Nice submission but this guy seems to be movie addicted and also getting some of the impressions on his mind after death of an individual in a movie.

Hey I cried when Spock died!

Arnold did not need to die in T2, he could had just repair himself and live a normal life. But as A machine, I guess he was instructed to self destruct after the mission was over.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You never actually SAW the movie did you? He very clearly explains why he needed to destroy himself. Because it was the chip from the original Terminator that was used to develop Skynet. And since they figured they had just prevented that from happening, they needed to make sure that no one could ever possibly get their hands on that futuristic technology again. Hence, they needed to destroy the Terminator.
mrzaikoDec 24, 2010
I did see it maybe way too many times since 1991. His explanation of why he needed to be self-destruct has nothing to do with the fact that he could actually stay active and just not give his chip away. =)

what bugged me even more about the enemy at the gates scene was he didn't even give the other guy time to look where the shot came from, and the other guy was looking at the guy who got shot in the head when he was shot, so he couldn't have seen where that shot came from. but the ending part pretty much makes up for it when he's standing behind him by the trains and the sniper realizes he's screwed.

I really liked this movie, however from what I learned afterwards, it's historically inaccurate. Based on a true story, altered by Hollywood. I guess real life just isn't exciting enough.
cme884Dec 24, 2010
I hate to be the guy to nitpick, but the last two bear some clarification.
First of all, as anyone who has watched the end of "The Iron Giant" knows, the giant doesn't die; his pieces were coming back together after the explosion. Also it could be argued that he consciously chose not to use his superweapons because that would make him seem like the death machine he was created to be.
Second, after being tripped by the Balrog, Gandalf is able to hold onto the ledge. He consciously lets go so he could go fight the Balrog, which he sees as a worse threat at the time.
And one last nitpick about the Cracked article in general: I'm surprised they didn't bring up the part about I Am Legend where the entire ending was rewritten. They usually love linking to past articles, and there's a good one that explains how in the original ending, he doesn't die and the title of the movie actually make sense.

Dude. It's Cracked.com. Not the Wall Street Journal.

Not just that...It's cracked.com...if you expect more than what a 5 year old would be able to write, you are severely overestimating them.
cme884Dec 24, 2010
I'm not expecting them to be other than what I expect them to be, and they failed as far as cracked.com standards usually go. That's all I'm saying.
calcheesmoDec 24, 2010
In the book that I am Legend is actually based on, he is killed by the zombies, but in a much more legit way. The "I am Legend" title is supposed to represent how he is the monster in their (the zombies) legends. They are now the "norm", they are the inhabitants, he is the one hunting them when they sleep, setting traps for them, etc, etc. In the book, they catch him and have a big sacrificial ceremony, finally catching and killing the monster of their legends...but that wouldn't satisfy Hollywood, although it would've been AWESOME.
ktothec99Dec 24, 2010
In the book (or novella actually) it is implied that he chooses to kill himself rather than be killed. The ending flips the whole story around, the monsters he has been killing throughout and describing as pure evil view him as the monster and are trying to get justice. Oh and they're more like vampires than zombies.
filksingerDec 24, 2010
You forgot to point out that the entire argument that Gandalf could have just broken the bridge before the Balrog gets there assumes there is no other way across the chasm in all of Moria. Gandalf didn't break the bridge to stop the Balrog from *crossing* the chasm, he broke the bridge to dump the Balrog *into* the chasm.

As a scientist working with highly dangerous subjects (zombies), you would think Will Smith would install some emergency UV lamps all over his lab just in case.

I'm pretty sure if Peter Jackson changed the "death" of Gandalf, Tolkein fans would be up in arms.
dang3rousdDec 24, 2010
Yeah, I've gotta disagree with the final 3 as well.
1. The Giant doesn't really die and even if he didn't know that he would survive I think that he didn't use the weapons specifically because he was rejecting that notion of himself.
2. Joseph Fiennes character does try to help I guess but it was more of a suicide because he thought the woman he loved was dead.
3. And the fact that Gandalf chose to follow the Balrog down below to fight him.
Overall still enjoyed the article, just felt that the arguments this time seemed like they came from someone who got the crib notes and didn't watch the whole films.
agmlauncherDec 24, 2010
"3. And the fact that Gandalf chose to follow the Balrog down below to fight him."
Still a dumb choice. Gandalf did exactly what he needed to do: buy the fellowship about 15 seconds of time. There was zero need for him to continue fighting the Balrog.

dugg for reviewing the death Data exactly as I felt when I saw the film at the theater and stormed out immediately when the end credits rolled. I hated that death and felt B4 still being around at the endmade brent spiner's argument to kill data pointless.

A great article, but I feel there's tons of explanations for the deaths of some of the characters listed that are either wrong or actually explained differently in the movie. Like Data's sacrifice, Neville's Nade Death (Which actually never really happened in the comic or the directors cut), the fact that the Zombies in I Am Legend were actually Vampires (don't worry, they messed it up in the movie too), the Iron Giant's reason for diverting the nuke, etc etc. Most of the sacrifices were for some practical reason in-print, maybe no represented well in the movie mind you, but for a good reason or two. However, I'd have to devote about as much time it took to put together the article to explain said sacrifice reasons while simultaneously making myself look like a gigantic nerd-a-saurus.
But still an entertaining article nonetheless.
