I seriously can't understand why you "conservatives" have one set of rules for the people that you love and a completely different set of rules for the people you hate.
Senator Obama doesn't have any experience while (she who shall not be named from Alaska) would be a great vice president because she was Mayor of a small town and partially through a term as Governor.
We can't dare ask rich people to pay taxes, but we can cut funding for projects that are designed to help out the poor because people are poor by choice.
The government shouldn't be allowed to have any say in the matter of health care but they should be able to tell a woman that she can't have an abortion.
Gay people shouldn't be allowed to get married, but unwed teenage mothers should get paid thousands of dollars to be on TV and speak at colleges.
When the government asks you to pay taxes it's socialism, but you have no problem funding an endless oil war.
I've tried really hard to understand the logic behind conservatives, but I've come to the conclusion that there is none.
It's all a bunch of fear, willful ignorance and hatred that seems to drive you into opening your mouth and taking a stand against your own interests.

@alienkid f**king brilliant post. Am copying paste forwarding your political enlightenment to some people I know.

"I seriously can't understand why you "conservatives" have one set of rules for the people that you love and a completely different set of rules for the people you hate."
Actually, you may well have nailed it right there. I read a fascinating research study a few months ago which reports a correlation between political views and self/other classification. (Wish I could think of some decent search terms so I could cite it instead of just talking about it.)
It observes that emotional responses such as empathy and charity are found to the same degree in both conservatives and liberals. The difference is that conservatives tend to have these responses primarily about themselves, family, and groups with which they closely identify, whereas liberals tend to respond more broadly.
Isn't that elegant? It would explain so much. It may just be the setting of a particular internal thermostat, so to speak, but of course this is going to lead to major ideological differences. Conservatives follow a strategy of exclusion. Liberals are inclusive. To liberals, conservatives are going to look like heartless hypocrites. To conservatives, liberals are going to look like, well, traitors.
So far, we're not talking about who's right or wrong. These are just emotional tendencies. However, that's not to say there is in fact no right and wrong about it. Evolution will probably sort it all out eventually.

They both want a theocracy, they just want different religions running the show.
canyoucountMar 10, 2011
They both believe in Jehovah, the God of the Talmud?
enantiodromiaMar 10, 2011
Sort of.
Each of the three religions have their own special version of Ba'al/El/Yahweh/God/Allah/*.
canyoucountMar 10, 2011
Heh, yeah, that's why I chose the deliberately archaic "Jehovah" for my slightly snarky comment. ;D

It is a very interesting topic, how these religions propose they share one true God, yet when you go back far enough that was not the case.
canyoucountMar 10, 2011
How different does the worship of a deity (and the conception of the deity embodied within) have to be before it's a new "species"? Even "Christian" harbors a wide variety of beliefs and sects..

Because when two very Conservative groups make contact, and when they both claim to believe the Sky Wizard is on their side, peace will never, ever happen.

Most Muslims are actually pretty cool with evolution. Islam is one of the most science positive religions out there. You are actually supposed to seek to understand science so you can better appreciate just how much of a badass god is. That's why they were doing science while we had the dark ages.
That said, there are whack-job young earth creationists in all Abrahamic religions.
rgb86Mar 10, 2011
Eh....historically, Muslims have contributed a ton to science and mathematics, but in the modern day, the entire Muslim world contributes less than MIT alone (I believe that was the university, though I can't seem to find links to the old story).
enantiodromiaMar 10, 2011
They actually did contribute some, but mainly they preserved science, math, and philosophy from the Hellenic and Indian cultures, while Europe went through their ridiculous experiment of letting the Church nearly wipe out a thousand years of progress.
If it were not for those darn Muslims, we would know little to nothing about ancient Greece and all of the knowledge which came from Athens during the Classical Age.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Funny that someone dug you down. Shows more about them than you, what you wrote, or reality.
Fact is that Sulfuric Acid, which is the workhorse of modern chemistry, was invented by an Islamic chemist about the time Islam was founded.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfuric_acid
If you look into mathematics history, you find that Algebra was invented by the ancient Babylonians and further developed by Islamic mathematicians.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebra#History
The Greeks did not pick up Algebra until later.
I know, it's not socially acceptable to quote facts that other people who have impulse control problems and learning difficulties do not agree with.
But it is pretty clear that the ideas and science that are the basis of making things go come from ancient places and people that included Islamic scholars, to say the least.
I do not think I need to say more than that or that others should know less than that.
johnnysoftwareSep 2, 2011
We were having the Dark Ages because 'conservatives' and their religious organizations in Europe were burning science books.
Meanwhile, the the middle east -- they were not burning them, they were collecting them and reading them.

I dislike Palin in politics as much as anyone can, but this is a stupid article. Palin suggests teaching both evolution and creationism in schools and letting kids debate. That's a stupid idea, but it's nothing like the Muslim extremists in the article who are sending death threats to a professor who suggested Islam is compatible with evolution.
I also hate the whole "in common" thing. Yes, Stalin was an atheist and so am I, but that doesn't say anything more about either of us.
enantiodromiaMar 10, 2011
If it makes you feel better, Stalin actually came from a very religious family, attended seminary school on scholarship, and in his final years, went back to religion.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Isn't Leyton just six miles away -- in England! -- from Charing Cross, where Jack the Ripper killed his victims?
I thought this happened overseas as I was reading the article. Then I went back and checked Wikipedia and found, no, Leyton is a place in England!
