I freaking love it. I can finally tell what my friends are digging and look through upcoming stories and get them to my friends on co-workers. Its also nice that topics that would never ever make it to the front page actually get comments and discussions going.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
crunchdiggAug 18, 2010
I hear he's already got 3 sleeper IDs. Expect odd front page stories about some digger's kids momentarily.
sexyboboAug 18, 2010
He is a marketing genius.
He would never have gotten http://billcosby.com/mobile/ on the front page of digg but one small tweet and boom goes the dynamite.
wildAug 18, 2010
Sheesh. Talk about internet marketing 101. Pick a popular website, attach a cool celebrity, just happen to mention your new iPhone app...
(Oh, and new.digg is terrible in its current state. I don't need a dupe of my facebook feed, or content creators using auto-submitted stories since I have had something called an RSS reader for years...)

"Interesting opinions on race"?
He's not interesting; he's right, and he's one of the few minorities standing up and trying to help their race by telling them to stop blaming whites and make something of themselves. Telling kids they are at some type of disadvantage, that they can't succeed, and that they are entitled to something that isn't theirs is what is what is holding blacks and other minorities back nowadays. Kudos to him.
chlsmithAug 18, 2010
Not just right in respect to minorities....he's right in general. Teenage pregnancy, fatherless kids, and drugs aren't just a black problem.
xdreAug 18, 2010
@rpatrick819: "he's one of the few minorities standing up and trying to help their race by telling them to stop blaming whites and make something of themselves."
No, he isn't. He's just one of the few that the mainstream media has paid attention to.
"Telling kids they are at some type of disadvantage, that they can't succeed, and that they are entitled to something that isn't theirs is what is what is largely responsible for holding blacks and other minorities back nowadays."
Sorry to disappoint you, but it's nowhere near that simple. Even Cosby would tell you that.
@chlsmith: Exactly.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rpatrick819Aug 18, 2010
"No, he isn't. He's just one of the few that the mainstream media has paid attention to."
I meant few as in percentage, not a handful. But I'll also admit that statement is largely ignorant in a lot of ways. I'm white, and don't get to hear what goes on with blacks behind closed doors. I can only speak on what I see outwardly. If there is a lot more of this going on between blacks, then that's absolutely great news to hear.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but it's nowhere near that simple. Even Cosby would tell you that."
As far as race is concerned, yes it is. There are a lot of other issues plagueing blacks (like high concentration of living in the inner city), but these problems are sociological problems, not race, and should be addressed as such. I don't believe there is any sort of argument to say a white kid living in the inner city has some sort of advantage over a black (or other minority) counterpart. If you have some specific examples (especially if you are a non-white), I'd like to hear them, because I understand I can't completely understand, even though I grew up poor.
xdreAug 18, 2010
rpatrick819: "If there is a lot more of this going on between blacks, then that's absolutely great news to hear."
It very much is a regular conversation. The problem, however, is that whites have become so defensive about even the hint of racial inequality that they take it as an absolution of any social responsibility.
"As far as race is concerned, yes it is."
Excuse me for being blunt, but how would you know?
"There are a lot of other issues plagueing blacks (like high concentration of living in the inner city), but these problems are sociological problems, not race, and should be addressed as such."
Sociological, sure, but don't go thinking that race isn't a factor.
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/White_flight
"The business practices of redlining, mortgage discrimination, and racially-restrictive covenants have been credited with accelerated white flight to the suburbs. The denying of banking and insurance and other social services or the exorbitant prices of said services increased their cost to residents in predominantly non-white suburbs and city neighborhoods.[6][7] Furthermore, according to Laura Pulido,[who?] the historical processes of suburbanization and urban decentralization contribute to contemporary environmental racism."
"I don't believe there is any sort of argument to say a white kid living in the inner city has some sort of advantage over a black (or other minority) counterpart. If you have some specific examples (especially if you are a non-white), I'd like to hear them, because I understand I can't completely understand, even though I grew up poor."
Here's one big one: Put a poor inner-city white kid into nice dress clothes. He blends in without a trace. Put a poor inner-city black kid into those same clothes, and the same thing cannot be said. Even his resume will betray him.
I say again: This is a much, *much* more complex issue than Cosby's speech made it out to be, and particularly given the history of race and power imbalance in this country, telling blacks that all their problems would be solved if they just stopped blaming the white man is a breathtakingly arrogant stance to take, because the erroneous assumption behind that thinking is that blacks are too lazy to take responsibility for their own lives. That, my friends, is a stereotype straight out of the days of slavery.
cosworth99Aug 18, 2010
FTA -"71 percent of blacks feel that rap is a bad influence."
So only 29 percent of blacks listen to rap? I think he's right that change has to come from within. As a white man who lives in Canada and was born colour blind, I look at America and see parallels with out own First Nations peoples (Indians). This truly transcends race borders.
Stop blaming whitey and get off your ass and fix it.

The bottom line is that there is not an equal playing field, in education or anything for that matter. Sadly there is always going to be someone above someone else.
