Congratulations everyone who can now be proud of who they are without feeling like they need to hide it.
Equality for all.
arschgaudiDec 19, 2010
If only they'd had the political will to do this instead of DADT originally.
cherwilcoDec 19, 2010
the military couldnt handle openly gay soldiers back in 93 and clinton wasn't about to put gay soldiers at risk by just forcing the military to accept them, so DADT was created to at least allow them to serve. a good first step that allowed the military to get used to the idea and now DADT is gone.
Fred_WDec 20, 2010
Its repeal also won't protect them from possible repercussions of being openly gay now. Policy may change out here in the civilian world, but the military is run on a different set of rules. Soldiers only have the right to do what they are told, and if they buck the system then they will feel the foot in their ass.

It would be up to commanders to make sure that one individual would not be in another individuals chain of command if they are in a relationship. I have had to make those adjustments in my own unit when two Soldiers begin to date. Not a big deal.
charlotte_webDec 19, 2010
The UCMJ has strict restrictions on behavior by servicemembers. No PDA is allowed while in uniform.
charlotte_webDec 19, 2010
Coincidentally, I was just IM'ing with a friend who's an Army officer over in Iraq. He just met a girl, but sex is out of the question because, as he put it, "there's no place to go." Their respective barracks don't allow members of the opposite sex. With the overturning of DADT, it makes you wonder how it will affect policies like these. Because ironically, there would be plenty of opportunities for gay sex between the service members on that base, but no opportunity for straight sex.
wf80diditDec 22, 2010
Interesting thought. Not sure how they'll handle those situations. It wouldn't be fair for the hetero's to have to see two men breaking each others backs in the shower stall everyday. You'd think they'd have to rescind their policy to make it fair for everyone now. This whole thing looks like it could get very sticky soon.
charlotte_webDec 22, 2010
Shower stalls? All of boot camp is open bay showering, and many duty stations, too. What's the solution -- install stalls everywhere, or behavioral training? Passing the law is not the quick and easy solution. There's a lot of work to be done.
wf80diditDec 23, 2010
I doubt anybody will be getting it on in bootcamp. There's absolutely no time and eyes everywhere. I was Air Force so all the dorms I lived in that had communal showers always had stalls for privacy. Most of my tech school was at Ft Gordon (Army Post) and we lived in same type of buildings as the Army so I assume theirs was set up the same. Also there was 4 people to a room, so again eyes everywhere. Even the shower tents in the desert had stalls where I was at. Maybe it's an AF thing w/ the stall, idk. The only time I ever showerd in an open bay was boot camp and we were allowed approx 15 seconds to clean up.
The behaviorial training is going to take a lot of time. There will be lots of harassment and abuse going on in the beginning stages. I predict a Matthew Sheppard type case by the end summer.

btschulDec 19, 2010
That's just until the tide of public opinion shifts. I have a feeling this will go the same way it did with racism. For a while, they'll still milk it for all they can, bashing gays in every way imaginable, blaming them for every problem they can, and then once the societal consensus shifts and gays are accepted by religious people the way African Americans are now, the religious apologists will start going on about the horrors of the evil Atheist repression of gays and how the brave and moral christians fought and were persecuted for standing up for the rights of the oppressed homosexuals.

I am serving in my Army Reserve weekend today, and I was thrilled to read this on my phone shortly after the Senate vote. I have served for 20 years in many units, along side many homosexual Soldiers who were honorable, competent, and truly good people to work with. This is truly a victory for the United States military.
There will always be those who will allow this change to affect them negatively, but fortunately, these days those are not in the majority anymore (I agree with the comment above that this would have been difficult in 1993...I was there...). The modern Army (my frame of reference) is different than it was 17...20...25...30 years ago...Soldiers are more tolerant, more privacy is given to Soldiers, and even in a training and deployment environment, you don't share quarters with Soldiers nearly as closely as you used to (there are exceptions of course...).
The modern Army has adapted...it's unfortunate that some Repubs have not figured that out.
rethreadDec 19, 2010
The Navy, having always lived in close quarters with mates, has long ago adapted to reality. Aggressive, unwanted advances from anyone end in a severe beating. 3rd strike was over the side, middle of the night. NOBODY made 3 strikes during my enlistment. Otherwise we could have cared less. Still don't, apparently. The military takes care of its own. 1994, checking in.

After the first couple sentences I stopped reading. Being in the military, I actually got this poll (everyone in the military did). It should be noted that most protesters asking to repeal "Don't ask, don't tell" were never in the military. So now, instead of having protection under DADT from ever being questioned about their sexuality, they'll be forced to talk about it and likely get harassed by their company as a result.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
captaincumshotDec 19, 2010
I know of three people in my platoon that are gay. It in no way affected me when they told me. And don't bring up that it's different in combat arms; I am combat arms. They knew I was straight, never made any advances, didn't care about me in the shower, etc.
But let's continue this argument from your stand-point, which is obviously "I don't want no fags hitting on me!!! ARGABLARGO {insert emotional and irrational bias here}!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Are you saying that for the fear of someone actually being hit on, we should just segregate gays from everyone? What happens when you get hit on by a person you are not attracted to? Do you demand to have them separated from you, or do you take some kind of rational approach like explaining to them that you're not attracted to them?
slapshotoiDec 20, 2010
lol
You completely ignored my post and hence missed the point of what I said, Mr. Cumshot. I never mentioned how a gay man, telling me he was gay, would affect me, nor did I ever mention having a fear of being hit on by gays. Instead, if you took the time to read, I said how this change will affect them. Don't ask, don't tell, means just what it says. Now that it's gone, everyone in the military has the right to question you about your sexuality, and If you actually believe all parties in the armed forces will be okay fighting alongside a known homosexual, you're very naiive.
To summarize my point: DADT was a smart move, it didn't deny gays to join the armed forces and it added protection for them as well.
To answer your inane questions:
1) Are you saying that for the fear of someone actually being hit on, we should just segregate gays from everyone?
Nah, not if the guys being hit on are mature enough to handle it, but having known several Marines, I know that at least some of them aren't.
2)What happens when you get hit on by a person you are not attracted to? Do you demand to have them separated from you, or do you take some kind of rational approach like explaining to them that you're not attracted to them?
I just ignore them if they talk to me. It's not nice, but it's rational.
Next time, calm down before you respond.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

When I served, we had both men and women that watched our back (not literally) Most wouldn't admit they were gay, and I for one didn't give a s**t. They did their job and that's what counted. rethreadDec 19, 2010
I note that a pro business amendment was rewritten to avoid obvious exposure on the surface historically. And that two Republicans who voted for the bill, voted against voting in the first place (cloture) to look good, basically after the decision was a done deal.
I know this is one of the things Obama requested of Congress and that the people and military personnel support the decision. If it had to come from a Libertarian or Republican, so be it. It could have come from Daffy Duck. The people and the military already decided years ago. It has been in effect for years already.
Now, let's bring them home and try to fix the budget. Wars are expensive.

You would almost think all those hateful, manipulative republican "leaders" (and democrats for that matter) would have always wanted the gays the go fight and die for all their behind-the-scene schemes ... it's a sad, sad world.

We, the people, fight for what we believe in. The govn't allows us to rapidly concentrate those efforts where they are needed, and it is not a sad sad world. I expect you to do your part to make the world less sad. As I do of the folks who lead the direction of this country. Are we CLEAR soldier.
Wow. Flashback practically. Race, ethnicity, sex, religion... Never had a place in the military. When people are shooting at you, anyone who shoots back in your time of need, is keeping your ass alive. Literally. Transcends the BS.

i'm not really sure what all that rambling was about LOL but i most definitely do my part, thanks for your concern, my family and friends and myself live generally happy peaceful lives full of love.. transcending the BS, as you put it, i hope you do the same and practice you preach :o) Beautiful world, no doubt! but it is a sad sad world out there too, if you don't see that, you're blind.

Note that this received a number of Republican votes as well. When will the gay community realize that the Democrats just use the GL community for votes and don't really care about them as people?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

House Republicans: 15 Yes 160 No
Senate Republicans: 8 Yes 31 No
So, 10.7 percent voted "for". all the senate "no" votes were Republican. Nice try. Technically correct, and not fooling anyone.

Well it was kind of useless, if anything even more bizzare, that you could've had a spy gay among you. :)

nice to see we are not persecuting minorities in this country. took until 2010. and it's still kind of weird that it's a 'military' thing... as in it's strange that humanity still needs militaries, kind of f**king sad... but progress i guess.
