why only the western world?
josephhoracekFeb 6, 2011
Because we live to eat.
rudegarFeb 6, 2011
well that may be so but what confuse it is narrowing it down to the western world only as far as I know the western world is the fattest so why not say the world
stating it like this is like saying Usa home to fattest men and women on the American continent
if they are the fattest in the whole world why not just state that?
breadfredFeb 6, 2011
It is the daily mail. To them, the Western World IS the Whole World (that matters)
BabamphFeb 6, 2011
They said Western world because they didnt want to hurt our feelings. Who is the fattest amongst Canada, U.S, and South America....yeah exactly
breadfredFeb 6, 2011
I don't know. you tell me.

I really hope you realize the western world is not the same as the western hemisphere.

USA may not be the fattest in the world.
http://www.forbes.com/2007/02/07/worlds-fattest-countries-forbeslife-cx_ls_0208worldfat_2.html
1. Nauru 94.5
2. Micronesia, Federated States of 91.1
3. Cook Islands 90.9
4. Tonga 90.8
5. Niue 81.7
6. Samoa 80.4
7. Palau 78.4
8. Kuwait 74.2
9. United States 74.1
breadfredFeb 6, 2011
I have just checked all those countries. The only one with a population over 100,000 is Kuwait with a population of 2,789,132.
So, of all the countries with a population over lets say 10,000,000 (which would be a reasonable size of any demographic), the USA is the fattest.
The countries in the list provided are usually quite small - some extremely small. And they are islands.
Maybe there is something to do with islands populations that makes them fatter then average - but the same cannot be said for the States.
pinkfish411Feb 6, 2011
With the islands, it's usually that their bodies are particularly susceptible to feeling the effects of diets high in processed foods, and diets high in processed foods have caught on big-time. The same goes for Hawaii here in the U.S.; the native Hawaiians have serious obesity problems, partly because they suck down SPAM like its nobody's business.
themachine1Feb 6, 2011
Wheres Guam on that list it nearly tipped over last year?
pinkfish411Feb 6, 2011
It's part of the U.S.
bdbrFeb 6, 2011
Because small Pacific island nations are higher. The US is highest for the wealthier nations.

And this was news now how? I dunno, but there are a lot of fatties in europe too, especially in places like UK. Also Finland, where I'm from, has plenty of overweight or slightly above their ideal weight people.
norman619Feb 6, 2011
And the news for Europeans is than they are quickly catching up to the US. They love to talk s**t about the US and Americans in general and ignore their own problems as if their s**t doesn't stink. It's hilarious.
samoutFeb 6, 2011
I agree, as a Scandinavian... We talk a lot of s**t about the US and it's not a "myth". Finland is a healthy and nice place to live, but our politicians right now are total f**kwads and the legal system is horrible... We're taking a ton of refugees here and paying them thousands of dollars for their plane tickets and stuff, yet the people that are stuck in Egypt right now and need evacuating back to the country are being asked to pay over 400 euros!
And just recently, a guy that called his ex a "fatso" on Facebook got fines worth of 3000 euros and 6 months of probation. But a teacher that touched little kids got a 200 euro fine and nothing more. WTF, I say.
norman619Feb 6, 2011
Where are the refugees from and why is your country taking so many of them in? Were they asked to?
Some guy got fined thousands and 6 months probation over something he said on Facebook? Seriously?
samoutFeb 6, 2011
Yep... About 600 hundred refugees, I think from Egypt and arab countries. Finnish people are PISSED. Especially when the finns have pay to get evacuated from Egypt. Thanks Tarja Halonen aka Conan O'Brien! There was even an article in an Egyptian news paper that touted "Finland is a dream country for refugees and other people! They give free money and have beautiful women! Go there now! No racism".
No racism my ass. It was declared highly illegal to talk smack about foreigners on the internet recently, and they censor finnish people stating their opinions on the whole situation. If gypsies or muslims do something violent and/or rape a woman here (which happens like once a month), it's never stated in a news story unless the police are actively searching for the person, but if a finnish guy does something to a foreigner in self-defense it's all "racist attack! omg! front page story!".
It's getting worse and worse because of crap like this, luckily there's an election in April.
I'm so pissed you can't even comprehend.
samoutFeb 6, 2011
So, in short: Finland is completely pussy-whipped, has no balls and is scared of muslims especially.
I've seen so many foreign beggars here (there were *none* two years ago) you almost trip on them. And violence and rape has increased. People are asking for the politicians to make it illegal to beg on the streets. I am not that racist really (everyone likes their own country and the people!), but if I was in a country that gave me tons of money and free stuff and no flack for anything etc. I'd totally understand if people like to take advantage of that. It's f**king ridiculous and unfair.
norman619Feb 6, 2011
Wow... That's is so messed up. Why aren't the refugees being sent to near by countries instead?
And it's not racist to not want your country turned into the dumping ground. Too bad you have no freedom of speech there and your politicians don't have the balls to do what they should. Hopefully your people will decide to change all that by exercising their power to vote people willing to do what's right and what's needed into office. With all the issues we have here in the US I'd still prefer living here than in countries where life is easy bit simply speaking your mind is potentially illegal.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
samoutFeb 6, 2011
Sorry for the wall of text, but I want this s**t of my chest and make my stand known:
The reason they aren't is because Sweden etc. have recently stopped doing it because it's getting too full and racist attacks (neonazis) have increased. They (and other neighboring countries) have learned to say "NO" already before it gets too bad.
"Dumping ground" is exactly the word I'd use about how I feel about Finland right now.
I have no problem with most foreigners I know (those who know the rules of this place and really want to become accepted as a citizen here), but the "new batch of people" that have come here just recently and do not speak a word of finnish are completely taking over the streets. Even my mother who just came to my house for a visit said she sees more confused & tourist-looking arabs doing shady stuff in street corners than regular finnish people now. And there's really been an increase in violence and almost everyone of my female friends have been tried to rape once. And the beggars; young women with golden rings on their hands shaking cups with coins in them, everywhere. Not before 2009. If they only knew how stupid it looks in a country like Finland - all you need to do is go to social services and say "hello I'm a Muslim and would like to purchase a BMW and get my 18 family members (yes one of the 600 refugees apparently had that many!) to this country."
Finland has a lot of free speech (it's not a police country, there are no homeless people and it's generally a good place to live etc., it's just so damn ass-backwards sometimes!), but racism is a big no-no because our president loves exotic foreigners (she always flirts with dark men and says "it enriches our country!"). Recently she talked on TV about how "all racism must be stopped in this country". That's nice and all, but the only serious racism I or my friends have personally encountered is racism from Albanians, Iranians etc... They even have an insult/cuss word for us finns. I've never been robbed by a finnish person. Funny. It's like the N-word debacle in reverse. No talk about that word being declared illegal. It's really is a serious criminal offence now to talk about anything negative about other than finns.
I'd say almost 9 out 10 finns are pretty xenophobic. Big bald steroid-vikings that drink beer and listen to metal do not go well with Albanians, let me tell ya! And the media lies about it ("There's no racism here, please don't bomb us like the other countries!"). That's one of my biggest concerns. The muslims they are taking here right now by the truckloads are gonna be like, "What the hell? This place is just as xenophobic/racist as Denmark?! They lied to us!"
perogi21Feb 6, 2011
wow who knew there were still gypsies running around.
woollymittensFeb 6, 2011
Your arguments have nothing to do with the obesity problems. Why are you deflecting the discussion to your political gripes?
samoutFeb 7, 2011
I got caught up in norman619's comment... And was really pissed off at the moment.
This just in: About an hour ago a muslim shot a guy to death in a major city in Finland, there's the local "SWAT" on the scene right now. Apparently the man has a comprehensive criminal history. People are commenting on the story saying "what the f**k is he still doing living in here if he has a comprehensive criminal record?"
And last week, a house was burned down in the same city with explosives. 3 people died. It was done by some jealous foreign Pizzeria-owner. The story was quickly edited so that there were no mention of the huge explosion people heard and it "may have been an accident". And for some reason (this is not common), the trial had been made non-public.
This was one the news just now too: Rape has increased by 150 in a year. 70% of the reports were made from a city called Uki. 85% of Somalians of Finland live in Uki.
I'm gonna stop this now, since this is totally stupid and unappropriate to even discuss here, but check out this video from Sweden. It's really shocking and disturbing. God, I thought Finland was bad. Different cultures just can't mix, if you don't make the rules clear and just take anyone and everyone here without a good background check:

That's what drinking coffee and spending 20 hours on the computer reading racist troll-posts on Iltalehti.net does to you. Sucks Digg doesn't have an edit button and shortened the edit-times.
I apologize... That wasn't at all me. I feel bad for raging like that, because over half of my friends are not even finnish and are originally from places like Kosovo, Turkey, Kenya, Iraq, Russia, Estonia, Sweden etc.. and from all religions (even the muslims I probably accidentally implied I dislike). They're all important to me.

AnotherSchmoeFeb 7, 2011
Yet it's in the ghettos and trailer parks that you'll see the highest percentage of fatties. It has less to do with being wealthy and more to do with gluttony and no self-control.
Thankfully I'm breaking out of it, I weighed 278 about 1.5 years ago but am down to 207 now and still dropping, feel so much better. People just need to stop stuffing their faces, you don't even have to exercise (I only do push-ups a couple of times a week, nothing else right now) and the fat is still melting off like butter. Heck I even eat the same crap that I used to, I just eat a lot *less* of it now. So really, people just need some self-control and as rude as it sounds "Keep your mouth shut!".
Stop drinking soda / beer and drink only regular water (except special occasions maybe), and cut your portions way down and I guarantee you will lose a ton of weight. It's hard to eat less for the first month or two but then your stomach will adjust and you won't be hungry all the time anymore. All these special food diets and diet pills are pipe dreams and only distract from the problem, which is over-indulgence. Instant gratification cannot be achieved in weight loss.
AnotherSchmoeFeb 7, 2011
Oh, and forgot to mention... Stay away from fast food joints! If you are going to be out and want to eat go to a real restaurant or bring a sandwich or some granola bars from home or something. Fast food is garbage.
In any case though, it took time to put on all that weight, expect it to take time to burn it off.
eyeowedubbyaayeFeb 7, 2011
Great job bud!
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
I use to weigh 190 now I am 165.... But my active lifestyle as an expat is the reason why I avoided obesity. actually I wasn't really obese growing up. This has more to do with if your parents cooked at home when you were growing up or just fed you fast food.
agmlauncherFeb 6, 2011
There should be something in the healthcare provision that links cost of the mandatory insurance premiums to your weight, either directly, or through discounts for being in a certain BMI range.
cme884Feb 6, 2011

I'm technically obese by that scale but everyone guesses I only weigh 160lb and I'm a 5'9 male
AND I don't have much muscle (don't work out except 20min bike rides to work)
crunchdiggFeb 6, 2011
for populations, it's fine. for a very few high weight low bodyfat it's no good.
There are a LOT of fatties repeating what you just said, ignoring the fact that they don't have a lot of muscle. Sorry, tubbies of the world, if you can't flex it, don't diss BMI.
From looking around at any public space, you can't seriously claim that the rise in BMI over the last 30 or 40 years has anything to do with adding muscle weight. The electric carts at the grocery store? not for the heavily muscled. The fact that women's dress sizes are now far larger for the same size? not muscle. being able to buy 128 oz flavored corn syrup water at the Quickie Mart? Not for building muscle. Every corner having a coffee shop selling $4 whipped cream and caramel laced drinks? Probably not for those in training. Far higher weight kids? Not a lot of muscle to be built at that age. Many many more indicators. We're a bunch of fat asses.
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
pretty true. in japan they called me obese based on the BMI the doctor had to recheck and measure my body fat percentage to realize its only 9% also though BMI works on populations i think
norman619Feb 6, 2011
BMI is total bulls**t. Any doctor will tell you that. According the the BMI I'm obese. I weigh more than what it claims I should for someone of my height. The reason being I work out a lot. I'm 5'7" only 10% body fat and weigh a little over 200. I'm nowhere near fat. BMI is pure bulls**t.
jmcsFeb 6, 2011
BMI is for people of average build. It can't be used with persons which have a high muscular weight, but it's good to measure a population.
AnotherSchmoeFeb 7, 2011
BMI gives a good 'ballpark figure' for most of us who don't work out/don't have a lot of muscle. That said, yeah, it is flawed in that it gives an improper diagnosis to a lot of people, and it should never be taken as gospel. Though you really only have to take one glance at someone without their shirt on to know whether they are "overweight" or not.
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
obesity is best measured by fat percentage in blood. Even a skinny person can be obese.
agmlauncherFeb 6, 2011
Fair enough, I go to the gym and my BMI is higher than average due to muscle and not fat.
So then it should be linked to bodyfat percentage.
Either way, fat people should pay more since they put a greater strain on the healthcare system, and it would encourage them to stop being so fat...
norman619Feb 6, 2011
Each person is different. Their personal doctors should be the ones making the call. Being fat isn't always an indicator of being unhealthy. It is a sign of being unhealthy but there are plenty of heavy(fat) people who are also healthy. Normal cholesterol and in great cardiovascular shape. And by fat I'm not taking about the morbidly obese person you see who can't walk more than a few steps w/o getting winded. I'm talking about the more common person who is 10 to 15 pounds overweight.
Closed AccountFeb 7, 2011
I think what you are trying to say is...every person should pay for their OWN healthcare!
(P.S. to Digg staff members...By the time I finished typing the above senence, it had only typed out up to "say" and took several seconds to finish what I had typed. At least 15 more seconds. It has been almost 5 1/2 months now...time to REALLY fix Digg. This is very likely a reason why so many people have stopped commenting.)

kuzotzFeb 7, 2011

bdbrFeb 6, 2011
I agree. Those of us who eat right and exercise regularly shouldn't be penalized for others' bad habits. It would encourage good habits.
Exemptions for muscular people are easy enough, since most overweight people aren't bodybuilders (the US military has been doing this many years).
norman619Feb 6, 2011

As others have said, while BMI isn't a good determiner, there are similar programs in place.
I used to work for a health system, and you could go in yearly (optionally) and get a physical. They checked height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and probably a few other things I can't remember. Also asked about lifestyle such as smoking, how much you exercise, etc.
Factored it all together and it was possible to get discounts if you were "healthier". I don't claim to know the cutoffs but it significantly reduced my payments at the time.
ashleyashy2013Feb 6, 2011

ashleyashy2013Feb 7, 2011
well yeah but I wasnt saying that we arent to blame for being fat, I'm just stating you shouldnt charge more based on BMI
infidlFeb 7, 2011
Woolly is right on target. In my experience as a fat kid and a slim adult, 90% of being fat is caused by stuffing one's face. Everyone can "help being fat". It's just physics. Calories in - calories not used = fat. But people gorge themselves anyway ... triple-extra-carmel-whipped-cream-and-lard drinks from Starbucks, yet it's "just a coffee" they say as they waddle out the door. 100% candy it is. Then chips and pizza and soda &etc &etc ... and then people whine "I don't have tiiiime to work out". Fine, working out is icing on the cake so to speak. Start counting calories and fat consumed, it's very simple math, but feel free to use a calculator.
Also, since HS I've been a big walker. Walking is not strenuous, is relaxing, you can put on your tunes and just spend an hour or so in your own head and get fresh air in the process. You don't need a gym membership, you don't need special clothes. Pretty much all excuses are null and void unless you're crippled or maybe live in the 'hood.
But mostly, stop stuffing your face. Really.
ashleyashy2013Feb 7, 2011
really? cuz my friend is fat and hes one of the healthiest eaters I know
infidlFeb 7, 2011
Yeah, really. It's not just about so-called "healthy" eating. It's quantity too. Look, how hard is it to really count calories and fat. It's right there on the labels. 200 calories, 2 servings, 400 calories. That's maybe 1/5 to 1/6 of the calories a normal (non-weightlifter/athlete) guy should get in a day. Ditto fat ...10g ... 2 servings ... = 20g. No one, no one, is going to get fat if they consume fewer calories than they use in the course of a day. Fat is energy, and energy doesn't come from thin air, it comes from what goes down your gullet.
ashleyashy2013Feb 7, 2011
hmmm okay but i guess the basic idea is that you could eat a normal amount and still gain more weight than someone with a faster metabolism.
fatbikezFeb 6, 2011
its true.. i have never seen so many drive threw windows before i moved to ohio!.. Ohio does not even have sidewalks!
norman619Feb 6, 2011
The number of drive through windows or fast food restaurants is not an indicator of how many fat people there are in the area. The fact is you can eat healthy at fast food places. I lived in Indiana for a while and know what you are talking about. It took some getting used o the lack of sidewalks outside of what they called their downtown area which was only a few blocks. It still saw lots of people out walking and running regardless.
fatbikezFeb 6, 2011
all i have to saw is spend a week in columbus and you will see. gyms are never full. the highschool track near me is always empty. the trails are over grown with grass. its really sad. i also stayed in Indianapolis for a while and true there are drive threw there as well but people are alot thinner. just my small observation
norman619Feb 6, 2011
The cost of a gym membership is insane. I'm not surprised most gyms there are empty. It's cheaper to just work out at home. Especially in this economic climate.
breadfredFeb 6, 2011
You can work out anywhere - I do not have a work out regime, I just cycle to work and walk dogs 2 hours every day. I should really pick up something a bit more strenuous to do twice a week.
antialiasFeb 6, 2011
What is healthy that you would eat at a fast food place? If you put any dressing on their salads it certainly can't be called a healthy meal as even half the dressing packets they give is more calories than the burgers. If you get the grilled chicken sandwiches it's somewhat better but they still are glazed in sugar and all the buns they have, even the whole wheat options at some places are pretty terrible on the scale of nutritious bread. And pretty much any type of french fries are no good. Anything there is alright if you eat a small portion and only a couple of times a month at most. Even places like subway aren't really "healthy" food unless you are really careful about what you put on the sandwich and only eat a 6 inch.

laurahoustonFeb 6, 2011
Agree with the other posters who says, "The fact is you can eat healthy at fast food places". Got to admit though its hard to make healthy choices with fast food. And it becomes a habit to have fast foods a couple times a day for many people.
I went to the extreme and quit all fast foods like mcdonalds a couple years ago. Just a couple times a year I 'treat myself' to some fries and one of those tasty sandwiches or some tacobell! I also gaveup all soda, used to loveee my pepsi or coke.
I still think I eat to much and can do better..but you know what happened by stopping fast food lunch/breakfast and just stopping sugared soda? Over 2 years I lost 30lbs without even trying!!
now I am thinking about those tasty fastfood fries, lol! but I can slice and fry a large potato, make my own tasty fries and lose weight.
For those of you who love your fastfood, try it yourself..make a good breakfast taco or bacon and eggs, fix a good sandwich for lunch and have chips too, bake cake for dessert, drink water instead of soda...you will lose weight without even trying!
laurahoustonFeb 6, 2011
forgot to add ...I do own a horse and ride a couple times a week(casual slow)...I am sure my mare appreciates the 30lbs less aswell :)

If an overweight person would ONLY substitute regular "calorie" drinks with something non-caloric like water (and everything else staying the same), they'd lose a lot of weight in a year.
gwhenningFeb 6, 2011
As someone who drinks a lot of soda, I can tell you that doesn't work. I'm mildly overweight and about 3 years ago it was suggested that if I simply reduced my multiple 6 pack per week soda habit I should be able to lose the 10-15 lbs needed to put me back in the "normal" range.
I cut out soda entirely for two years substituting for water or non-sweetened tea. Didn't lose 1 single pound. You need to do more than simply cut out soda drinks. Once the fat is stored, the only way to rid yourself of it is to burn it off (i.e.- Exercise or throw your metabolism into a fat burning state.)

how about stop drinking pop period and finding out how much you will lose. trust me you lose a lot of that weight and give your kidneys a well deserved break!!!

I work in a call center as a data analyst. There are some very obese people there. They get in early so they can get a cooked breakfast in the company restaurant. They eat chocolate bars. And drink diet f**king coke.
They just don't get it. It makes me sick, as these girls are young and have a life ahead of them - and they are destroying their own life by living the way they do. And, it is NEVER their own fault.
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
I took up outdoor hobbies to stay in shape. being overweight while you are young is not good. I can be 60 yrs old and a lil fat. its a good thing it shows my age, but I am 22 now. I can't be fat. it isn't a good thing I haven't earned that luxury. yet

Most of this article is just the same old thing. The maps were interesting, since they showed the difference for men & women. I was surprised how it was so much higher for women. Europe is really strange - most countries are low for women, but high for men.
gkiltzFeb 7, 2011
There is less agreement as to what is normal weight for women.
Generally in the US, the most fashionable weight is 12-15 pounds below medically ideal weight. In most of the world, it is closer to 7 pounds. 5 pounds below medically ideal has approximately the same long term medical impact as 15 pounds above.

The strangest bit is that obesity in America is worse in the poor, for which food stamps and welfare provide an endless source of free garbage calories (potato chips, donuts, etc.).
I worked at a convenience store for years in college, and I was appalled at how much garbage food stamp abusers consume. I was making $5/hr and struggling to eat healthy foods, and people on food stamps would come in and buy the place up -- all the candy, ice cream, snack cakes, etc. -- but totally ignoring the fruit, canned vegetables and quasi-healthy foods we stocked. (Before the food stamp credit cards, they also used to send their 18 kids in with $1 food stamps each to buy ten-cent candies, then use the change returned to go across the street and buy alcohol and cigarettes, but that's another story.)
Americans think their welfare dollars are going toward buying healthy food for the poor. However, the poor typically don't have cars, and rely heavily on convenience stores in their neighborhoods. Convenience stores primarily stock junk food. The foolishness of the system is a priori obvious.
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
you're f**king preachy as hell. you got through college and was jealous of how ppl with food stamps wasted what they had.
fauozFeb 6, 2011
Think partially due to fact is junk food is always at your fingertips everywhere you go. This is happening worldwide too as i travel to Asia every year. They are getting fat too.
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
lol yea I am starting to see it in Japan and in China especially China!! These parents in China spoil their only child!!!!! its f**ked up man.. WEll except for ethnic minorities because they can have multiple children they typically don't spoil their kids as a result.

I love how the entire article relies on BMI. For those that don't know, that's a several hundred year old way of rating people. It has nothing to do with fat, obesity, or being unhealthy. It's just your height compared to your weight. That's all.
Hell I could reason that b/c the US has such a high average BMI, that we're the strongest country in the Western World.

When you have more people dying of too much to eat than of too little, you've won as a people.

I keep reading different stuff on this: In one article they were claiming Mexicans were the fattest. Then there was that crazy pic with the pasty fat as Hell brits on an overcast beach with a donkey.
Now back to this. How did they get that pic anyways? Sneaking up when they were too busy eating?
"Wow, what a pic of fat Americans! Gotta make a article to go along with it! Yeah..."

Control of eating habits is the main solution to Obese in the U.S. One suggestion; eat meals 2 1/2 to 3 hours in between, and not eat every 30 minutes as most U.S citizens do.

Lol, way to cover up the true fattest nation at the bottom of the article.
"AMERICANS ARE FAT AND LAZY!!!!11!!!!" says the fat brits.
ashleyashy2013Feb 6, 2011
well i think it has something to do with the fact that we associate "American Food" with hot dogs, apple pies, and twinkies <justsayin>
torisutanFeb 7, 2011
And yet the entire GOP and right-wing are going absolutely APE-s**t about Michele Obama suggesting we try to lose weight.
I have an idea: if you want, go ahead and eat all the unhealthy s**t you want. But when you need access to a hospital for a heart attack, people who didn't eat crap and exercised regularly will take priority over you. That way you're REALLY taking personal responsibility instead of indulging yourself and then relying on the rest of us to keep your fat ass alive.
oPEEPINGTOMoFeb 7, 2011
Unless you have medical problems that you cannot help being obese, it is sickening. The way that we eat, and that parents feed their kids is pathetic.

We also have the lowest hunger rate!
Relative to total income, we have the lowest overall food prices.
That's the balance that always has to be struck: Higher food prices and more hunger, or lower food prices and more obesity.
It all happens because, prior to the industrial revolution, man ALWAYS alternated between shortage and abundance of food. We actually evolved genetically to survive that. We gain weight easily when food is available but we can survive amazing things in times of shortage.
No amount of policy or legislation or economic theory will change a million or so years of evolution.
kuzotzFeb 7, 2011
ppl dont understand this it is an instinct to eat a lot because our brains were designed to enjoy food especially since most of our history it was unavailable in the way it is today.

More developed countries are supposed to have higher rate of literacy. The US has 25% population own at least a bachelor degree. However, they have 1,590,000 STDs in 2009 and an average BMI 28 (overweight) in 2008 (according to Imperial College London).
