From the article:
---
The silver lining is that the HPV-related head and neck cancers are eminently more treatable than those attributable to smoking or drinking, even though they tend to be diagnosed at a later stage.
"(HPV-related head-and-neck cancers) have been a lot easier to treat. You can use less-intensive radiation," said Dr. D.J. Verret, clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and a facial plastic surgeon in Plano, Texas.
About 85% of non-smoking people with HPV-positive tumors survive. That number drops to 45 or 50% in people who smoke and are HPV-negative, Lydiatt said.
And tongue and tonsil cancers remain relatively rare in the United States. The other good news at least for the younger set is that there is a relatively new vaccine to prevent against HPV infection. It's not going to help those who are already infected, but it "absolutely" could help those who aren't yet infected with the ubiquitous virus, Verret said.
Meanwhile, people, especially younger people, need to realize that smoking is not the only risk factor for head and neck cancer. If you find a lump in your neck, even if you're only 20 or 30, "pay attention to it," Lydiatt said.

What if you combine someone who smokes with
the HPV? What if someone engages in oral
sex using a cigarette, and then smokes that
cigarette?

How many blowies would a person have to give to get cancer from it? I feel like 95% of people would never have to worry about this.

Could be a billion, could be one. That's how infectious diseases are.

I'm some what confused by this statement they make: "In the study, having six or more oral sex partners over a lifetime was associated with a 3.4 times higher risk for oropharyngeal cancer cancers of the base of the tongue, back of the throat or tonsils. Having 26 or more vaginal-sex partners tripled the risk."
Triples what risk? Triple the 3.4 times greater risk?
kinserJan 30, 2011
I think of HPV related cancer.
dusanmalJan 31, 2011
They are comparing how many oral sex partners give similar risk of HPV caused cancer to the number of vaginal sex partners. It is approximately 6 to 26 for approximately same risk (3.4 approx. 3). Greater risk per partner in oral sex. 4 to 5 times greater risk.

Yeah it really sucks.
murrayc1968Jan 31, 2011
I find the article hard to swallow
schram101Jan 30, 2011
What a sensationalist title. If your partner has HPV then you have a higher risk, not because you give a bj
glassagateJan 30, 2011
I'm guessing that it has to do with HPV, too.
goweigusJan 30, 2011
BECAUSE IT SURE AS HELL ISN"T TIED TO MARIJUANA USE
(I'm serious, it isn't, marijuana use doesn't increase risk of head/neck/mouth/throat or any cancer)
ahahahhahha! Take that cancer!
murrayc1968Jan 31, 2011
No, but marijuana does DECREASE your sperm count.
goweigusJan 31, 2011
Personally I haven't seen any studies that found those results from a proper test (if you read how anti/marijuana studies are done they usually bypass the scientific method in a bad way). But I have read in a couple places that heavy marijuana use can make it so sperm swim too hard too fast and run out of energy before they can reach the egg.
Either way it sounds like a good thing to me! Because there is 0 evidence that the children of marijuana users have any kind of genetic/birth/long term problems caused by marijuana.
neotechniJan 31, 2011
yes it does actually
angryredplanetJan 31, 2011
Smoking Marijuana is not harmless. Lungs have evolved to oxygenate blood, not to infuse smoke. I've read that Marijuana smoke "doesn't congest the lungs" and that it "aids removal of other chemicals like cigarette smoke"... however all lung irritants are dealt with the same way: by clearing (coughing), tissue inflammation and phlegm build up. Physiologically speaking, your lungs don't say "hey it's only Marijuana, relax it's a false alarm".
THC, although psychoactive, is not toxic to humans, so if Marijuana was baked as cakes or vaporised then the zero-harm position has reasonable grounds. I also understand and respect that it has notable medical uses.
Marijuana smoke contains carcinogens and there is research suggesting that usage could be linked to mental illness, behavioural problems, memory loss, infertility, emphysema, heart disease, cancer and more. However, there are also studies that contradict these findings.
The problem, as you note, is that these studies are inconclusive, there has been no extensive long term research done on the effects of Marijuana on users. It's an illegal substance and governments won't likely bend any laws or provide funding to check how harmful something that's already illegal, really is.
So it's prudent to note that an absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence.
goweigusJan 31, 2011
There are actually a lot of long term studies on marijuana users and they all come back with great results. Even life time smokers (as long as they only smoked pot and not also cigarettes) have no increased risk of any kind of cancer over non smokers. Even the Federal Government keeps having studies that prove their positions on marijuana wrong.
I don't believe smoking marijuana doesn't cause some kind of harm, but even smoking marijuana won't give you some kind of cancer (that is how powerfully anti cancer THC and the other cannabinoids are). I absolutely recommend though that no one smoke it and that they vaporize it, but it absolutely isn't harmful compared to smoking cigarettes.
goweigusJan 31, 2011
There are plenty of US government funded studies since even before the 70s that prove how harmless marijuana is. I realize it isn't 100% harmless but you can say that it is compared to smoking cigarettes.

If you try and spend some time looking up the truth its pretty easy, The US government funds marijuana studies all the time and they come back and spit in their face and then they try and keep the study quiet, or completely ignore them like Nixon did.
questeelaJan 30, 2011
I think this is scary. Must they seriously blame oral sex of all things? Surely there are other factors.

What about the rise in tongue piercings link to cancer???
Betcha there IS one ;)
dimaslucianoJan 30, 2011
Oh my good !!?!!
glassagateJan 30, 2011
Might it be because of the human papillomavirus? That
little critter is a nasty one. Hasn't it been known to
cause a number of cancers, and trigger diabetes, to those
who contract it, or am I thinking of something else?
cosmicsurferJan 31, 2011
Considering I had cervical, uterine and ovarian cancer within 10 years of contracting HPV from my EX-HUSBAND (emphasis on EX...I contracted it my 3rd yr of marriage...He contracted it in MY 3RD YR of marriage...funny how that works)...interesting that the carcinoma in situ showed up exactly where the HPV did....
HPV will cause oral cancer in some people and , just like with me, is a major contributor to cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers.

This story is four years old. The only new information is this one line:
"A 2010 Swedish study, in fact, suggested that the rise in oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer in a number of countries 'is caused by a slow epidemic of HPV infection-induced (cancers).'"
EchoTVJan 31, 2011
