We should fix this by giving tax breaks to corporations and the rich. /s
crapolatimeOct 13, 2010
Meanwhile people send lots of their money to 'other' third world nations to help their homeless and hungry.
People don't give a f**k about their own local people who are homeless or hungry.

You have got to be kidding. Those people would kill for your first-world standards of "homeless and hungry".
ericschc1Oct 13, 2010
I don't think its because they don't give a f**k. Likely has more to do with the fact that certain political ideologies have stigmatized anyone giving their own money to fellow countrymen even when its voluntary.

I only donate to people who live in my area, as does the corporation I work for.

Same here. Its really better than donating on your own because you can maintain anonymity (donate individually and you'll have every cause under the sun contacting you).

Americans spend all of their money in America. Immigrants send their earned money to their home country. A little bit isn't bad. A lot means a money drain. The more tied they are to the home country, the more money sent home and less spent here or invested here.

It would be nearly impossible to sustain a family at the poverty rate ($17K for a single mom with two children). There are at least that many families living at a label we would likely consider impoverished.
The federal government can't fix this; they're deep in debt and need to make cuts. State governments are in worse trouble. This isn't something that we're going to grow out of (economically), because most of the wealth from economic growth has been going to the top 1% for over a decade now.
This is just going to be a fact of life for 21st-century America.
grammerpantsOct 13, 2010
Sustain? No. Help them help themselves? Absolutely. Plenty of social programs that are funded by the public that can turn lives around.
hillsfarOct 13, 2010
The poverty rate is currently defined at $22,050 for a family of 4. However, it doesn't tell you that if you were to raise the poverty rate to $25,000 for a family of 4, instead of 40 million Americans, it would be 100 million Americans.

Seriously, the economy needs to be more equal. It's not about re-distribution after the fact, it's about better distribution up front. We need both more dignity, and a fairer calibration of contribution to pay.
See how it could be here: http://www.trickler.org If you earn a $105k or less, it shows your pay going up in a more equal (and more prosperous) USA.

Immigrants send their money to their home country? Remember history. Immigrants also spend their money here because they buy foods, pay rents, buy car, gas, clothing. If they send money to their home country it's mostly because they want to help close relatives living there, like parents, children, brothers and sisters.

It's all Reagan's fault.

Jimmy Carter and Barrack have set major economic milestones in history. What have we learned?
eraptorOct 13, 2010
It's a bad idea to run for president after, yet another, corrupt and incompetent Republican has disgracefully left the country in a mess. In Jimmy Carter's case, it was Nixon/Ford, while Obama has to contend with the Bush/Cheney legacy.

What was the old line... "do you feel better off now, or two years ago?"
Lol... Laff Riot if it wasn't so sad.
