All this fuss about who is to blame instead of what to do about it. :/
JonathonFishenatorJun 5, 2011
You didnt hear? Its an election year, time for political games to promote your own party, not actual effort that could take time away from coming up with ideas to fix our economy. f**k the republican house hasnt tried passing a SINGLE job bill since taking office.

Perfect example of what the poster above you is complaining about.
Explain to me how the government can legislate non-taxpayer paid jobs into existence?
"I passed a jobs bill!!!" Whoopdedoo....Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
JonathonFishenatorJun 5, 2011
It's called infrastructure and small business reform. Defend the house all you want, but, it seems to me (and the majority of America with their 30% approval ratings) that their job recently is to complain about Obama being the reason they cant do their REAL job, representing and helping Americans.

Explain to me how you can legislate non taxpayer paid jobs into existence?
JonathonFishenatorJun 5, 2011
... go read the history of the great depression and get back to us when you're not a layman on the subject of infrastructure and recession ending.
Closed AccountJun 5, 2011
In other words, you don't have a clue.
Many believe the great depression was ended by WWII.
You advocating for a world war or something?
xophermvJun 5, 2011
And what exactly changed during WW2 which caused the end of the Great Depression? The government put everyone to work through massive stimulus in gearing up and conducting war. We could do the same: put everyone to work through massive stimulus, except this time through repairing our infrastructure which badly needs attention.
JonathonFishenatorJun 5, 2011
Oh, Xo that'd be against her mantra. So what if history or those liberally biased facts prove her wrong.
bdbrJun 5, 2011
If the unemployment is due to low capacity driven by lack of demand, the government can inject money to stimulate demand, which should drive the need for capacity & jobs.
If the unemployment is structural and there is high capacity elsewhere (i.e. now), the government-injected money will just go where the capacity already exists (overseas).
We should be envious of 1929 - they had low public debt, low private debt, a younger workforce, little demand for skilled labor, and inefficient global shipping & communications. Our situation is very different and it deserves a lot of explaining why anyone thinks the same solutions will work.
rattelerJun 5, 2011
Bush already waisted the War incentive and used it up to give "retention bonuses" to the business that should have been destroyed because they tanked the economy.
Now we have to reclaim that money that was stolen from the criminals who stole it, and yes... redistribute BACK to the people who it should have gone to to create jobs in the first place.
70% of our economy is based on consumer spending, which supports economy of scale, which makes an industrialized economy possible.
Ruin the consumer base for the richest 2% and that 2% end up spending way more... on much fewer items, all customized for them.
Economy of scale collapses and the population that cannot afford custom one offs of everything revolts.
The richest 2% dies horrible at the hands of as many other 98% as their custom 1 off army can take with them.
All because you didn't pave the roads, build the bridges and put up a few windmills.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
starmanjonesJun 5, 2011
it may not be the best solution. but government could be an employer.
drmangrumJun 6, 2011
Xophermv, you have a poor understanding of history. The US did well after WW2 because the US was one of the few industrialized nation that wasn't blown to hell and back. Most of Europe was picking up the pieces. Whom do you think was buying the goods from American factories? It wasn't until the 60's that most of Europe and Japan were able to produce at any sort of capacity. By that time America held dominance over the rest of the world.
Government doesn't create jobs. Businesses create jobs. All government has to do is foster a business-friendly economic environment and stay vigilant to ensure everyone is playing fair.
kasha34Jun 6, 2011
Oh God. Do you still think it was the New Deal and govt paid jobs that ended the Great Depression?
kasha34Jun 6, 2011
@xophermv
What changed during WWII? The world was destroyed, that's what changed. All except for the United States.
After WWII, almost all the factories in the world were destroyed, except here. Of COURSE we had a boom for a few years.
JonathonFishenatorJun 5, 2011
They'd be wrong, it was the cap on a already successfully done legislature designed to decrease unemployment, and it worked. Don't claim someone is ignorant of job creation when you obviously have no clue how important small business and infrastructure is to jobs.

Simple question - simple answer:
Laws that force them to do a job:
Food industry - more QA and food analyzing for instance. They either show they test their whole food chain weekly or they lose their right to sell stuff.
Housing - force them to keep the housing at a specific minimum standard (higher is of course allowed) - instead of being allowed to rent out ruins. Either keep their property in shape or lose it.
See, it IS that simple.

When you export jobs, they don't come back.
cantstopwontstopJun 5, 2011
oh they'll come back, when americans are soo poor that the cost of things they make will be cheaper than that of the asia's. then and only then will some come back. meanwhile, we're importing more immigrants every year than the amount of jobs we create. immigration is just outsourcing on our own soil.
when obama talks about america needing to be competitive, he means we need to be cheap to compete. quantity over quality. the problem is, $50 might buy a months worth of food in a 'poor' country, but that same $50 won't buy jack s**t in the USA. if inflation wasn't soo bad, we wouldn't have a problem. reducing buying power and raising prices spells disaster.
touchy610Jun 6, 2011
If one works the right way about it, 50 bucks can buy a whole lot. I'd know; I had to live on very little per month not too long ago.

diggduggjoeJun 5, 2011
They will come back when we get our financial house in order. Sorry but people cannot spend 3 bucks for every dollar they put into Medicare. The wars have to stop. Other cost cutting will help.
One thing that could help is to s**t can the corporate tax. The corporate tax is paid by consumers plain and simple, unless of course some lobbyist finds a better deal for a particular company. That corporate tax is paid by us AND our potential customers overseas.
david85282Jun 5, 2011
5. The internet created a cheap, global workforce.
6. Computers and robots work even cheaper.
bdbrJun 5, 2011
It's ridiculous to think the Fed's quantitative easing would improve employment in today's environment. It just throws money into the system and inflates the currency. It's a boon for the wealthy because that money shifts into assets, and they can shift their assets overseas where excess capacity sits ready and waiting for increased demand from stimulus.
Corporate profits go up, stock prices go up, and commodity prices go way up, but for the average American all they see is the price of goods go up while their paychecks stagnate (and even if their paychecks rise, it only allows them to buy the same amount). Inflation isn't real growth.

The one passed by Obama and the Democratic Congress in 2009 that was targeted for his campaign donors.

melthornalJun 5, 2011
Well, you have the uneducated American people who do not understand and actively refuse to educate themselves about 'variable rate mortgages.'
The banks who gave loans they knew would fail.
The investment bankers who labeled and traded these subprime loans as if they were AAA assets.
The banks on the receiving end of these trades and ultimately bought subprime loans, without doing the proper investigative work.
The government agencies that deregulated the system and allowed for these sorts of swaps to be legal.
The American people who, after all this information came to public knowledge, continue to support deregulation by way of electing congressmen who are continuing this trend.
I would say it is everyones fault. All of the American people, all of the banks, all of the investment banks, all of the foreign banks, and all of the foreign people for allowing their banks to do this behavior. It is EVERYONES fault. Look in the mirror, it is your fault. Look at people outside. It is their fault. Turn on the TV, every face you see. Yup, their fault, too. Everyone is at fault.
Now, what are you doing to fix it?

The attack the President crap is such a time waster. Regular americans looking for work need something now!! to generate their own 'work' .
1) The local barriers against self-employment must be removed, suggest the President mandate removing all zoning laws that restrict self-employment. No license fees for self-employed.
2)Small family run businesses (under about 150k) can't compete with megastores- suggest tax free for the first ~150k income of a small business...income and state tax free. low employee taxes for first 3-4 fulltime employees.
3) must be kept on the low income level, low meaning less than 150k-200k...once a small business is earning 150k a year they can start paying their fair share of taxes and local license fees.
4) all morgage payments and gov loans both in and payments out- for 6 months...no interest charges, the payments continue and pay straight towards principal.
and/or the gov declaires bankrupt on selective loans and closes that part of the gov.
5) all open 'jobs' pull from the pool of unemployed (on unemployment)local to them. on the job training for example- a useless skill like 'travel agent' learns how to be a medical assistant.
6) open easement land both local and federal to small business farming. There is a ton of open land owned by Entex and other corporations, that sits fallow
7)drop the drug war except for border security and legal marijuana...all those billions saved, all the underground jobs into the taxpayer light. and the NEW tourist industry born.
aaa- what I would do to create a million jobs and save billions, and bring in revenue fast. just dreaming, answering the article without casting blame!.

Many democratic policies enacted by under Clinton's democratic congress were the catalyst to today's economic woes. Jobs are scarce because fewer and fewer products are being made in the United States. Fewer products are made in the United States because they can be made for slave wages in other nations and purchased for dirt cheap back in the United States. Setting larger import terifs could help undo this, by letting locally made products compete with cheap imported products. The nation has to decide what it wants, dirt cheap Chinese blue jeans, or jobs to pay for food and shelter.

There are jobs out there! You must be a person that wants the job and will do the job. Before the Golden voice was discovered and splattered all over the media, I took a cardboard sign to the corner of Wal-mart in TorC NM. At the very spot where the bums ( same bums ) camp and beg for money. My sign read "Able bodied 40 and fit, needs a job, NO HANDOUTS"! I had a job that day tileing. Thinking that way will do well because most of the people in positions already, feel overworked, underpaid, and feel it may be a decade before they get any recognition. As it stands right now there is no way in hell to fix this without lies, theft, war, and then it's just something to buy more time. Sweep a road, dig a ditch, clean a restroom......yes it is in your job description. Pull the frikkin pants up, maybe cut your hair. Most of all, suck it up and pick a job and do it with a smile.

Its basic economics vs complex regulated(dictated economy)
A)the u.s. government created the federal income tax
B)the u.s. government gave the ability to private banks to print endless amounts of currency (not backed by silver and gold)
C)that currency is then divided to provide inflated credit (money that doesnt exist),just a value on paper
D)the government borrows (steals) taxes to pay for endless warfare, weaponry, and lettuce pickers
E)the debts incurred are not repayable, therefore the government "defaults" (doesnt pay the money back)
F)The currency then gets inflated more so that special interest businesses can boom their stock and trade it off before the market crashes..or is aware of it.
G)tax payers get hit with inflation and devalued currency
H)small local business have to crawl through a battlefield of tax codes to maintain business and to hire new employees ,
I)there are alot of federal regulations on trade and business
J)jobs are lost because of the regulations driving up cost and slowing down production
K)private citizens are forced to pay more than half their yearly income in taxes,..which ultimately means they cannot buy that nice skateboard for little jimmy,or that brand new scooter for jamie at the local toy store
L)jobs lost because citizens have little money to spend (other than on bills)
M)the other half of yearly income ,citizens are paying bills with.
N)property taxes ....also illegal. You basically lease your "property" from the government.
I can go on and on and on. The u.s. government is the cause of job loss
and creating more government jobs, more retarded molestation squads aka TSA...all of that job hiring the federal government does adds to national debt and job loss.

We have taken low unemployment and perpetual economic growth for granted as an inevitability of time. The majority of human history and the current status quo of most of the world belies this assumption.
Low unemployment and perpetual economic growth require a very specific - and very rare - set of conditions. Economic opportunity has to be combined with legal and regulatory stability.
My point is, if the United States alters these fragile conditions which have lead to low unemployment and steady growth we may never get them back.
