I think it's a little disingenuous and this coming from someone who's sorta anti-car. (not completely but I think they're overused and to relied upon). The pictures are from different parts of park avenue making it look got it got s**ttier then you would think. Here's a the google streetview link of the area in the first image as it appears now http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=St.+Bartholomew%27s+Episcopal+Church+on+Park+Avenue&fb=1&gl=us&hq=St.+Bartholomew%27s+Episcopal+Church+on+Park+Avenue&hnear=Hicksville,+NY&cid=0,0,17884229390481622211&ei=tf6ITJe3OoG78ga619GdBQ&ved=0CCMQnwIwAQ&ll=40.757205,-73.974069&spn=0.004665,0.011362&z=17&layer=c&cbll=40.75703,-73.973973&panoid=XQTs-bhO7HmZ7AUdiOcMrQ&cbp=12,40,,0,-6.3 While I still prefer the carless one, this one isn't as bad as the south of grand central images shown in the article.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

also, it creates this fairy tale of "walking cities." Before cars personal mobility was quite limited. Unless you had a good amount of money and could pay for a carriage service you weren't going to far from your home. This area of park ave was an exclusive big money area. Since the introduction of cars people can drive from all over to come visit the area.
Yes, walking is nice. But, we have to remember the freedom the car has given the average american.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

example:
Japan and France have each spent as much per capita on high-speed rail as we spent on our Interstate Highway System. The average American travels 4,000 miles and ships 2,000 ton-miles per year on the interstates. Yet the average resident of Japan travels only 400 miles per year on bullet trains, while the average resident of France goes less than 300 miles per year on the TGV — and these rail lines carry virtually no freight.

100 - 120 years ago everybody rode a bike in the US. There were 30k bike manufacturers in the US alone. Just look up the images from these times. Then came Ford T and with it pollution, congestion, deadly accidents and dependency on oil.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

and all of a sudden a middle class family could drive 300 miles for a weekend vacation instead of biking to their local park.
