As a T-Mobile customer, at this point my only hope is that this deal with not meet with government approval. I'm amazed that the massive corporation the government forced to break up over concerns of a monopoly is on course to do the exact same thing. I see nothing positive for consumers if this goes through.
weirddemonMar 21, 2011
Quit it, seriously. More than likely, this is going through.
A lot of people are saying this is going to suck. And it might, but you're going to end up making it a self-fulfilling prophecy if you go into it with the mindset that it's going to suck.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Having been with AT&T as a landline customer, cell phone customer, TV and internet customer, it IS going to suck. There's a reason they are consistently rated at the bottom in terms of quality and customer service.
laborerMar 21, 2011
Its not a matter of whether or not it turns out okay or if it "sucks". Thats like saying a (mostly) benevolent dictator wouldnt be so bad.
That is a huge f**king telecom company now.
Perhaps, yes, the new king might be exceptionally friendly (today), but I dont want him to have that concentration of power. Its just one big ass oppurtunity for corruption, which is what the problem is. Not whether or not the emporer seems generally congenial.
Well, at least Sprint will get more business from the few out there who have been properly taught to vote with their dollar. But most will probably go on using AT&T. f**k.
mlw4428Mar 21, 2011
You speak like AT&T has never been corrupt. May I remind you of the wonderful job they did of wiretapping Americans without warrants for the Bush administration?
Closed AccountMar 21, 2011
Self-fulfilling prophecy? You mean the newly combined carrier isn't likely to exploit their massive market share and diminished competition unless we point out that inevitability beforehand?
You're right, it probably will go through. (Look at the Comcast-NBC deal to see how horribly pro-business the government is) But that's no reason for us to sit down, shut up, and take the corporate beating. We need to fight tooth and nail. If you don't care enough to do so, fine, but don't tell others to "quit it".
novenatorMar 21, 2011
Huge corporations should indeed not be allowed to merge like this. There is a reason why anti-trust laws exist.
bossm4nMar 22, 2011Submitter
I agree 100% with that.
novenatorMar 22, 2011
Even though we disagree on many more things than we agree on, there is room to work together on a few things (I think we agree on net neutrality and ending the "Patriot" Act too IIRC).
karenmhowardMar 22, 2011
Every time I see one of these telecom mergers, I wonder why we ever broke up Bell telephone in the first place. Seems like all the Kings horses and all the Kings men managed to put Ma Bell back together again.
novenatorMar 22, 2011
That was the start of the privatization mania that has engulfed America for over 30 years. It won't be long before they try to sell of public utilities to the Koch brothers... oh wait, they're already doing that in Wisconsin!
fearmejackoMar 22, 2011
ATT customers will see better service. But it will probably mean price hikes, and more data congestion for you bro, sry.
neosporinMar 22, 2011
Take it from a Canadian: We have 3 large telecom companies (Bell and Rogers, mainly) that control our industry, and it is absolutely horrid. The Canadian telecom industry is seldom regulated and relies mainly on market forces, the market forces of companies who own the internet service, land phone and cell phone service, cable and satellite television, video rental, and even the material being shown on television.
They stand to lose the most out of the open nature of the internet, and in Canada they have the power, with poor regulation, to do what they want. They throttle connection speeds and they enforce usage based billing, usually around 60GB a month usage before you start paying $2-5 per GB you go over.
dianelandisgracelyMar 23, 2011
I am a T-Mobile customer for over 6 years now and I do NOT want to see this deal go through. I have always hated AT & T.
artthouboredMar 21, 2011
Relax, it's not costing me any extra. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7Wk9LeNSBg
bossm4nMar 21, 2011Submitter
If anyone was going to acquire T-Mobile, I supposed Sprint would have been the best option, but there were some major hurdles to overcome, namely their networks being totally incompatible. I just hope most of my T-Mobile plans, fees, etc are grandfathered if this deal goes through.
phillaholicMar 21, 2011
For the most part they should be. You won't be able to change anything at all though. My Dad kept his Cingular plan for years after the AT&T switch until we finally got everyone under a family plan.
jftitanMar 22, 2011
I'm two months into a new contract with T-Mobile, (family plan two phones) I have a MyTouch 4G, and a Optimus T (3G) And with AT&T saying that all 3G phones will eventually not work under the changes to t-mobiles integration to AT&T, I better see some sweet talking going on in a year.
Of course, this is under the presumption that AT&T gets the green light.
The only thing I can see out of AT&T on this deal, is they get bragging rights, again... (Which is exactly what SBC wanted when it merged back with AT&T). Someone in the Executive department of SBC went over seas, and apparently he wasn't impressed with the rest of the world saying... "who the f**k is SBC?" So SBC acquired/merged with AT&T, now the exec gets to say, "I work for AT&T", so now the world can know this exec is a big wig.
anywho, my point is this. Anything that Ma Bell gets its hands on, gets f**ked and ruined
macbookformeMar 21, 2011
Surely nothing good for an individual consumer in this deal
darkmatter911Mar 21, 2011
As a consumer I hope that this deal is blocked. The marketplace needs more competition not less.
bigtime2Mar 21, 2011
I hope so too. We should all write to our congressmen to complain about this. Otherwise it will definitely be approved.
neosporinMar 22, 2011
This would effectively turn America into Canada's internet industry, 3 companies all charging a lot for less than average speeds. There isn't any competition, so there isn't anything new.
They've all began imposing bandwidth limits, and almost successfully passed their bandwidth caps onto independent companies before our government stepped in.

If only Metro PCS had better phones, $50 a month for unlimited everything is a steal compared to the $90 I pay for sprint.
laborerMar 21, 2011
Link? Where do they serve?
corinthosMar 21, 2011
Google it you lazy f**k. I put metro pcs into google and it came up with both a link to the site and the coverage map.
bigtime2Mar 21, 2011
Chill out dude, he was just asking a question, not trying to rob you.
rudegarMar 21, 2011
is it only the American T-mobile department they want to buy or ?
dmm219Mar 21, 2011
yes...just US t mobile
badqatMar 21, 2011
Sprint is of course butthurt because they'd hoped to swallow T-Mobile and be on the cusp of the positions of AT&T and Verizon.
T-Mobile customers are undoubtedly better off with this outcome, because we've already seen what sort of horrors happen when Sprint absorbs competitors with different technologies - see the so-called Sprint-Nextel merger.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
laborerMar 21, 2011
The s**t they are.
The total elimination of Ulimited Plans within a year will -really- benefit the consumer, eh?
If you supported a lack of competition, why not just have a public corporation handle it. Im sure even our city workers could maintain a better network than AT&T.
skribbleMar 21, 2011
You mean like Sprint's unlimited everything plan for one low price, except for the extra $ they charge if you want a phone to take advantage of the unlimited data, and more if your phone could possible take advantage of unlimited data as a reasonable speed even if they don't actually provide that speed within 200 mile of your location?
BTW, if you have a plan you like just stick with it. AT&T said they will honor existing T-Mo plans, and I know AT&T have enabled me to keep my plan for years (unlimited BTW).
Yes AT&T sucks... or whatever, but if this goes through it will 1. help currently AT&T customers by providing backhaul that would take years to build out. Thus better overall experience. 2. Help T-Mo customers with better coverage in many areas.
Yes Sprint gets screwed, but for a while Sprint was top dog in the mobile space, they got themselves in the position they are in by making bad decisions and generally sucking. I've never had the problems on AT&T that I had on Sprint.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

As a T-Mobile customer I hope its blocked and screw Sprint, I'd like to complain about the inevitable price hike for existing T-Mobile customers. Oh and the lack of choice for handsets from 1 big player buying them all in bulk. Also the slow down in development of new network coverage and performance thanks to the costs they just incurred by buying another network and converting it all over to AT&T evil.
Here's a crazy idea: SPEND THAT 39 BILLION(!) ON UPGRADES 'N s**t INSTEAD, YA FRIKKIN MORONS!!
skribbleMar 21, 2011
Dude this is an upgrade. Clearly you have no idea of the logistics of adding wireless capacity (towers, backhaul, etc all of these require land, wires, antenna's permits from a gazzilon local govt's etc...). With this AT&T gets the hardest parts of expanding their network in 1/10th the time it would take to build it and probably save money at the same time. Plus, it's all compatible technology, and ready to upgrade to LTE.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I'm complaining too. Let's not turn an oligarchy in to a monopoly.

But thanks for offering to link to your option vs. just saying it.
chrisinsocalifMar 21, 2011
I have AT&T uverse and they just capped my data, I hope they will not cap my t-mobile plan if they merge. Man this sucks!
witnessxMar 21, 2011
Oh, they will. They were the first ones to clamp down on bandwith usage. Just the other day they went after users who tether their phones to the laptop. They were forced to spend another $30 or so to add tethering to their plan.
racheljtmMar 21, 2011
I would complain if I were Sprint too
rragonMar 21, 2011
At&T did NOT acquire T-Moible for their technology. They acquired T-Mobile for their easements.
