taking these films seriously. As was the case in Dark Knight and Iron Man.
I could never understand the reasoning behind taking something like say 'Count of Monte Cristo' or Zorro as "literature" but something like "Batman" as kiddie stuff simply on the fact that the former is older. Both the count and Batman had a history of being published in serialized chapters for the entertainment of the masses, along with all the obvious similarities story-wise.
But just like knowing old Hollywood movies somehow make one a "film scholar" and not just a person who watches a lot of movies (or is just old), there is always someone trying to make themselves something 'more than' thru mere snobbery. Same with thinking old heroes of the 19th century make one knowledgeable about "literature" and on the other hand, being into the JLA makes you a dimwit.
Hopefully the era of pretentiousness is almost over and we can finally enjoy our modern myths as popular adventure for the masses and an integral part of American popular culture and not look derisively on them as if they somehow make one stupid for liking them.
patodruidaJul 22, 2010
@Niubai,
"Perhaps it's because I'm not american"... I didn't know you had to be American to have access to the work of Carl Jung or Joseph Campbell.
I mean, I'm Mexican and I am familiar with both (as well as with Nietzche's "Ubermensch" concept, which Kronos6948 mentioned).
Not to mention how Alan Moore brilliantly deconstructed the whole concept with Watchmen (interesting fact: he's not American, either).
I never bought into that whole "all of Latin Americans are brothers" bulls**t but, honestly, you make us all look bad...

That's a movie still from a film that's in-production. None of the visual effects have been tweaked so I don't get how you could possibly predict the quality of it from that picture.
Having said that, I do believe Odin's beard should be much longer :(
Closed AccountJul 21, 2010
I like the comic. It could be done well, but I don't think it will. But the writing team, save for one of the four, does not have a great record for this sort of movie. And since this isn't Shakespeare, I don't have a lot of faith in Branaugh as a director.
Oh well, if Marvel's going to be rebooting it's franchises every few years, here's hoping the next one will be better.
whomodJul 22, 2010
ROTFLMFAO!!!
THAT pic is exactly why people are counting more on Captain America than on Thor. Thor from the get-go has looked and sounded rather cheesy. Almost as some necessary prerequisite to get the Avengers done.
Captain America is comics legend. Plus it really has all the elements necessary to make a really good film. WWII history and war action. A time lost hero. Some nice pathos out of his lost life and lost love. the elements of his story which really tie in the various strands of MARVEL characters, especially Hulk.
Now Thor. Interesting in theory but even in the comic, there is a lot of cheese to have to wade thru. Not the least of which being the Shakespearean acing which is real easy to get some assh**e actor into thinking he has to be over the top since it is after all 'comic book". Yes, Hopkins, i'm looking squarely at you. Clash of The Titans (both versions) had a real difficult time with the cheesiness of portraying 'gods'. Not even Olivier could accomplish it cheese free so i hold no great hope for Thor. Especially not after seeing that pic. I could pour that s**t on nachos.

airwalkeJul 21, 2010
Okay, I know *of* these characters, but I've never been fully invested in their comics/stories. I think Thor is supposed to be part of the Avengers, and is supposedly in the Avengers movie along with Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and any others I may have missed.
I could definitely see how they could tie Iron Man, the Hulk, and perhaps Captain America, but I still fail to see how Thor's back story ties into the overall conflict those other three face. Those three seem to fall into the pseudo-science origin category, while Thor is a God cast down to earth to fight off otherworldly beings?
Could anyone more familiar enlighten me how they plan (or have?) combined these stories?
bpolitteJul 22, 2010
Originally, Loki, Thor's archenemy manipulated the Hulk into going on a rampage, which required Thor, Iron Man, Giant Man and the Wasp to join forces to stop him. So Thor, in a sense, was actually the impetus for the group forming. Cap didn't join the group until issue 4.
Closed AccountJul 23, 2010
I don't think they'll include Hawkeye. I think if The Avengers does well, then they will add Wasp/Giant/Ant Man and Hawkeye for the sequel.
bpolitteJul 23, 2010
I thought that Hawkeye had been cast already, that Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker was a verified as playing him.
Unverified rumors are Nathan Fillion as Hank Pym. Hopefully that will be announced in San Diego, but who knows.
