Whats going to happen to DiggNation.. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Did he also walk away from Revision 3 ? ahhhhhh
hackiewackieMar 18, 2011
No, not revision 3.
ekulaMar 18, 2011
He didn't and wouldn't walk away from Revision3 - I think everyone could understand why he'd leave Digg. It's only Captain's that go down with a sinking ship...
nathanloehleinMar 18, 2011
I know that previously Alex and Kevin have said they dont want to focus on stories just from digg, maybe this is the start of that.
atomic1fireMar 19, 2011
Not to mention revision 3 could have a bigger online presence.
Digg is pretty much what the users want it to be, at any given moment.
At this current point it's occasionally tech, Lots of politics, and then some funny stuff in between.
Revision 3 is probably aiming it's shows at lots of groups, as opposed to just letting people argue on the spelling of D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y or the merit of the source they just used to argue politics.

Digg is as good as dead to him (Specially after messing it up badly). May be that is just my opinion but I feel that way.
analogassassinMar 19, 2011
They definitely screwed the pooch on this one. I'm sure he could have sold it for a nice chunk but now it's basically worthless.
bs0lMar 19, 2011
Relatively speaking. If it was actually worthless, there would be no userbase and you wouldn't be commenting.
amaoicanMar 19, 2011
Depends how you define worthless. Blockbuster is worthless in the sense that their liabilities exceed their assets but people are still 'shopping' there and someone even decided to buy them.

atomic1fireMar 18, 2011
It's possible digg could carry on without Rose,
Of course, it's also possible everyone mass migrates to reddit.
Or digg get's bought by aol, and gets renamed netscape/propeller
or is bought by microsoft, and then everyone immediately calls it a sellout
Or Cnet/cbs buys it. and it isn't so terrible. (of course, it could be a huge conflict of interest)
Or yahoo buys it, and then yahoo's bad management forgets about it, or try to screw it up even worse.
News corp buying it would be Funny, but probably would be counter to it's success (everyone would call it partisan)
I really doubt they would sell that quickly though.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Can you get rid of "slow down there partner, you almost broke an axle"?
Seriously, I read quickly and can decide to digg or bury comments.
I've just been on two threads reading and those threads aren't even political and I get this message.
Is the average Digger too stupid to read at the rate the rest of us do?
richidMar 19, 2011Staff
That throttle really only affects very heavy users, such as yourself. That being said, I've experienced this once or twice and we're looking into ways to reduce it's impact for non-abusive users.

"Not to sound dramatic but this news means pretty much nothing to people working on the site."
That pretty much summarizes the decline of Digg. At some point, Kevin became Digg's Tom Anderson. I don't say that out of disrespect to him, you, or your colleagues. In fact, I think Kevin took the CEO role with sincere intentions to end a long period of product apathy. However, his vision to reinvigorate Digg was full of missteps and led a stagnant product into rapid decline and your founder lost his passion.
You and the current team are doing a great job of correcting and improving Digg 4, while playing from behind - way behind. It's hard to envision Digg reliving its glory days in th new Twitter/Facebook world of real-time aggregation. A modest turnaround is possible and you guys are giving great effort to make it happen.

I wish Kevin Rose luck on his current endeavors, but it's such a weird feeling to see founders walk away from their creations for good.
analogassassinMar 19, 2011
I guess it's depressing to think of what Digg could have been, and now it's just a shadow of its former self.
thinkboxMar 19, 2011
Most founders get ousted or leave within the first few years. Really. It even happened to steve f**king jobs. Wish I could find the article, but the statistics were shocking, something in the high 60% range are gone within the first 2 years.
imeshevMar 19, 2011
Come one. It's a miracle that he's stayed on board for so long. I'd leave immediately if I blew $200M exit.
ekulaMar 18, 2011
Fairly sure that Kevin leaving Digg will be the final nail in the coffin. Nothing like a founder losing hope in an organisation too...
bossm4nMar 19, 2011
Many founders of companies have walked away after handing the reigns over to others. This seems like nothing more than a natural progression. Plenty of staff members have already commented that this will likely have little effect on day to day operations. Digg has made a lot of progress in the last 3-4 months.
ekulaMar 19, 2011
I think it'll effect the number of users on the site. Kevin Rose has a lot of fans that I doubt will hesitate to jump ship with him.
bossm4nMar 19, 2011
I think the mass exodus is over. If anything, old users and new users are finding their way here. Kevin certainly did have a lot of fans, I've personally followed him on Digg for around five years, but I wouldn't leave the site because he resigned from his position. He's still a Digg user after all.
ekulaMar 19, 2011
Fair comment, and I hope Digg continues to recoup, but Kevin Rose has been so centric to Digg in the past, I can't see it going back to how it was.
It seems TechCrunch can't either http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/19/rip-digg/
"The company can spin it however it wants– the final nail in the coffin is news that founder Kevin Rose– long Digg’s greatest asset– is leaving."
Look at that - they even used my analogy.
sputnikeMar 18, 2011
From a business perspective, he's right to walk away. You cannot keep throwing good money after bad, and Digg did exactly what it was supposed to do... earn Kevin money, which he can invest into other projects.
From a tech industry perspective, Digg is old news, you have to try new stuff, Digg is as stable as it can be (after the upgrade anyway), he will still own shares in the company, and he doesn't want Digg holding him back.
apastafarianMar 18, 2011
Kevin, next time sell while the value's high!
nascenttMar 19, 2011
Although it pretty much would've resulting in digg becoming what it is now, sooner, if he had.
pinskiaMar 18, 2011
techcrunch == spam to me still after their stunt.
mynameisjoeMar 19, 2011
What stunt? I normally avoid clicking on all stories that come from Techcrunch.
pinskiaMar 19, 2011
Back when digg 2.0 came about, techcrunch was spamming the front page of digg.
mynameisjoeMar 19, 2011
Do you mean Digg 4.0? Digg 2.0 came online back in July of 2005 about a month after TechCrunch was founded. You can't blame them too much. When Digg switched to 4.0 the algorithm was broken. TechCrunch was just doing what they always did, but now all their articles were getting to the front page.
Regardless I avoid all articles from TechCrunch, Gawker, and the Huff Post. Those sites are much better at writing headlines than they are at writing articles. Occasionally I get sucked in by a headline, so interesting that my curiosity gets the best of me, and I am always left disappointed by the article.

I see a lot of comments and questions coming out from our community... When I took over as CEO of Digg 6 months ago, Kevin's role changed to that of Founder and Board member and nothing has changed since then. Thanks for all the positive comments we've been seeing, we're excited about our direction as well.
tdkyoMar 19, 2011
So, technically on paper, nothing has "really" changed in terms of his role of the company. Does that mean he hasn't really "resigned" unless from the position of Founder and Board member? Or was he working for Digg at another capacity? (Or the article could be just exaggerating)
Closed AccountMar 19, 2011
Listening to the community ... ALL of the community is your best bet right now. Good luck.
Closed AccountMar 19, 2011
My two cents:
I'm excited about your direction as well, as long as it is away from hiding ads in the feed with these bulls**t "sponsored links." It is infuriating and I always bury every one I see on principle. My guess is, this issue alone drove away half the users who left after v.4.
I understand the need for revenue, but fake news items in the feed only f**ks up the feed. The entire point of Digg was having a place where users filter the web - and we don't have to wade through so much bulls**t to find good information.
Since v.4, the quality of comments has gone in the toilet. The effect of the exodus was to lower the level of discourse - and this also led to increased spamming of the feed. I can tell by how many Diggs I see per story on the front page that Digg hasn't recovered. Take this story as the best indicator - Kevin f**king Rose quits Digg and the story doesn't even merit 300 diggs!? It should have at least 2,000 diggs - even if it is those techcrunch bastards.
I stayed. And I have been patient. But I don't know if Digg can be re-populated with worthwhile users. So far this year, all I've seen is a new user wave of right-wingnuts trolling the comments. And it sucks - though the community is responding.
In the end, Digg may just go the way of Myspace. But I sure as hell hope you guys can do something about the situation, because Digg is unique and we need it. Reddit sucks donkeynuts, and what's left, 4chan? Scary.
Good luck to the new team. Let's hope they can help restore the core of what makes Digg valuable - good information AND a community of users who are respected and give a s**t about making this site something worth engaging in.
And good luck to that bastard Rose - I gave him a lot of s**t after v.4, but he did something here, and I respect him for it. Hope he goes on to innovate some more.
mahlerMar 19, 2011

I also miss the quality of the comments, but I must admit: This site is now seems faster, stable prettier and more usuable than ever (even v3) The lack of users seems to be the _only_ thing missing.
ajajadudeMar 19, 2011
I find myself either arguing/discussing with the same people on each and every story or I find myself digging down a bunch of those generic, spam-like comments that some threads are full of.
enantiodromiaMar 21, 2011
Agreed.
The UI and general experience of the front page is better, when the axels don't break.
The Comments section is now miserable, as the spammers and trolls have learned to manipulate the system.
I have yet to see one comment from Digg about this problem, so either they are working on a way to deal with this, or they are totally ignoring it.
Not knowing however, is what will continue to drive away long time users.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Kevin is a product and community genius. No one in the technology space can get 5,000 people to come talk about 10 random links like he did effortlessly last week at SXSW.
Even with the stumble, digg is a great site with potential. It's up to the current team to unlock that potential and stop thinking about Kevin. That's how he would want it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Hi Jason,
You got digg analysis wrong when v4 was introduced on TWIST. You're scorn on those who warned was medieval.
You blindly stood by your peep when what he (and the site) actually needed was vision, knowledge and truthful diagnosis.
V4 was a complete disaster and blaming it on the non existing angry few from the community, was a total cop out.

If kevin was smart he would invest in a hardware/software company, the internet is way to fleeting for any real substantial investment, Even giants like Google can change at a whim. competition is fierce and people's interests are too fickle to produce any kind of lasting phenomenon.

1. In all honesty, its not that ugly. Just because its missing zomg, shadows and rounded corners doesnt mean its ugly. 2. The sheer variety of "communities" is unbeatable. 3. The community there is incredible. I've been with digg for many years (I even got on an early diggnation!). But it just cannot compare to reddit.
omarbonillaMar 19, 2011
1. There's always Stylish (Firefox or Chrome) if you really can't stand how it looks.
2. It's not really about the design. You go there, find your links, get to the comments, and get out. If you take the time to dig through the subreddits to find the quality, in-depth ones (as well as some other fun ones) you can get a great experience there.
Either way it all comes down to personal preference. I'd like to bring over a popular, tongue-in-cheek comment from there just for times like these:
"HOW DARE YOU LIKE WHAT I DON'T LIKE!"
Go with what you like. Ignore what you don't. Enjoy life.
