FTA: "We can also take comfort from the fact that most of the Internet's giants profess an awareness of their awesome powers and some sense of attendant duty to the public."
Let us hope so.

What a dumb article. Other than Facebook and Google, a very big portion of people would have NO problem giving up the others for a week. Most people...other than those that use it as a business...often go a week between Ebay purchases. same with Amazon. And Skype? Please...it is hte market leader of a small market. Apple? Huh? Even those with iPods/iPhones don't go to Apple (even iTunes) on a daily basis. Even Google wouldn't be missed if it was forced on someone. It is not like smeone using Bing or Yahoo is going to not find what they are looking for.

Yeah, I mean it is just a search engine, regardless of how good of one.I'll switch in an instant.

s**t, I've used eBay four times this year and Amazon once, I don't have Facebook and Twitter, well, I registered once in 2008 and haven't logged back in since.
Granted I use Google's services multiple times a day: Android phone, Gmail, Google Calendar, Sync (on the second phone--blackberry), Google Search, Google Docs, Analytics, Checkout, Google Voice. s**t, I use Google too much, I don't know if I could go a week without Google.

Be strong and steadfast without the grip of digital enslavement. Try to go with minimal digital reliance and your binary addiction will transform back into your humanity.

Facebook?
Really people? Can you just go back to visit your friends once in a while?
Send e-mails, use an IM or just grab the phone and call?
About Google, well I guess we'd have to give another search engine a try to know for sure.

This is not a 'dumb article' what planet are you on? The people who've commented with 'i dont use such and such' - you are now the minority. The article was trying to highlight the importance of understanding that the businesses/networks listed are cemented as leaders/monopolists of the internet. It did not state you had to use them all simultaneously. Sure you could dump Google for Bing, but you're kidding yourself if you're trying to convince anyone that its even REMOTELY equivocal to Google. And you dont NEED to use a social network, but like the article states, you are foregoing an entire host of activities, including marketing strategy, business tools and the like in doing so. Get your head out of the sand.

It's almost mind boggling to think of how much these "monopolies" not only rule, but actually dictate the way that people, in majority, live. A life without Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Ebay - is a simple life, but one that I personally, would not like to give up. We have all become information hungry, and now, thanks to these monopolies, we all have the opportunity to access all information at the tip of our fingers.

How to use the internet to define and shape one's interest seems to me to be the real key point here, like how to take my university course studies in English – PreLaw – Finance – MIS with a focus towards Library Science - and shaping it into a viable and sustainable social network; following some of the examples from the Internet Monopolists like in this article. I’m guessing it’s about developing each one, and interlinking them to some extent. Please feel free to leave a comment.
