Do the math baby, do the math. Divide hourly and the pay may indeed, suck.

But, it's so cool to be your own boss ... for sure

I've been self-employed for 14 years, and I'd never choose being employed over being self-employed.

Only the strong survive. You have to be able to operate in the good times and the bad. People think that you're safe in the corporate world, and that is so far from the truth.

After 25 years of working for someone else, (10 of those for a big fortune 100 insurance company) I have quit and started my own business. Best thing I have ever done. I am making just as much money (soon to be more) and working fewer hours. I have more freedom and can spend time with my family. I leave work at work, I am not on call and I don't work overtime. I wish I had done this a long time ago.
Here's the thing... you have to have a talent for it, a natural talent. It is like being a musician or athlete, if you have no natural talent you probably are not going to make it. You won't know until you try though so I would recommend that everyone try entrepreneurship at some point in their lives.
I don't agree with the article on the point of keeping your job and starting a business. Getting a business going requires a lot of attention. I never would have made it work while working another full time job.

Use your time for your own benefits. One role to achieve success.
