I think a lot of people would soon turn against Apple. One of the things that makes people so loyal to Apple is that it's so pure. It's like they are so confident in themselves they can do it all on their own in house. A buyout would seem like Sony is doing something better than Apple and Apple needs them.
badqatOct 28, 2010
Honestly, I doubt that would do anything to break the cult of Mac.
Once you go Mac...you can't go back...which isn't true, because I've got Windows 7 installed on mine: as both a boot camp partition, as well a VMware machine, too. I must say though, Steam for the Mac is quite promising.
You pay a significant premium, need to buy Apple Care, but it may be worth it at times. Apple customer service is simply phenomenal, the hardware rarely breaks and Mac OS X really is a thing of beauty.
A "pretty, pretty; shiny, shiny" POSIX compliant Unix. Tasty!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

That isn't true for many reasons. I know quite a few people who got a Mac after all the hype, and decided not to get another one with their next computer,.

I love how one person buried my comment as if that somehow makes what I said not true.
threemagicOct 29, 2010
I think you were buried not because what you said isn't true.. I'm sure it's happened a lot, it's a different OS and some people just can't change. It's the fact that you said badqat's post wasn't true... it is
gordigorOct 29, 2010
I've never understood why people want to buy Macs. The selection off software is small. I guess if you just want to surf the web maybe.
threemagicOct 29, 2010
The selection of software is the same, not counting the myriads of bargain bin crap or malware of virus checkers. If you mean utilities? Well sourceforge is chock full of OS X utilities. The only software that is limited is games and I have a playstation 3 for that.
norman619Oct 28, 2010
"I think a lot of people would soon turn against Apple. One of the things that makes people so loyal to Apple is that it's so pure."
Pure what exactly? PR, Hype, and bulls**t?
mca2142Oct 28, 2010
Here we go:
1. Apple has purchased the company that engineered the A4 processor.
2. Apple has purchased the coverflow technology
3. Apple has purchased the company that wrote iTunes
4. Apple has purchased the music streaming service lala
5. Apple has purchased the mapping company Poly9
6. Apple has purchased eMagic which led the way to Garageband
7. Apple has purchased NeXT, the creators of the OS X
8. more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Apple
danbarkerOct 28, 2010
Yeah, but NeXT was created by Steve Jobs so you should discount that really.
lnmagicOct 29, 2010
Ooohh buy Pixar from Disney!
charlotte_webOct 28, 2010
Apple mostly buys up-and-coming tech companies, not established behemoths.
geogeerOct 28, 2010
Actually, NeXT got paid to buy Apple.
coltraningOct 29, 2010
I'm with you on this. Does mca2142 understand that Steve Jobs personally ran NeXT and that basically Apple paid them to take over the company and become the new Apple?
threemagicOct 29, 2010
I dunno why you 2 are being dugg up because that's the most ridiculous thing I've read in a long time...
here's FACTS to support the truth:
http://news.cnet.com/Apple-acquires-Next,-Jobs/2100-1001_3-256914.html
geogeerOct 29, 2010
@threemagic - my comment was a little facetious. However, given that Steve supplanted Amelio as CEO and that senior people at NeXT were moved into positions of power in the company, it is essentially true. NeXT essentially acquired Apple from the inside - or Jobs reacquired Apple. However you wish to phrase it.
batonryeOct 29, 2010
Google is also built from acquisitions. Such is the way of the giants... I would LOVE to be bought by Google or Apple :)
anubis1345Oct 29, 2010
Steve Jobs actually founded NeXT so it would make sense he would take his own company with him to Apple.
adml_shakeOct 28, 2010
mca2142, I just have to ask what the point of that list was? Those aren't really the same thing. If Apple bought Sony they would suddenly be thrusted into markets that they've never been in or had any experience with. Not really the same thing as apple buying chip and software companies to further a product like that they've already spent a large amount of time developing, or had for a while already.
I really can't see them doing this, I think Apple is pretty happy with where they are at right now as far as their product line goes.
bossm4nOct 28, 2010
That would create quite the juggernaut.
milpheyOct 28, 2010
from the X-men?
smurfzOct 28, 2010
I would like to see what Apple could do with 3D technology.
nairebisOct 28, 2010
Presumably Steve would kill it, because 3D is anything but tasteful.
chrisvazquez1Oct 28, 2010
Or useful. It's a cool niche but a useless niche.
norman619Oct 28, 2010
3D technology? It's dated and has no real use. It's a gimmick nothing more.
philbertOct 28, 2010
How is brand new tech dated?
chrisvazquez1Oct 28, 2010
I wouldn't exactly call it "brand new."
adml_shakeOct 28, 2010
how is it brand new? It's just a evolved version of the red and blue glasses.
philbertOct 28, 2010
Well it couldn't have been done 10 years ago. It was barely getting started 5 years ago. Sure the concept of stereoscopy and stereoscopic cameras have been around for over a 100 years, but the tech used today is completely different from the ancient anaglyph style of yesteryear.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
chrisvazquez1Oct 30, 2010
You do realize that CRT tv's generally have a faster refresh rate than LCD tv's? Refresh rate plays a big role on current 3D technology. It was done in the 90's. Idk what you're talking about.

Um I'm pretty sure steve jobbs owns pixar, i.e shrek, apples already in that pie so to speak

No, Disney bought Pixar making Steve the largest shareholder in Disney.

Um I'm pretty sure steve jobbs owns pixar, i.e shrek, apples already in that pie so to speak
lnmagicOct 29, 2010
Not much until they start using current-generation graphics cards.
rufiohoOct 28, 2010
naw, I like the competition. I wonder if the feds would allow it?
badqatOct 28, 2010
The EU would probably be a major opponent of such a merger. I can see Apple wanting its own factories, but Sony is a huge company with its toes dipped in many different niches.
Apple doesn't need the factories bad enough to actually purchase Sony, but I suspect there would be no objection from the U.S. side of things if Steve Jobs were suddenly stricken with a case of stupid and actually wanted to buy them.
norman619Oct 28, 2010
What competition? Sony and Apple don't have much direct competition.
absolutelytrueOct 28, 2010
Heads would explode.
hbyrneOct 28, 2010
Think the unthinkable.
hediggmeOct 28, 2010
They would create the world's most expensive laptop
chrisvazquez1Oct 28, 2010
Oh wait...Actually Sony already has the most expensive laptop. Surprisingly Sony is more expensive than Apple.
jimv1983Oct 28, 2010
You get more for your money with a Sony laptop.
chrisvazquez1Oct 28, 2010
Not true. Look at Apple's specs on their high end laptops.
norman619Oct 28, 2010
PS3's would suddenly become far more expensive.
chrisvazquez1Oct 28, 2010
Based on what facts?
norman619Oct 28, 2010
Based on Apple device pricing, the price of tea in china, my grandfather's aching bunions, and humor. You know what humor is right? Maybe I should have used the /j for people who don't get humor.
chrisvazquez1Oct 28, 2010
You do realize that the PS3 is already at an adequate price right? Sony can lower the price but they don't because they want to keep the brand expensive. Apple would keep it at the same price or lower.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
norman619Oct 28, 2010
wow...
kartman2001Oct 28, 2010
They don't price them lower, because they are already lossing money on everyone they sell.
norman619Oct 28, 2010
kartman:
I'm not sure if I should bury you or digg you. Could you please be a bit more specific? Who can't price what any lower?

Sony can't price the PS3 any lower.

Apple sucks
wosayitOct 28, 2010
This will never ever happen.
This is like the days before the Xbox, Bill Gates wanted to buy Nintendo. The Japanese will never sell out to some barbarians.
Never going to happen, ever.
diggeradoOct 28, 2010
Like Apple has enough money to buy Sony? Somehow, I think not.
altotusOct 28, 2010
Sony's market cap is only $34 billion dollars. Apple's cash reserve is about $45 billion. If they pay a 20% premium on Sony stock, they could buy it outright. Of course, that's a whole lot to blow at once (though they'd spin off chunks of it and recoup some of that).
I'd rate it as highly unlikely. Sony's not a good buy for Apple.
Adobe's cheap -- and Apple could nip all that Flash-talk in the bud. That might make a lot more sense.
hardeep1singhOct 29, 2010
Market cap isn't the real value of a company.

How would such a corporate marriage work? The impression is that Sony makes products that come off as overly complex, while Apple makes products that come off as overly simplistic.
jrod65Oct 28, 2010
...both tried and true sales techniques for making their customers feel smarter for over-paying for their products.

If apple bought sony, you'll see the prices go sky high. www.elizabetholiveirahairextensions.com
charlotte_webOct 28, 2010
Like the author of the article said, Apple (Steve Jobs) loves simplicity. Apple loves to develop one or two products in a particular category, and have it be unique.
When Jobs came back to Apple, Apple's business model was all over the place. They had set up the clone market, and in 1997, there were over 20 different models of Macs that Apple was selling. Steve chopped off most of that, and just offered four: a consumer desktop, a workgroup tower, a business notebook, and a consumer notebook. And while Apple has expanded their product matrix to sell other items like iPods, iPhones, and iPads, they don't like flooding each category with a wide array of products.
Sony has a reputation for quality, but Sony offers up a smorgasbord of electronics. They have to, because that's what big electronics companies do. But that's just not Apple's way.
adml_shakeOct 28, 2010
Apple has what, 40-50 billion in spending money right now? I'm not sure that would be enough to purchase the whole company outright.
tigararaOct 28, 2010
I don`t see what Sony could do with 3D technology!

it will become another Microsoft
johnomazzOct 28, 2010
BFD, I don't buy Apple s**t anymore and haven't bought Sony s**t in ages with the exception of the PS3 simply because I couldn't bring myself to buy a blu-ray player for more/close to the price of a PS3.

You couldn't be serious.
dondada619Oct 28, 2010
I can see why Apple would be interested in moving more into the home theater business since it and the home computing business are rapidly becoming one. Buying Sony would not be the route though. Apple's track record shows they would probably look to an emerging company not an established one. They don't want to improve something, they want to invent it.

The world would be a lot s**ttier than it already is.
jimv1983Oct 28, 2010
