When done right, the pay-off can be enormous... Old Spice is the perfect example of this.
fantasticplanet264May 19, 2011
Totally. I am in a social media networking class and basically learning how to put myself out there as a filmmaker. Social Media is free and can be a powerful tool. I thought before Twitter was a joke, but now I can't live without it since everything and everyone is so connected. What other Social Media networks are you a part of?

Humorous commercials are now classified as social media?
crosstvMay 19, 2011
No... but Old Spice's commercials based on requests from youtube and facebook users and then published on those platforms are classified as social media. Maybe this helps http://tinyurl.com/64nch7y

I rarely see social media articles that include the influence/interplay of traditional media. It would be good for people to recognize that. In the case of Old Spice, they used TV, magazines, and social media. There is always going to be some interplay. For example, did the TV commercials "bootstrap" the social media aspects? If so, are those costs of that factored in? Most of the articles about the Old Spice campaign make no mention of TV or any other medium.

they LOST money on that campaign
bukowskyMay 19, 2011
Actually... no they didn't. Their sales increased 107% in the first month after the social media campaign from the summer of 2010.

Is it too late to stare building mobile apps? I want a piece of the 20k
fantasticplanet264May 19, 2011
it is never too late to build mobile apps. Now days it is all about the creativity and user friendly-ness of the app. Of course making it relevant enough for people to use in their everyday lives.

It is just stupid to try to generalize the cost for all businesses when it is so varied depending on the business. No...not all will need to hire someone for $1000 a week to do it. Nor another guy for $1800 a week. For many small businesses, those two salaries would be more than the rest of their regular payroll combined.
And the benefits are ridiculous as well. The whole correlation/causation thing. The average Facebook fan spends $70 more on the brand than a non-Facebook fan? That in NO way means that getting someone to be a fan means they will spend more. It means that people who enjoy your products a lot more and buy more, are more likely to follow you on Facebook. I would be willing to bet that the average person who becomes a fan of a product spends virtually ZERO more after following the company on FB than they did before. Certainly not even close to $70.

With social media, while also more effective, cost-effective when compared to other means.

Social media is most powerful method in SEO......
socialmonkeyMay 21, 2011
Social media may be a very powerful tool and very cheap at that, but does it really cost and provide a ROI (Return On Investment). I found a really interesting article that looks deep into the depths of Social Media Marketing. Hope you all find it usefull.

I love how the graph put the average amount spent by fans vs non-fans. Surely that could not have anything to do with the fact that people who "fan" a company are the same people that would be more likely to buy from said company anyway! No, it must be the social media attracting sales from the ether.
