cmon, like Thomas Edison? I don't think the iPhone flashlight apps qualify him for this...

Edison was a CEO as well, and a very smart one.

But this would make Apple the dreaded "Main Stream". Nothing cool about that in Digg land.
hipmanDec 9, 2010
Yeah and the fact that they're a leading multi-billion dollar company didn't make them as such?.
richidDec 9, 2010Staff
There's no way Apple could ever be considered not mainstream: their market cap is bigger than Microsoft's.

LOL. I misread your initial comment; thought it said "There's no way Apple could ever be considered mainstream" and the fanboi in me got enraged.
agmlauncherDec 9, 2010
Apple has been big, mainstream, and evil for a long time. Their app store policy, their attempts at stifling jailbreaking, the fact that they take it up the ass from AT&T and disallow users to turn the iPhone into a wifi hotspot just so they have to pay AT&T an extra $20/month for the exact same bandwidth they're already paying for, the "just hold it differently" emails from Steve Jobs etc.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Digg Staffers? Never seen that before. Guess we can't Bury their comments or it's "Closed Account" time.

I don't care too much for Apple, but IMO he deserves this. He single-handedly turned Apple around. Not so sure about those comparisons though.
ryanhorricksDec 9, 2010
I have to agree, while I jumped on the apple hate for a good long while I'm not posting this from my Macbook Pro with my iPhone 4 sitting next to me, and I'll be damned if I don't love them both. I think 7 is a great OS but the only laptops that compare to a MBP is a Lenovo, and they have similar price points. As for the iPhone 4, there was nothing special about the 3G or 3GS, but the 4 kicks the s**t out of any other smartphone I've used, and I had the original Dream (imported it to Canada before we had it here) as well as the Sony X10.

Um....duh?.That's not really saying anything.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ryanhorricksDec 9, 2010
I'm talking in terms of build quality, battery life, and general usability. Every other laptop I have ever used besides those two brands has been s**t tier for battery life.
hipmanDec 9, 2010
Were those other ones at similar price points?.
agmlauncherDec 9, 2010
Lenovo? I wouldn't trust that Chinese piece of crap for a second.
ryanhorricksDec 9, 2010
Don't be racist, the Chinese can be pretty awesome in some aspects. Largely in that they tend to care very little about international laws and will deal with you as long as they get their money, but I like them nonetheless. Also: WoW gold.
phillaholicDec 9, 2010
You realize all laptops are made in china right?
philbertDec 9, 2010
The Chinese are currently the world leaders in Education.
jbarker6Dec 9, 2010
HA! because they only test a 100th of their population. Shiiiit any nation could be the leader in education if they only tested 10 people out of the country.
enantiodromiaDec 10, 2010
They are also the world leaders in misinformation and censorship.
Most Chinese people are not even aware a Chinese citizen won the Nobel Peace Prize, as the government has scrubbed their version of the Internet of all mention of this, and have made it against the law for their media to mention it.
phillaholicDec 11, 2010
And yet they are ranked higher in Education. What does that tell you?
demdudeDec 9, 2010
Do you mean Lenovo Thinkpads? Because every other Lenovo branded product I've ever used was s**t, too... And even with the Tinkpads the quality has gone way down since they took over for IBM. I know, because I've got a Lenovo IBM Thinkpad T61 sitting on the table next to me.
And that's also the reason why I'm now typing this on a new 13" Macbook Air. A way superior machine in every aspect.
3the3dude3Dec 10, 2010
I'm sorry, but the t61 is a tank. I used to partner with a a company (LiveU.tv) that provided a proprietary cellular uplink solution for live streaming of audio and video. The computer they provided to manage the software? a t61, that would be stuffed deep inside a backpack, along with the cellular hardware, encoding high bitrate video/audio, sometimes for hours.
It's not a pretty machine and I don't know if it's still their machine of choice, but it's battery life and reliability was mind blowing, especially it's heat tolerance.
.
In less confined situations where I was able to operate outside of the backpack, I was able to multitask on the t61 without compromising the a/v that I was encoding.
demdudeDec 10, 2010
There are a whole bunch of very different versions of the T61. I've seen one or two that actually seemed nearly as good as the older Thinkapds like the T42, but most can't quite hold a candle to them. Don't get me wrong, they are still some of the very best PC laptops out there, but they have gotten worse over the past couple of years.
I've used my T61 for three and a half years, had to send it in for a burned out motherboard once (great support by the way, best in class imo, just as fast and reliable as Apple's), and it's now displaying some of the same issues it had about two months before the motherboard finally gave in.
However, I really didn't find it to be all that powerful - I have a machine with a C2D with 2x2Ghz, and it never really felt all that fast. Even 1080p Youtube videos often are choppy.
And as far as battery life goes - with the standard 4-cell battery it comes with, it's no more than 1.5 hours with little to no activity. I was able to get it to about 3 hours with the 6-cell battery, but that's still nothing to be proud of. And good battery life certainly isn't something the T61 is known for...
Personally, I'm so glad I finally got a laptop that doesn't creak at every seam, doesn't exude the feel of cheap plastic at every cover, and actually stays on for more than 7 hours during normal everyday use. And it's half as thick, half the weight and much, much faster!
thelegaceDec 10, 2010
Have you tried the x10 with Froyo, it is absolutely amazing. I absolutely love it, and enhancements that will be made thanks to devs at XDA will be spectacular. I can understand that the X10 really does suck, but in terms of hardware and design I have to hand it to X10. But software has more to do with a good phone, and unwillingness of idiots at Sony to update the damn phone is why the phone can be called "terrible" on its own.
manicdvlnDec 9, 2010
For company investors sure, but for his employees and society? That's something else.
zearthDec 9, 2010
I agree.. for the consumers I think not
mredofcourseDec 9, 2010
I think it could be argued that without Steve Jobs, there would be no Apple employees at all today, and as far as consumers go, I think maybe a good number of them are liking Apple's products. Even those not buying Apple's products may be buying products influenced by Apple.
As far as society? That's a pretty complex philosophical issue with pros and cons on each side.
manicdvlnDec 9, 2010
Well one of the aspects that needs to be debated is apple's closed design. Has it really helped the tech industry or just apple?
3the3dude3Dec 10, 2010
A lot of Apple's consumers don't realize that there is nothing particularly "magical" about the hardware or OS inside a Macbook to justify the obscene expense of buying Apple. There is a DIFFERENCE between Mac OS and Windows, but Mac OSX retails for less than Windows 7 (thus, it doesn't justify the price differentiation).
When it comes to computer hardware, Apple hasn't influenced anything other than external aesthetics.
The mp3 player and smart phone were not Apple concepts, but Apple did hit a home run with the iPod and iPhone.
macparrotDec 10, 2010
What exactly does the retail cost of either Windows or OS X have to do with the price of Macs? It DOES add to the cost of a Windows machine since Microsoft doesn't make computers, but the retail cost of OS X does not. If Apple suddenly charged $300 and had four different versions of OS X would that make it easier to justify the higher cost?
As far as computer hardware goes, Apple has more influence that you think. Internal components no, no computer maker has much to say about that, but all-in-one computers pretty much first done by Apple. Digital music players while not invented by Apple, they were certainly the first to have any real success with the general public, same thing with digital music. Or do you really think that we'd be better off by a market as defined by music studios and the RIAA? Smart phones again were not an Apple invented concept, but they did with the iPhone take away the power from the telcos over hardware design and (for the most part) features. Android phones have many built-in features that are dictated by the company selling them not by the manufacturer.
enantiodromiaDec 10, 2010
all the Apple employees i know love going to work everyday, and as far as society goes, he put unix into the regular person's hands, and helped created a way for basically unsigned artists to get their music distributed and sold.
seems like Apple has done some pretty cool things.

Steve Jobs has basically said he would ban porn on all apple products if he could (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/may/25/ipad-porn-free-steve-jobs). That alone makes me loathe him, not because I'm pro-porn, but rather anti-censorship.
macparrotDec 9, 2010
Even if he wanted to he couldn't ban porn on Macs since Apple has no control over apps or the web on OS X. They can and do ban apps with nudity in the iOS store. It's their playground and frankly if I need to look at BOOBIES that badly it's not like it's hard to do on any connected iPhone or iPad
knw257Dec 9, 2010
It's not so much a question of whether or not he 'can' do it, but he has pretty overtly expressed, or at least implied, that he 'would' do so if given the ability. This is censorship, plain and simple; whether or not he can carry it out is irrelevant to his character.
macparrotDec 9, 2010
How can it be censorship if it can't be done? The only part he controls is iOS apps and (so far) no one from Apple has said they're putting in mandatory web filters in any browser used by Apple devices.
knw257Dec 9, 2010
The idea is not that he *is* censoring, but simply that he wants to. this sheds light on his character that to me is an unlikable trait
enantiodromiaDec 10, 2010
...so you will censor Apple products from your life in retaliation?
knw257Dec 10, 2010
@enantidromia That's not the reason I dislike apple products, it's the reason I dislike Mr. Jobs
lnmagicDec 9, 2010
What about Alan Mullaly? I think he's done a tremendous job of turning around Ford. It's not just about product quality - Ford is now willing to discuss all their problems internally rather than avoiding them. It's a huge change for that corporation.
macparrotDec 9, 2010
The turnaround at Ford (and it WAS amazing! AND without Federal money) was great and I hope it continues (I bought a Flex and think it's a great car), but Jobs took a company that everyone in the field of tech had written off and made almost every right move you could to bring them back from dead.
demdudeDec 9, 2010
Exactly. He took a company that barely existed anymore at all from the brink of bankruptcy to being the second highest valued company in the world. With enough capital to actually be able to consider buying Sony, which itself is one of the most expensive companies in the world!

For all his doubters:
He brought computer to the mass.
He single-handedly change the phone market.
He brought the first 3D movie. (While funding their education for at least 4 years if my memory serve me well)
He created Apple and revived Apple.
Without him, Bill Gates will not give Apple 150 millions free money.
If you had the ability to talk the world richest man out to give you 150 millions dollar for nothing, you are already among the best.
Today, he beat Microsoft market cap.
He monopolized the portable musics market using charms and designs.
He created the mobile app store and helped developers worldwide to make decent income.
If you can do half of what he did, then we'll listen to you why he doesn't deserve it.
fyberopticDec 9, 2010
Steve Jobs was directly responsible for none of that. He didn't write a single line of code or design a single circuit in any of it. Apple Computers did. Jobs would still be hocking illegal stuff on the streets if it weren't for Wozniak. In fact, the two computers Jobs designed for Apple, the Lisa and Apple III, were total failures, and he was warned about his design choices ahead of time but he refused to listen. And let's not forget that products like OSX and the iPod were already in planning stages when Jobs returned. So you can't even call him a visionary, because he didn't envision any of them. He just road on the backs of geniuses, which is something he's well known to do.
And the funniest part is, the blue boxes that Jobs used to sell on the street were built by Wozniak too. And he almost got Woz shot and arrested on a couple of occasions. Great pal, that Steve Jobs.
So no, he's not the CEO of the decade, of the year, or even the month. He's just a big douche with ego problems, resulting in very public temper tantrums between Apple and other companies every few years.
lxcidDec 9, 2010
Steve Jobs have been attributed to often profit from Wozniak genius. One of the famous instance is where they work with Atari on breakout.
Wozniak acknowledged that even though he is the genius engineer, without Steve Jobs pushing and visionary, Apple might not be created and that's why he never hold grudge against him. He might not have coded anything, he still was the one steering the product, as Wozniak mentioned Steve Jobs always ask whether certain improvement in the view to make it sellable.
I can't comment on Lisa and Apple III. But apparently Apple I was a success and if you agree that Windows 1.0 is a copy of Macintosh (There's lots of source in the internet, a movie reference and even Steve Jobs had mentioned this publicly) than its a success.
Last I check, Mac OS X is from NeXT, a company he created after he was fired by Apple. Note that Wozniak is no longer involved here.
And as for iPod, from wikipedia:
As ordered by CEO Steve Jobs, Apple's hardware engineering chief Jon Rubinstein assembled a team of engineers to design the iPod line, including hardware engineers Tony Fadell and Michael Dhuey,[5] and design engineer Jonathan Ive.[4] The product was developed in less than one year and unveiled on 23 October 2001. Jobs announced it as a Mac-compatible product with a 5 GB hard drive that put "1,000 songs in your pocket."[6]
So how is Steve Jobs not be involve if the project started on 2000 and Steve is back at helm at 1996?
iPhone iPad is definitely his baby no argument about that.
He helped developers who had been at the mercy of fragmentation, carriers and operators in mobile space for a long time to finally able to make some decent money. Before that, there's little one man success story floating around. now with app store. this is getting common.
Steve Jobs also bought Pixar from George Lucas when the company is not even making any film. He funded them from 1986 - 1995, yes including their education as noted by Ed Catmull when the company is not making much profit. At 2006 Disney bought Pixar, making Steve Jobs the biggest shareholder. No argument how much awards Pixar earned.
If you want to argue, get your historical view right first. If you had doubt in any of my points. I would be glad to guide you to the source. Many are widely available on the net, wiki and youtube.
enantiodromiaDec 10, 2010

how i loathe generation web20...
macparrotDec 9, 2010
It doesn't matter how brilliant your engineers are or how good your coders are if they aren't moved in the right direction. Like him or hate him, Jobs makes really good guesses at where technology is going or should be going. Nearly every tech writer hated the iPod. It grew to be the number one seller of digital music devices even though there were a LOT of other devices that had more features or were lower in price. iTunes is now the number one seller of digital content. The iPhone completely changed the smartphone industry. The iPad is creating a entire new industry for computing.
It doesn't matter if Apple wasn't the first to create these devices, what matters is that the ones THEY make seem to capture the public's eye and the rest of the industry follows. It isn't all because of marketing. If that were true, then the Mac would be the number one computer today because since the iMac originally came out, they have marketed the hell out of it. It has grown well over 3 times it's 90s market share which is fine, but it will never reach anywhere near MS's share.
And before you accuse me of excess fanboyism, there's been a good number of flops as well. The original MacBook Air, the original AppleTV, the iPod HiFi amongst them, very heavily marketed by Apple that pretty much went nowhere. In tech however to be successful you only need to be right about 25% of the time. Jobs is batting probably near .700
enantiodromiaDec 10, 2010
as usual, you only know half the story, lol.
OSX was already in the design stages at Apple before Jobs came back? let's see... where did OS X come from?
"Mac OS X is based upon the Mach kernel. Certain parts from FreeBSD's and NetBSD's implementation of Unix were incorporated in NeXTSTEP, the core of Mac OS X. NeXTSTEP was the object-oriented operating system developed by Steve Jobs' company NeXT after he left Apple in 1985."
you have yet to make ONE intelligent post re a tech story, and i seriously doubt your opinion about business has more merit than countless CEOs and analysts who have _nothing at all to gain_ by putting the check next to Job's name on the "CEO of the Decade" voting form.
i do think it's cute you have such a crush on Woz though. maybe if you're lucky he may look in your direction some day; i suggest wearing a donut suit.

macparrotDec 9, 2010
Awww, it's SO cute that your bitterness over other people's success makes you blind to what real accomplishments are. No one else could have brought Apple back from the dead like Jobs did. It wasn't because he was a great coder or engineer, it was because he knew what his coders and engineers could make if steered in the right direction. How much code did Steve Balmer write for Windows 7? And yet it's a great product. Did he engineer the XBox 360? Another great device. Do you really think Bill Gates sat and wrote code for Windows 95, the first product to really give Apple a run for it's money (and in many ways surpassed it) in ease of use? I'm guessing no he didn't. But he knew what he wanted and moved his coders towards that goal. That's what a great CEO can do.
enantiodromiaDec 10, 2010
oh right, he photoshopped those pics of him in all those early Apple Computer photos, am i right?
do you have any sort of adult job yet, or are you still wearing a name tag?
statichargeMar 27, 2011
It amazes me that you think he was actually involved in the Apple or Apple II's development. Proof again that Apple fanboys know very little about Apple's history or Jobs himself.
Do your homework next time. Wozniak designed and built the first Apple I and Apple II computers 100% by himself. The first thing Jobs helped design, however, the Apple Lisa, was the first huge failure from Apple. His second project, the Apple III, was also a huge flop. Wozniak wasn't in on the design of either of those. It was your buddy Jobs, proving how talentless he was/is, by choosing aesthetics over function.
This comment may have been old, but I can't resist schooling fanboys when I come across them.
