What you wingnuts don’t realize is without the stimulus, unemployment would be like a million percent right now.
While we're on the subject of poverty, instead of wasting a trillion dollars on a stimulus that doesn't work, a trillion bucks could buy a s**tload of Habitat for Humanity houses, food and clothing.
It is the dead hand of the state that is the cause of poverty. It is massive government involvement in economic activity that prevents or inhibits a society from becoming wealthy. The heavier the hand of government, the poorer people will be. People are poorer in Mexico than they are in the United States. They are poorer in North Korea than those in Mexico. The dead hand of the state is more prevalent in Mexico, but North Korea more than it is in Mexico.
And before everyone starts blaming the other party, let me say right now that they both suck. But the degree is important.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

What you damn liberals don't understand is that if we just had no government at all, the corporations would just take care of us, and the free market would ensure that everyone who worked would become a millionaire and get to retire at age 30.
Actually, your take on the situation is not quite correct alan. Check out this chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Income_Taxes_By_Country.svg
By your logic, the countries with the heaviest tax burden should be the most impoverished, but they are not. Mexico to contrast is light on taxes, the government does little in terms of social safety nets, and their people are far poorer and the wealth inequity far higher than in the US.
There are some things that that evil government and only that damn evil government can do to help it's people: such as public roads, parks, hospitals, and schools. If left to the forces of unregulated capitalism, America would become Somalia.

Excellent interactive map.

It's an OK map. It would be better as a Google Earth .kml file that would allow us to visualize the poverty data while seeing the political boundaries, terrain, and other factors that might be part of the problem.

Here is a web page that uses the Google Earth plugin to show http://maplify.com/census/ rates of census participation. When you are zoomed out it shows data at the state level. Zoom part way in and you see data at the county level. Zoom in more and you see data at the city level. If you use the page's link to a kml file, you can load the data into Google Earth where you can combine it with other data layers and really study the problem.
(Here is a page that explains the data processing that went into the page I just mentioned
http://innovationlandscape.com/case-studies/cencus-bureau-take10-map-for-2010/ )
Now that's a brilliant map.

To bad Congress Person Tom McClintock of CA-04 District voted to kill further funding so folks lost jobs and employers lost good staff on September 30, 2910. He is a Rookie congressperson with almost 1 1/2 million dollars in the bank for his re-election campaign. Gotta change something!
