Subway took your kitchen and brought it to the high street. For most of us, slicing up bread and slapping whatever we can find in the fridge for it is normal. I think part of that appeal is what subway brings. Subway 4 life dawg.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
amsrayMar 25, 2011
Subway helped to save Chuck from cancellation, that makes me feel positive about them. Five dollar foot-long sandwiches seals the deal.
canyoucountMar 25, 2011
And you know how much Big Mike loves his Subway...
adinitamaMar 25, 2011
woooooowwwwwww.
chrisvazquez1Mar 25, 2011
Are U.S. food standards that low? Is that why Americans like foreign foods so much? I mean Subway is okay, but have any of you gone to a GOOD sub shop?
norman619Mar 25, 2011
So you take this to mean no one is eating anywhere else? Please tell me you aren't THAT stupid. Among people who use social media Subway is most loved. Get some perspective. Social media users do not represent the majority of the US.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
chrisvazquez1Mar 25, 2011
Must you insult everyone when you reply to them? Something tells me you're projecting. Also, although social media doesn't represent the majority of the U.S, social media users are still Americans. You're making the fallacy that just because social media users are a minority, that they have completely different tastes than the populace.
Do us all a favor Norman, and stop being such a f**king dick.
JustSayNoPartyMar 25, 2011
He does seem to be taking an 'everyone is dumber than me' approach lately.
3the3dude3Mar 26, 2011
"Are U.S. food standards that low?"
With all due respect, is that not a blanket insult of America's collective standards? I don't know why you wouldn't expect someone to insult you, in return.
P.S. Social Media does not equal "Americans".
chrisvazquez1Mar 27, 2011
Is it still an insult when you're telling the truth? Okay, okay, I'm generalizing. You're right. It's just that I'm Mexican American, I travel very often, and U.S. food just tastes bland to me compared to that of other countries. I'm American and I know this.
I do like me a good ribeye steak, french fries, and cheese toast though. Or a good juicy cheeseburger. Would I usually buy those at a restaurant instead of make it myself? Unlikely.
mstrdiggMar 26, 2011
"Are U.S. food standards that low? Is that why Americans like foreign foods so much?"
Can't blame him on getting defensive, you sound like you were ragging on the average US consumer, there.
Subway is horrible. Here in NY (upstate, not the city!) there are about a million pizza/wing/sub shops on every corner and a good 50% of them are just.. excellent!
Subway is quick, and cheap. Unfortunately they aren't a value or in any way..good. And yea, cheap does not equal value. I'd rather spend 2 dollars more and actually eat something enjoyable. Their bread is disgusting.
chrisvazquez1Mar 27, 2011
Hmmm, I'd actually REALLY, REALLY like to visit New York some day. Are food prices that high though? I thought that generally, mom and pop restaurants were cheaper (with pizza being an exception). I'd really like to try Eastern American food. I just went to Chicago for the first time a couple months ago and the Italian (let's not kid ourselves Italian-American) food was amazing.
Here in Southern California, there's a city called Bellflower. There's a little m&p sub shop called Pizza USA. Is the name generic? Hell yeah, but the shop has been there for 21 years+. They've kept their prices at pre-inflation levels. A sub and medium soda or bag of chips is $3.85. A slice of pizza with a medium soda is $1.85. Oh and that's with taxes included. Their subs are the best subs that I have ever tried. I often travel an hour just to go there. I'm not going to lie, there are some golden jewels out there. Just very rare.
ricksiteMar 25, 2011
Did you even read the article? The survey was for fast food chains. We have many "GOOD" sub shops but they were not included in the survey.
scarredupMar 25, 2011
That's because chains by their nature can't make good food. They have to try to appeal to too many people making their food bland.
3the3dude3Mar 26, 2011
Chipotle, Baja Fresh, Chic-fil-a...
chrisvazquez1Mar 26, 2011
Chipotle is a complete farce of a "Mexican" fast food restaurant, Baja Fresh even worse, I'll concede on the Chic-Fil-A though.
writenowrongMar 27, 2011
Sounds like someone uses Chipotle-away
adml_shakeMar 25, 2011
I wish we had an acutal sub shop in the city I live in. Sadly we don't. Subway is ok when I want something quick and kinda cheap, Jimmy Johns being the better option, but those are kinda rare too.
3the3dude3Mar 26, 2011
The only truly good franchise sandwich I've ever eaten is Jersey Mike's.
mstrdiggMar 26, 2011
Oh hell yea.. <3 Mikes
DaBellas is great too. There are a few around here, not sure if they are regional or what, though.
scarredupMar 25, 2011
pretty much.

Yawnnnnn...yes...we have been to better sub shops . But guess what? The local sub shop was not part of the survey. So it couldn't win.

addiktionMar 26, 2011
@chrisvazquez1
Good places like you speak of don't tend to be large food chains like Subway and are typically restaurants. I've ate amazing Italian from an authentic Italian restaurant but trying to scale that for a nation would be extremely difficult. However for $5 I find subway hard to beat in terms of the health compared to other fast-food places and the fulfillment value you get out of it.
justjohn025Mar 26, 2011
Hell yes. It's called Firehouse Subs!
omeezy4sheezyMar 26, 2011
That wasn't what the survey was conducting as it was ranking people's favourite fast-food chain, but I totally agree. A mom and pop deli shop is almost always better for you in every way
karmashockMar 26, 2011
It's just a stupid survey. By age 10 all Americans should learn to take them with a large pinch of salt.
mrteflonMar 26, 2011
They do not need the Salt ... It is already loaded in the fast food. No pinch required.

writenowrongMar 27, 2011
Check out the nutritional info for the any standard sub sandwich they have at Quiznos...they're a lot worse for you than Subway. The reason why Subway is doing so well is because a good number of their subs are marketed as being healthier than typical fast food. Is it? Hell no, you're better off making your own damn sandwich. But in comparison to the majority of fast food places, it has decent nutritional value, and is relatively affordable.

JustSayNoPartyMar 25, 2011
Well, when your at work thinking of something that you can eat that is Healthy and Cheap, Subway is about the only place. And 'fast food' healthy place that has opened around me 'closes' fairly quickly.

Most people who get a sub at Subway do not get one of the healthy ones, and since most put mayonaisse on it, even the potentially healthy ones go right out the window.

There are literally nine Subways on my route to work, four of them within a five-mile radius of my office.
Just for fun I tried all four locations and now make a conscious choice to bypass the two nearest shops because I prefer the service at the third. The employees are friendly, competent and remember me despite the fact that it's often weeks or even months between visits.
I'm more than willing to go out of my way if it means I can give my money to people who make an extra effort at their job.

this is probably true because you can make it as healthy or unhealthy as you want - sheer brilliance. i consider myself a pretty healthy eater but i still stop into subway from time to time. apart from the sodium it makes a pretty healthy, well rounded lunch or dinner if you choose the right ingredients.
dionysianslumberMar 25, 2011
Subway is a bun soaked in grease with added gone-off salad and meat that's not fit for even animal consumption.

I don't think they are awesome, but they are better than most fast food options IMO.
ocelot13Mar 26, 2011
ignorant consumer.
i work at subway (also in college, gotta pay rent some how)
and grease soaked bun? are you serious?
the rolls come as frozen dough... you let them defrost, spray them with water (then roll in topping if it has one) then put it in a bread form and score. proof then bake and its done. no different than how a bakery makes bread (aside from dough not being made fresh)
dionysianslumberMar 26, 2011
That's my experience. They taste rotten compared with proper handmade sandwiches. I'm not ignorant, I've had many a sandwich and Subway is the worst of the worst. The toppings are cheap and nasty. johnomazzMar 25, 2011
I love Subway. They get slammed by Togos and Quiznos for not giving enough meat and what not, but frankly, those other places do the same thing with skimpy meat quantities. Subway is MUCH cheaper too.
Sure, Quiznos may have different subs and maybe is a bit fancier, but for a quick sub for lunch, its Subway all the way.

digitaldeadstarMar 25, 2011
I enjoy Subway. It is a bit healthier than most other fast food places, and it's cheap and usually pretty quick. If I'm out and about and want a bite to eat, it's a nice option. If you go there expecting some sort of high end sandwich, or an incredibly healthy meal, you're probably doing it wrong.

can't stand subway, i don't want cucumbers and olives on a sub they try to pile a salad on top to disguise the fact they don't give you much meat and cheese, all filler, if i want a salad i'll get a salad dammit. last time i was there got the tuna sub, it had so much mayo in the tuna it all squirted out when i bit into it and it was gross, never been back.

do you people that eat there know what it is made of? You should also work there to see what is behind the scenes. most of the meat is made of turkey and flavored with whatever you are wanting it to taste like. Everything is frozen except the bread and the bread at the end of the day us usually thrown out...dumped in the garbage. People that need that bread are not even allowed to have it...dump...except for the white and wheat bread that is...the other stuff is dumped.
All the meats are frozen and thawed out....nummers
ocelot13Mar 26, 2011
only frozen meats are chicken, steak, meatballs, and roast beef.
the lunch meats dont come frozen. the veggies all come fresh (lettuce and spinach come in bags, and the brine veggies arent fresh, impossible to have fresh brined veggies) the rest are cleaned and prepped.
as for bread its very rare we throw bread out, managers are suppose to bake bread based on what is expected to sell so they dont end up with left over bread. we normally have around 20-30 pieces left at night which is used the next morning while bread is being baked.
