Yes, I often look around the nice house my $100 k/yr salary pays for and envy those bums living the high life in city shelters eating government cheese and partying down on quality Listerine. Lucky, lucky bastards.

This actually understates the problem, if the burden placed on the tax payers is a concern. Consider teachers, military personnel, government contractors, police officers, and other government workers. A very large body of people can only feed themselves and their families because the state is as large and money-hungry as it is. If any threat is made to the size and scope of the state, there will literally be millions of people who will protest cuts vigorously.

That article is very deceptive. You really should break that down. How much of that goes to military and gov job pensions? How much of that is Social Security? How much of that is unemployment which mostly comes from employers unemployment insurance payments. If you want to prove a point you can always find some data to prove it. Also does that list include Military and Gov jobs? How many people are truly getting a hand out?

Then add in layoffs, lost savings, lost retirement funds and the resulting foreclosures. We now have more households then ever housing multiple generations of multiple families. Personally, I have three generations, both mine and the wife's. Including step parents, that makes four couples plus our kids in a single family house. The wife and I both work full time and then some, but that's a lot of mouths to feed.

That is because they are putting whomever applies for SSD on SSD to bankrupt the country. It is because The Federal Income Tax is a fraud.

But this is good for the economy right? RIGHT? I mean we're spending during a deficit and all that!

From the article: Robert Reischauer, head of the liberal Urban Institute, says he is not worried: "If there became an expectation that government was going to provide over half the population's well-being to a significant degree without requiring anything of the recipients, there would be reason for concern. I don't think that's where we're headed."

Although these statistics are depressing, I think we are making headway with the 401k program. Government can be useful in helping people to save for their future. Moving some of the Social Security contributions to it would be a good idea in my mind, and then do means testing. HSA's are also a great idea but the healthcare bill will probably minimize their impact, unfortunately. It's kind of the right and wrong use of government. Making us more self-sufficient through tax breaks for savings, or making us dependent with handouts.

I think we all need some govt benefits, let's see if we can get this up to 100%, We can get China to pay for it
