Sad this has to happen, but gotta do whatever it takes to get Digg back afloat. Does this mean longer wait on returning features? I think I speak for most active users here when I say that I believe Digg can come back and I want Digg to come back. ETA on bury button?
richidOct 26, 2010Staff
Speaking more as a long-time Digg user than as an employee, I share your sentiment with regard to getting back on track. We lost a lot of passionate, talented people today but that does not distinguish our desire to build a better product.
The bury button is coming back, but I can not offer anything besides a "soon-ish" timeframe.

What? It's true.
vdoogsOct 26, 2010
If you hate this site so much, why the hell are you still here? Also, I can't say I'm surprised (because you've done this kind of thing in the past), but you're being offensive just for the sake of being offensive. You're acting like that one lady in Michigan who dropped coffins on the front yard of the 7 yr old with cancer because it "rubs [her grandmother and the 7 yr olds] assh**es raw".
Reported.
vdoogsOct 26, 2010
Also, you're being TERRIBLY insensitive. Rich here is giving us valuable information, and either has just lost his job or has realized his job is possibly in jeopardy. And if his job is in jeopardy, it is possible that other Digg staff will take his information sharing here the wrong way.
But you respond to his help by calling him "a giant failwagon". What the hell is wrong with you quirk?
ctnpOct 27, 2010
"What? It's true."
I think he's saying the company went brainkrupt and made stupid decisions that killed the site.
Having lived through failed startups its a common feeling. It dulls over time.

Don't mind quirk. She's off her meds today. When her scripts come in the mail at the end of the week she'll go back to "nice sweet old lady quirk" for a few days.

@The bury button is coming back, but I can not offer anything besides a "soon-ish" timeframe.
You guys just don't get it.
It's not about "fixes", "bugs" or "the bury button", it's about the fundamental changes that have taken place here. Digg has gone from a website where millions of people read, post and vote on interesting/comments to a dead site filled with crap articles from major media conglomerate sites like time, engadget, mashable, techcrunch, etc.
Long gone are the days of user driven content (which drove this site) now its just content driven content.
Despite the dip in revenue, the layoffs and the decline in traffic, the "people" running this site continue to try and force these changes on users forgetting that people don't *need* digg like they need a phone, electricity or fuel also there are so many alternative sites like it.
No matter how much lipstick you put on this pig you're still going to lose. Sadly the people laid off could lose their SAVINGS, HOMES, APARTMENTS and CARS all thanks to Kevin Rose and the hacks running this site into the ground.
I hope you have your resume ready "Rich".

Well, I honestly appreciate the concern but I am still employed here at Digg. My comments last night were facetious and the result of drinking whiskey with a bunch of friends who recently lost their jobs. In hindsight, they were not productive and only served to feed the trolls.
Again though, thanks.

You DON'T speak for most users when you say they think they will come back. Remember...they were given an ultimatum by the people that make the site possible. (Since they don't make enough money to stay afloat on their own.) And that ultimatum was "Show us a profit NOW" And not only are they not doing that, but it is becoming more and more obvious that that will NEVER happen.
So, they are running out of time and money to turn things around, and too much of hte comunity left to come back any time soon. ESPECIALLY since some that may have given it a second chance after amonth or so come back to the same s**t that was happening in early September. The site is STILL broken half the time...after over two f**king months!
No site that allows itself to be broken for almost 10% of a year deserves to be given a second chance.
vdoogsOct 26, 2010
Keep drinkin' that haterade... Why are YOU still here?
Closed AccountOct 26, 2010
Why are you still here? No matter what you do, Kevin Rose will NEVER let you suck his c**k.
What did I say that was hateful? All I said was simple facts. You just chose to live in fantasyland. But let's examine what I said:
1. Investors are sick and tired of shelling out millions to a 6 year old site that has never turned a profit and has not shown signs of knowing how to do so. - TRUE
2. Investors gave Digg an ultimatum earlier this year to turn things around. Supposedly they had just a few months to do so. - Rumor, but from reliable sources
3. Digg not only didn't turn things arond, but they LOST revenue - FACT
4. That ultimatum still holds true - TRUE.
5. The site IS still broken after 9 weeks now. And there is no reason to beleive it will be fixed any time soon. So 10% of the year. And I am not talking abut hte bury button or the spam. I am talking simply about when you click a link on Digg, at least 1/3 of the time you are not going to be taken to the page you want. Imagine ANY other top 100 site allowing itself to be down for that long. It is unfathomable. - FACT

sickswaystopOct 25, 2010
Dude that sucks, I see his point though.. like most start-ups, Digg should be focusing on the quality, not quantity of their employees. Most of Digg's real top talent left earlier this year (or last year) to work for new companies starting with Daniel Burka.
You can honestly feel the difference too, the original Digg team is dis-banded. Anyone else notice that the Digg button has never been the same since Dburka left? It's like Digg doesn't know what it is anymore.
confuciussayOct 25, 2010
I feel sorry for all the Digg staff that have to go. Am sure many of them put a lot of effort & dedication into Digg and are simply soldiers exposed by wrong decisions from the top. When V4 went live, it didn't take an analyst or data cruncher to determine that it was destined to fail.. it was simple common sense. Digg had something good.. like a historic building, sometimes it only needs a licker of paint around the edges and some minor enhancements to maintain it's opulence whilst still drawing large crowds..not by tearing the whole thing down & try to rebuild it from scratch... it loses it's value.. and people see it for what it is, a fake .
toksterjoksterOct 26, 2010
I never like to see anyone lose their jobs. It is the nature of the time though. Everyone is losing jobs out here these days.
I may be the only one but I feel optimistic about the future of digg. All of you are complaining but you are still on the site checking stuff out and a whole new generation of diggers will come. It may never be the same as it was but that is the nature of social media in general. You just have to roll with the punches and keep it moving. Happy trails to the diggers who lost their jobs. Hope you land well.

@I never like to see anyone lose their jobs. It is the nature of the time though. Everyone is losing jobs out here these days.
Yes thanks to the wonderful changes that have taken place dozens of people could lose their homes, apartments, savings, cars, etc but hey... "You just have to roll with the punches and keep it moving".

Yes,.. a website that depends on it's viewers actually wanting to go there. I support you Digg. You made some major errors with the New Digg, but you seem to be responding with positive changes.
uv0001Oct 27, 2010
Positive changes, maybe. It still won't really make a difference in what the final outcome of the site will be. It's too far gone now. Almost all the users that made the site what it was in it's prime have all left.
trublmakrOct 27, 2010
I support Digg too,.. but your positive change perception is a delusion... a positive change would be adding some infrastructure stability and putting back the old features users appreciated,.. so far I've seen neither - just hollow promises.
greymoonOct 26, 2010
"When I joined Digg six weeks ago, we set an immediate focus on improving the web site."
Sometimes just doing something because you can isn't wise. Losing 90% of the readership isn't "improvement" no matter how much you wish it to be. Digg needs wisdom not marketing catch phrases that accomplish nothing.
That is all.
grafenbergOct 26, 2010
Bringing back the bury button should be the top priority. Content sucks these days, it's like every little thing posted by a big blog gets to the home page. Let the people decide what is quality content, wasn't that the idea that spawned digg in the first place and made it so successful and fun?
And do away with the 'my page' news. Digg is not an rss reader. The comments section is completely dead now since users aren't hitting the top content, but only what the people they "follow" are posting.
And while you're all gung-ho about pushing digg as a business, don't forget what made you successful in the first place, your users. Keep us happy (we are your publishers) and you will thrive as a business.
It's like the power user problem wasn't big enough already, you took the power from the people and put it in the hands of a hand full of publishers.
Closed AccountOct 26, 2010
Digg forgot its community...also, its community wanted content to be free...no bothersome ads.
And there was the network of liberal bloggers. Really, if you haven't yet...you need to see this network...
http://p2blogs.com/p2blogs-family/
I didn't even realize the full BOONDOGGLE until a couple of months ago.
These are "progressive" bloggers and you will recognize Digg names sometimes. Anomaly100 is FreakOutNation. Mercypolitics and Novenator are Newsjunkiepost. Jordanwhatever is The Public Record. Rmuse writes for the p2blogs...I'm sure I missed many. Also, they work so hand in hand that you KNOW that there is a place where they communicate privately.
Their blogs generally consist of a news item which has been submitted to Digg from the ACTUAL source...and that item has been discussed and discussed. And then they link to a source and say, "THIS is terrible...those horrible Republicans are evil..." and then they link to all their other buddies' blogs.
All these liberals have been posting their content to Digg...and they are an incestuous band of back-slappers.
I know of NO CONSERVATIVE equivalent. There is NO conservative blogging group that spams their multi-blog content to Digg.
This evil spider's web of liberal blogs went on the attack on conservatives on Digg.
Their own stories contradict each other. The comments they make in threads contradict their stories. It's laughable.
Their leader "Novenator" has repeatedly accused people posting conservative of being in the group he "exposed".
He has attacked conservatives on Digg in GENERAL...even saying, "You should confess...you know I know anyway"...when he doesn't know s**t.
I short, they like Blinker...and Blinker only. I think Blinker whores content.
Digg has killed Digg. No conservatives killed Digg. Did put a gun to its front page and pulled the trigger. Then Digg made it impossible to follow activity. Digg killed Digg. I feel bad for the employees let go and hope they find another home.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

netchickenOct 26, 2010
How about addressing this important development Digg?
Digg creating fake users to vote up publishers content, which is defrauding the publishers if they are paying for viewers.
http://digg.com/news/technology/did_digg_game_its_own_system_to_benefit_publisher_partners
grafenbergOct 26, 2010
don't you think that's kinda a stretch? would digg really need to create fake accounts? Sounds more like the publishers themselves creating fake accounts and fake digging. If I make 20 accounts and digg the top 20 sites that push content to digg, AND digg my own website, I'll stand a better chance of making it to the home page than if I only dugg my own site, since that looks suspicious.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rooperOct 26, 2010
Did you read the article? The diggs were spread out across a number of users, and the only commonality between the domains involved is that they're all "preferred publishers".
Those publishers don't have much in common between them (apart from the Digg connection). So, unless they all got together and said "Guise! We're all Digg preferred publishers, right? Okay, so let's spam Digg! It'll be great" (which I really can't see happening) I'm struggling to see any explanation other than Digg themselves are involved somehow.
It *could* possibly be someone external (Possibly even LtGenPanda) trying to give the *impression* that Digg are up to no good, but that begs even more questions. Like why (several hours later) have they not said anything about it, and why didn't their famous "algo" pick this up before now?
Closed AccountOct 26, 2010
I saw the article. and there is ZERO eviecnce that it is Digg doing this. FAR more likely is that one of LtGenPAnda's circlejerk buddies got the bright idea before he did to do it themselves, and charge the publisher sites to use them. That is FAR more likely.
Again...GenPanda is just a little bitch who is now unemployed and has a HUGE gap on his resume and is scared s**tless.

He uncovered NOTHING new. This is not Digg creaeting these acconts. It is the publshers doing it. Like they have ALWAYS done. Or at least have done for the last 3-4 years.
As grafenberg said, why would Digg need to do this? With no list of Who Dugg This, they could have simply inflated the number of diggs a story gets without bothering to create an account to do so.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
al3efromanOct 27, 2010
So you belittle people suggesting it was Digg themselves because they present "ZERO evidence", but everyone should swallow you're unsupported theories. Hypocrite much?
The article by ltgenpanda goes out of its way to point what is fact vs. opinion. You, however, insult people who discuss that possibility by questioning their intelligence. Then, you spout off your unsubstantiated hypothesis without any such disclaimer. Can you explain why it is we should blindly follow your lead while questioning everyone else?
Watching trolls used to be fun. You, however, are just lazy and boring. Way to lower the bar.

@Matt Williams, let me make it easier for you.
Just announce that we're changing the site back to digg v3 effective today and then start working on porting some of the good features (new UI etc) of the new site back into digg v3.
This way, you'll be able to win back users trust quickly and will give you enough time to focus on ideas to make digg more popular.
davelogOct 26, 2010
I think the damage that's been done is irreversible. Even if they could roll back - and they've stated often that it was a ratcheted upgrade, so no rollback is possible - the community which drove the site to popularity is long gone.
You can't go home again.
almostevilOct 26, 2010
Honestly, I am not surprised. Ever since v4 hit digg has been a total disappointment, I've had a digg account for a fair few years but the last few months I've pretty much migrated totally to reddit.
And looking at traffic results I am not the only one.
There are a great many reasons why I finally moved over, from the constant oregon trail error message to lots of little things. For an example of a little thing, my user name; when I created this account it was "AlmostEvil", now it is "almostevil" I reported this and got a response that it would be fixed soon months ago.
If digg can't even fix a simple user name case issue then how in the hell can they fix serious issues?
freelogoanimsOct 26, 2010

In the back of my mind I keep remembering the proclamation that repairs/changes could not be made quick enough because of the small staff. Now it is being reduced. This makes it the 2nd sign of a sinking vessel. Bottom lines are important but when they are made at the expense of the product it spells disaster. My time has diminished on digg as well as the people I used to follow. We are witnessing the slow collapse of a once great site. I will stay around and watch because of nostalgia but not with much hope.
