They...uh...fixed the glitch.

There are those who find a wallet full of money and make a determined effort to find the owner. And there are others who will tell a bank clerk or a teller that they have given them too much change. Many would turn in a bag of money that fell off a truck or return money they found that they knew wasn't rightfully theirs. And then there are folks with lower morals and ethics who feel comfortable gaming the system, taking things they know they shouldn't.
Someone may escape prosecution on technicalities but it doesn't mean they are guiltless. A remarkable and sad commentary at the same time.
machtspassJul 24, 2011
Wishing we could digg a comment twice. Yours is definitely worthy! Truly nailed it.....
CaseyStonesJul 24, 2011
Your so right. I actually did return a fist full of hundred dollar bills to the bank teller as an example for my kids. I made it all the way out of the bank, into my car and half way home. I didn't discover it until I wanted to make a quick stop at a conviencence store. I returned to the bank to find a tearful teller about to loose her job and a shocked staff that I returned.

"And then there are folks with lower morals and ethics who feel comfortable gaming the system, taking things they know they shouldn't."
And those people exist at all levels. Sadly, that includes positions of economic and political power where the money and consequences are larger. Even worse, the perception is they get away with their actions. For every Madoff, how many never get caught or face punishment?
mlw4428Jul 25, 2011
Funny thing, my mom once turned in some money to the bank that overpaid her. A few years later she went through some hard times and that same bank coldly foreclosed on her. Now I'm not one to make the bold assertion that the $50 she was overpaid would have done much, but at least she'd have had $50 to buy groceries.
It's funny how Republicans expect people to be courteous to their bosses and other companies, yet we'll ignore when companies and bosses are cold hearted to people.
helpfuldudeJul 24, 2011
she may legally have to pay it all back.
publikjohn9Jul 24, 2011
Doubtful. She didn't steal it.
cantstopwontstopJul 25, 2011
for her to say nothing all of this time shows malicious intent and fraud. she probably even claimed taxes on this (stolen) money, also stealing from the government - which is also fraud.
they may even find that the reason why she got the pay checks is because she tampered with the system and that was why it was over looked.
you're defending this woman? even after they cut off her free money flow, she wants them to pay her retirement savings - savings taken out of a check she was never supposed to get in the first place and never worked for. she's gone beyond pushing her luck.
keep in mind this is a government job. if someone gets a check from the government that is over the amount owed and you cash it and keep the balance and they find out - you do have to pay that money back.
she's not taking from some greedy corporation, she's taking from the tax payers.
publikjohn9Jul 25, 2011
"she's not taking from some greedy corporation, she's taking from the tax payers."
Does not matter really. The fact is she was suspended with pay and they forgot to fire her. It's not her fault they f**ked up.
Really I hope she comes out on top with this one.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

If nothing else, People, try to recognize a story that leaves out important facts -- e.g. "Police found no evidence of wrongdoing by Jill McGlone ..." and "Police learned that she attempted numerous times to return to work after being suspended in 1998, the sources said. Each time, she was told to remain home, they said."
test_particleJul 25, 2011
Still, it seems like the onus was on her in that situation to try and get to the bottom of whether she was actually employed or not. Not that she did anything terribly wrong, but she probably could have contacted someone higher up to get the situation resolved.
suzillaJul 25, 2011
Really? How often do we complain about government bureaucracy, red-tape getting in the way of getting anything done, etc? When it comes to, say, getting a building permit or getting a local council to repair a pothole it seems like it takes for ever. I don't think it works any faster in cases such as this one. It wasn't simply a matter of stopping payment; a decision on her employment status had to be made before any other action could be taken. In fact, doing nothing at all about it would draw (immediate) complaints from ... no one.
The one thing NO source mentions is what she did with the money. For all we know, she's kept an account of it and intends to give back every penny. Don't you think that's a rather critical piece of the story? Of course, it wouldn't have made much of a rant for the "award winning" blogger.
cowboydan97Jul 25, 2011
No one take this woman's stapler, please.
zbeastJul 25, 2011
12 year's wow... great work if you can get it.
GirlindaytonaJul 25, 2011
It sounds like this whole agency is incompetent but as for the employee who collected the money, she was doing what she was told to do. Incompetence is it's own punishment.
sparkieJul 25, 2011
You do something wrong at a government job, you get suspended (with or without pay can depend on what you did) then, during your suspension you go home and wait for your hearing. From a purely technical standpoint, she was discriminated against (If they just 'fixed the glitch' and she was never given a fair hearing on her suspension).
The wheels of government can turn slowly, hardly her fault that it took 12 years.
Not to mention the huge gaping hole of information missing from the AOL article that other sites are carrying. When you read the full story, it doesn't paint her in such a bad light. Course ... it is easier to use the jump to conclusions mat.

Staying mute for 12 years is one thing, but suing for wrongful termination makes it clear she's just sorry trash.

Short the stock of this company.
bosco9Jul 24, 2011
Short this company? She was working for a federal agency. Your tax dollars at work!
Looking4LaughsJul 24, 2011
Actually, I believe this was a local government agency. But now that she has all those years experience, I'm sure she could get a similar gig in Washington.
battmannJul 25, 2011
guess this proves , yet , another reason why we have a trillion dollar defecit!
publiclurkerJul 25, 2011
I really doubt she was in any position to start multiple immoral and ilegal wars, let alone give billions to the wealthy.
sloppyjoes7Jul 25, 2011
"let alone give billions to the wealthy."
The government does not give any money to the wealthy, much less "billions."

She did nothing wrong--she was suspended from the company, not terminated, and so was still on the payroll.
gmarmJul 25, 2011
You should see how many of that you can find in Greece. People get paid for decades after dying or not even showing up at work. No wonder we're in the deep s**t right now.

if someone kept sending me a check i would keep taking it. who am i to question authority?
she wasn't doing anything wrong. it wasn't her fault they kept paying her. should she have said something? i don't know that i would have.
but i have done things like return money to someone that overpaid me. one time someone left the ATM and when i pulled up it asked if i wanted another transaction. i could have cleared out this guy's bank account, but i didn't. i turned the card into the bank.
just because you keep accepting money that someone is paying you doesn't mean you lack all moral sense.
publiclurkerJul 25, 2011
She did say something. She asked when she could report back to work multiple times and was told each time to stay at home. I can see why she's just give up after awhile.

Yeah. Amazing that anyone would receive an award for work they didn't do. Like claiming they were a journalist -- an AWARD-WINNING one, no less! -- when in fact they're just writing sensationalist hack pieces, leaving out crucial facts, such as the police saying they found no evidence of wrong-doing, or McGlone trying several times to go back to work and being told to stay home.
Just amazing that anyone would actually be PAID for sitting at home and writing crap like this.
(I'm guessing the author isn't, in fact, paid, and that her award was presented by her dog, LiverSpot, most likely under her bed, where he often deposits his "awards"..)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Is there anything that people won't sue for? Wonder if they can get any of the money back. Obviously she knew she was getting it by mistake.
machtspassJul 24, 2011
You're exactly right! ...and it's interesting to notice that when the economy is in a lull, more lawsuits seem to materialize. <heavy sigh>
@Getting the money back: Not sure of all of the details, but because she was placed on "suspension with pay", unless the department had a policy on maximum length of suspension, there'll probably be no chance of getting a court to order restitution (not to mention trying to get the money back from this turnip (is that how the saying goes? <grin>)). This whole event was pretty poorly-handled and someone's head will probably roll over this . . if the department head or HR manager is still part of the organization. Otherwise, it'll just be a minor embarrassment if those managers have moved on and a pretty sad use of our collective tax dollars.....
odkinJul 24, 2011
Great job, government workers!
Notice that this isn't some faceless corporation with a mega payroll - it's a city government agency, and SEVERAL city workers were complicit in this and their fellow government union buddies are refusing to prosecute.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Goddamn I need to be a corrupt ex-cop on the dole.
I mean WtF? Tomorrow I will be getting my ass beat, crawling around servers, occasionally running into all sorts of nasty s**t up in there. And for what? Money is nice, but so is life.
I wouldn't even be an a*hole about it: You'd see me at all sorts of weird meetup geek groups, buying the occasional drink for someone at the bar, and chillin on the beach.
People would say: "Yeah, we see him all the time. Don't know WtF he does, but he has $$$. He seems pretty happy with life."
I'd set it up with a friend who was doing badly so he could sue the department and we both party.
What a bunch of s**t.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
