I like the idea, but I don't think I'd lend my car out to MY neighbors.
wjappeMar 15, 2011
That would be unsettling.

In a country like this? No. Hardly anyone has respect for anything but their own (heck, even in that case people still don't have respect for their own things).
I take good care of my possessions, expecting the same from other people is just too much to ask.
darronwolflxMar 15, 2011
That's something very difficult to compromise with so definitely it's a no but hard times is again a different situation.

Nope, never. I barely want my friends/family touching my car, let alone a stranger. People beat the s**t out of rental cars, this would be no different.

I currently use a car sharing program up in Canada. I have to say, for my needs it is amazing. I only pay for what I use, which ends up being less than $100/month (that is member fee, gas, maintenance and insurance). It isn't for everyone, and I am fortunate enough to live in an area which has good transit options (bike, bus, walk).
entroperMar 15, 2011
Well, no, but no one wants to rent an RX-8. At least, no one who I'd rent my car to. :P
It's an interesting concept, though, given that there are services that will insure your car for whomever is driving it. But I don't think I could possibly make enough money from this to make up for the possibility (probability) that my car is being dogged every day.
brucealmightyMar 15, 2011
Nope, too worrisome not knowing where the car is or how it's being driven once it's out of sight. Also, if a neighbor screws up while driving my car that's likely to continue being uncomfortable for as long we remain neighbors. Not worth it just for a couple extra bucks now and then.

As many mention no, based just on expectation of the treatment the car would get from non-owner. But, more importantly, this question is mute in the US. Most drivers in this society need their car in expected or unexpected ways 24/7. Mass transit is unreliable or absent over most of the territory and "needful things" way too far for walking (walk an hour to the supermarket because my neighbor has my car? - no way).
calidreaminMar 15, 2011
well, if you're heading on a 2-week vacation or trip somewhere and leaving the car at home... not really needed 24/7.
cryinlionMar 15, 2011
i love the concept but i'm just way too uneasy about what happens when the car gets damaged. OK there's an insurance policy...do you really believe you're getting the full value of the car back with no hassle? what if a smoker borrows the car and leaves a couple cigarette burns in your seat? is the insurance gonna cover that? or if someone spills a beer in the backseat?
entroperMar 15, 2011
They actually do cover that, and they have a feedback system so that drivers who do that more than once or twice are banned from using the service. But it requires you to inspect the car every time you get it back, and then you have to make a claim if something happens, etc. It's more of a hassle than a liability.

Not for me. There's just too many little things that would annoy me. Such as the small dings and scratches. You might not notice them right away, so who pays for them? How about if the person thrashes your car while driving it?
gkiltzMar 16, 2011
Don't need the cost of having my car treated like a rental
garyshaplandMar 28, 2011
Sounds a good concept in principal, have to see how that pans out in the future
