good idea for the students who can grab the opportunity and succeed, bad idea for those who fail. really a gamble, better stay in school.

Doesn't entrepreneurship always have an element of gambling?

Every business has an element of risk.
but I would much rather have some kid who drops out of collage, creates his/her own business and succeeds, then have someone who goes the whole nine yards only to end up facing other collage students and current prospective employees in the employment sector, broke, jobless and in debt.
sometimes you just have to make your own way in life.
wasn't it some famous american inventor that said genius is 1 inspiration and 99 perspiration, funny thing is, that guy didn't start out as a college student with a degree, he started out as a telegrapher after being hired by one, and started making inventions pertaining to telegraphs.

Edison said that.

Interesting concept. I wonder how fast these 20 "giveaways" will be claimed?

A move that may change your life http://bit.ly/d2epAK Why Not? I will, but my parents won't!

If the idea is worth leaving college, then you most likely don't need $100,000 to do it. It would just be icing on the cake.
Considering the numbers regarding unemployment and college/high school dropouts, it might be a better idea to reward those people that stay in?

I think it is an excellent idea. I think the students should plan on going back to school at some point though.

What an incentive?

this guy just wants to patent these kids ideas

Universities have really started to become grown up day cares. I can't tell you how many BS books I had to read in college and courses empty of content just to get the credits necessary to graduate.
Anyone that takes this on with an inspired idea will win regardless of profits gained or lossed. You have to truely apply yourself to succeed in business, but not so much in college.

Jacob Weisberg at Slate is a moron. The country doesn't need any more entrepreneurs? What the hell is he thinking. We want as many as we can get our hands on. Entrepreneurs are a very rare bread. I seriously doubt that Thiel is just going to hand the money to anyone saying they have an idea. Those who get the money are going to have put a lot of time and thought into what they're going to do, and how they're going to do it. That $100,000 is a huge enabler for them. Besides, starting your own business looks a hell of a lot better on a resume than a liberal arts degree.

" Thiel's just trying to turn the tech startup "into a white boy's version of the NBA," diverting young people from the "love of knowledge" to the love of money."
NEWSFLASH: It was never for love of knowledge to begin with. It was always love of money. Shocking.
laid1910Oct 19, 2010
i don't think that is a good idea, they are young so they have perhaps very good idea but they don't have experience for to do in action with all problems who are coming of their realisations
jacquelynekOct 20, 2010
i love how the general mindset is at only young people can come up with new ideas or be entrepreneurs. /s
