Pretty good article covering what to watch out for when dealing with these kind of auctions. On the legitimate sites, you can score some excellent deals. But I'd say they're few and far between (the sites and actually winning). Definitely places you wanna read the fine print on, and if interested, set a certain amount aside and stick to it. That said, I stick with good ol' eBay. Not as great of deals, but typically know exactly what I'm getting myself into.

I'm definitely one that didn't read the fine print before hand... Live and learn... and applaud a great business model...

Great business model? Just last week there was an article here about how they were all going under.

I welcome any alternate to ebay.

I love how you think this is some new thing, or even a blip on the radar of Ebay.

Right, cuz that's exactly what I posted.

It seems to me that when I see quotes of how much something costs on one of those sites in advertisement pieces, they leave out how much the bids cost and state how much the pennies add up to.

I don't trust if the website is pushing bids with ghost accounts... that was always my thought.

I dislike such website. I've been to one out of curiosity. Advertising was showing a '42 HD TV sold and shipped for like 100$. Sounds interresting right?
This particular website (Bidou.ca) charges 0.99$ for a 1 cents bid. Much like the websites described in this article, users can bid until the timer hits 0. Time it which the last bidder has won the item.
So basicly, a TV, at 100$ has had 10 000, 1 cent bids, each with a 0.99 fee. So a '42 HD TV was sold for 9900$ worth of fees + 100$. BUT WAIT, shipping is free!!
And while the website is pretty clear about this process, it does feel a little "dirty buisness".

REally ? Penny auctions REALLY needed two front page stories in a week ? Even though the vast majority of people have never HEARD ofthem, let alone use them?

Even after the bid costs, most bidders come out way ahead if they win an item. The losers? Well, they get nothing at all out of the deal..
At MyBidShack, we figured penny auction sites make way too much profit to keep all for themselves.. so 50% goes back to the bidders on our site- EVEN the people that don't win auctions can share in the HUGE profits with the company.

I`ve always afraid of loosing on such sites. Though some offers seem attractive for example they have a very nice car there http://www.bidhere.com
