Everyone should be at least thankful if not for gift itself then the token of appreciation.

Agreed. It is important to keep in mind that the gift giver went to both the mental and physical trouble of trying to make you happy.
HOWEVER, I think that the dissatisfaction most likely stems from the simple fact of human nature: that people like to control their environs and get to affect the conclusion.

It's not really a token of appreciation if the people around you expect a gift from you (while claiming with false humility that they don't), and then you feel like you have to give them one or else they'll get offended and not speak to you again or something. At the very least it would be awkward not to give gifts.

You're right. And I like the username. It would be awkward, but why would you be in a position of not wanting to buy gifts for those who "expect" them from you? Do you not like them?

Economists will say "It waste money"

Economists. Those that can't predict.

I think it's crazy because people try to spend the same amount on each other. When you're an adult with your own money, why not buy yourself what you want and/or give some to a charity. Myself and most of my friends and family can get the basic necessities themselves. I would love if my family would just do some charity work and spend time together at the holidays rather than stressing about gifts.

There leaving out one incredibly important thing that makes this fairly irrelevant. People on the stock exchange aren't trading to get the candy they want, or to meet a need. The major players are simply trading to accumulate large amounts of money. In the classroom there is an even trade, the stock-market is sophisticated robbery

An excellent lesson in basic economics! Well written, and fun to read.

But gift giving is a great way to stimulate the economy. Products are purchased that never otherwise would have been.
