Lady Gaga as number 3...
tridisDec 14, 2010
yea wtf is wrong with people?
frombeyondDec 14, 2010
I know, she should be number 1
stockjonesDec 14, 2010
Well we (The US) haven't ranked near bottom in education for nothing.
bobthegreat1224Dec 14, 2010
Mind qualifying that statement a bit, please? Near the bottom of what sample of the population? Are we below England, France, China, and Russia, or are we below Somalia, Sierra Leone, Haiti, and the Congo?
kinserDec 14, 2010
We are behind china and thats bad enough don't you think?
megamodDec 14, 2010
doesn't make it any better that Glenn Beck got 5th right after John Steward.
kathyg64Dec 14, 2010
nominations now open for Australian of the Year - does Julian have a chance?
Imagine Julia Gillard presenting the award to him on Australia Day ..
deepskydiverDec 14, 2010
I'm pretty sure the *US* Administration wouldn't let that happen.. :)
hipmanDec 14, 2010
So it's a popularity contest?.
davidtcDec 14, 2010
If that was the case, I don't think Recep Tayyip Ergodan would be on the list, let alone #2
bdbrDec 14, 2010
In the case of Readers' Choice, yes...because you don't even have to be a reader.
deepskydiverDec 14, 2010
Isn't the Presidency?
Closed AccountDec 14, 2010
It's high school all over again! NOoooooOOOoo
phillaholicDec 14, 2010
It's not suppose to be a the best person of the year, it's suppose to be the biggest impact player of the year. I feel Mr. Assange fits that roll perfectly.
melthornalDec 14, 2010
So yeah, its a popularity contest. This is how it goes: "Who do you remember from this year, news wise?" Then you take a record of what people say. Popularity contest.
adaguyDec 14, 2010
I can recall when it was the Ayatollah. Do you think he won out of popularity?
skeeordyeDec 14, 2010
you don't have to be liked to be popular
davidtcDec 14, 2010
Both Palin and Beck had more votes than Obama? Waits for the rage to commence...
For some reason I think this would be discredited by the left if Assange didn't win for the reason above, but with the person who should be #1 getting #1 I think it would be hard to say.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bdbrDec 14, 2010
It was being gamed by the left in favor of of Assange and Ergodan, there's no reason to think it wasn't being gamed on the right in favor of Palin & Beck. The left just happens to be better-represented on the Internet.
tsuruchibrianDec 14, 2010
Why aren't people on the right supporting Assange as well?
I thought conservatives believed in freedom of the press because it is in the constitution.
ncmusicDec 14, 2010
No when you criticize someone you are violating their freedom of speech.
myztryDec 14, 2010
He can't exactly publish the truth AND compliment them, can he?
Closed AccountDec 14, 2010
A number of people on the right ARE supporting him. The libertarians in particular.
tsuruchibrianDec 14, 2010
As a libertarian myself, II don't really consider libertarians to be on the "right".
I don't find the labels of right and left to be very applicable beyond the 2 mainstream parties. (i.e. left = democrat, right = republican).
I find it kind of odd to consider the question of whether libertarians (small L) are more democrat or republican. It's a bit like asking if a submarine is closer to a Ford truck or a Chevy truck.
Closed AccountDec 14, 2010
Libertarians frequently get lumped in on the right, and yes it's a bit sad considering there are views expressed by both sides.
daimposterDec 14, 2010
unfortunately, most so called libertarian are conservative when it comes to social matters...thus they are labeled as being right wing.
true libertarians would be closer to left wing on social matters and right wing on government/business matters
quisquisDec 14, 2010
I'm on the "right" if you will, and I support him.
adaguyDec 14, 2010
Same here.
torchednoodleDec 14, 2010
I'm on the left and I think he's an egotistical sack of dog s**t.
anakastDec 14, 2010
It's not a left/right thing, I support him as a conservative, support for him depends on view of the government, not whether you're liberal or conservative.
kinserDec 14, 2010
Correct sir! Everyone, despite political views, should want the truth out there for everyone to see. Even if it shines on their party in a bad light.
danconiaDec 14, 2010
LOL You actually thought they cared about Freedom of the Press? I'm surprised the hot air they blow out convinces anyone...
;)
jamestownfinestDec 14, 2010
As a member of the "right", I very much support this. I think that 99% of the time, increased transparency on the gov't's part is a good thing.
DaddyGeeDec 15, 2010
Because we can't run a defense with a complete open transparency. Check up[ on all the encryption tactics used in WWII.
tsuruchibrianDec 15, 2010
Wikileaks does not provide complete transparency.
1. The people leaking to wikileaks are not leaking information for the purpose of damaging our security. They are leaking information when they feel our government is wrong.
2. The actual Wikileaks organization will not publicize information it receives that it deems to be damaging to national security. They spend a lot of time analyzing the information before releasing it.
Maybe you think the whistle-blowers and Assange are not the best people to decide what is and is not damaging to national security. That may be true, but I don;t trust the government to police itself. They have proven time and time again that they have no problems covering up their own corruption and incompetence.
DaddyGeeDec 15, 2010
From what I understand he was trying to twist our arm so that we would take on Iran's Nuke program. Well, even though I am conservative I think we've got our hands full right now. But some guy like that should not be honored for trying to extort us in our policies. He is a hacker, from what I understand. He is a head of hackers and got much of his info by illegal means. Then treat him like the criminal that he is. He is not like Woodward.
tsuruchibrianDec 15, 2010
@DaddyGee
I am completely unfamiliar with the accusation against wikileaks in regards to Iran's Nuclear program that you are referring to. If you can cite a source, I will certainly read it.
I am aware that several of the leaks were released to wikileaks illegally. I am not aware of any evidence that the wikileaks organization using hacking to get illegal information.
I think rather than saying "people who do illegal things should be treated like criminals", it is more important to discuss whether those activities should be illegal in the first place.
Our laws should reflect society's collective morality.
Our morality should not follow our laws. (i.e. basket weaving would not become immoral if it were made illegal tomorrow). We can change our society's laws if we want to. In fact, our laws are constantly being changed, and reinterpreted for situations not considered during the inception of those laws.

Hitler won in '38. How smartly do people vote?
melthornalDec 14, 2010
Hitler was easily the most deserving person to have ever won person of the year. He touched the lives, directly or indirectly, of pretty much everyone on two and a half continents. And in a huge way. If you want to link the war in the Pacific to Hitler, thats four and a half continents.
stockjonesDec 14, 2010
People that read the news tend to be more conservative. People who vote for Lady Gaga on facebook tend to be more liberal.... Oooops did I say that.
elranzerDec 14, 2010
If by "news" you mean Murdoch's rag tabloids like the NY Post and watching Fox "News" then yeah. And liberals tend to be more college-educated than conservatives. Don't ever try to classify conservatives as the smarter of the two groups.
momsshizzleDec 14, 2010
You you mean they read Digg?
kinserDec 14, 2010
Not the brightest crayon in the box are you?
Closed AccountDec 14, 2010
Actually, those who get their news from Television tend to be conservative, and they rarely if ever check sources. This would explain the popularity of FOX *news" Entertainment.

You don't find him a Person of the Year? He's kind of important. Effecting the way the human race interacts with one another is kind of a big deal.
sloppyjoes7Dec 14, 2010
The "Person of the Year" is not an award. Hitler won it, for example.
It is simply recognition of someone who was very influential that year.
momsshizzleDec 14, 2010
Yea, but Hitler did more good than Julian did.
kinserDec 14, 2010
You're completely absurd.

Before I proceed with my post, I will have to filter out all the epithets and violent thoughts I wish would befall you for your statement.
Now then, Can you give me a list of what good Hitler did, or are you content in the purely provocative statement indicative in someone whom has serious sociopathic issues?
Have a nice f**king day you piece of s**t. <-- slipped past the filter.

I finally took a closer look at your avatar, 'cause I like your style. Merely attempting to control the rage... Let's just say that what you write is enough to have people following you. The mini Icon may be dragging against your sails.
This makes me happy, in that I can now follow you.
ds420Dec 15, 2010
If it is not an award to be titled person of the year, then what is it? This type of recognition would surely fall under the category of an award, would it not? When Hitler won he had the support of American business and government, America remained neutral for years. There were many big name American companies doing business with the Nazis, hell even Prescott Bush had his assets seized in 1945 under the trading with the enemy act. His son and grandson both ended up as president.
rethreadDec 15, 2010
Hmmm, I'll just guess. A tribute to truth and honesty everywhere. Kinda like http://improveverywhere.com/
Let's just shoot on Hitler and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law and move on. I think there's a http://moveon.org
Then there is http://moveon.org/
Hitler is dead, and we should pay attention to that. Just saying.
pethanksDec 14, 2010
Well, that is the people's choice. That is their decision.
kazmierczaksmDec 14, 2010
People must have some horrible lives to vote a sexual predator, "Person of the Year."
Digg down away!
Also once again, people of United States of America, receiving and disseminating stolen property is not synonymous with freedom of speech.
BahhhhhhhComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
melthornalDec 14, 2010
Person of the year isn't a prize, it is supposed to represent the individual who changed the world the most. The person who influenced the most people.
Remember how Hitler won in 1938? Stalin won 1939 and 1942..
It all pretty much became a joke when "US Scientists" won in 1960 and "The middle Americans" in 1969.
Oh, and can't forget "The Computer" and my personal favorite "You." f**king hell, did NOTHING happen in 2006?
joe7845Dec 14, 2010
He's not even *charged* with being a sexual predator. He's not charged with anything. He's a *suspect* in a "sex by surprise" investigation.
Try not to play judge and jury on the internet.

You must be a FOX *news* watcher! Let's go down the list of requirements...
- Dumb as a brick
- Accepts what they are spoon fed without thought
- Bases their opinions on little or no contemplation
- Was probably raised by bigot(s)
- Is definitely sexually repressing something
Any three of these qualifies you.
Baahhhhhhh <---- you sounding off like the sheep you are.
stockjonesDec 14, 2010
lol Glenn Beck is above Steve Jobs.
kinserDec 14, 2010
Beck fans were gaming the polls or he wouldn't even be in the ranking I don't believe. He's changed nothing in this world he really does not even deserve the votes he got.

Glenn Beck is on Television, and most of the Facebookers are also those tards that play Farmville and are Republicans.
How is it you are surprised again?
mcpeepants9191Dec 14, 2010
But Assange wasn't the winner in all aspects - Lady Gaga trounced him on Facebook, receiving 65,417 "likes" on Facebook to Assange's 45,643

hanzoDec 14, 2010
Wow… The standards for being person of the year must be really low. All Julian Assange did was post someone else's property on his website. Big whoop. Any assh**e could do what he did. If you're impressed by that then The Pirate Bay should be Person of the Decade.
I'm not against Julian Assange. But really, he's no "hero" for free speech. He's just some guy with a web server. Stop trying to turn him into something more spectacular. Person of the Year? pppbbbrrr…. I think the American middle class should be Person of the Year for what they've gone through this past year.

kingofshadows92Dec 15, 2010
I don't mean to hate, even though some of you might not believe me. But how does this man become person of the year? Yeah, you can argue "He gave the world the truth!", but as an American citizen, you should know that there are secrets worth hiding. Hillary Clinton spying on the UK should not have been leaked, just like other Department secrets. It's a matter of national security.
pppmktDec 15, 2010
Have you heard about a book called 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man'?
It's suggested reading for all citizens, anywhere. We should hide THAT.
