I tell you what its not so simple to get to the front page..........
igorunchainedJan 24, 2012
Ive a member of Digg since April of 07 and have never gotten more than 5 Diggs on a story I've submitted. From world news to pop culture...from technology to sports...never more than 5 Diggs. If it wasnt a popularity contest, it would be a better site/algorithm.
bdbrJan 24, 2012
I got 87 once (a fluke perhaps), but the others never got more than 4. It's a waste of time for normal Diggers like us to submit anything.
wizwearincJan 25, 2012
dont be so negative
favuquadJan 25, 2012
I digged you down lol
alanocuJan 24, 2012
I went to your latest sub today and gave you a thumbs up. You now have 8 Diggs on that story.
Popularity contest it is not, but people who are very *social* make the best progress. You got my attention, and others will notice because you commented (were social).
Take care of your mutual friends on Digg. They should be priority before you. Make sure you Digg all of their subs, add a comment on occasion and more importantly, find mutual friends who do the same for you.
If you want to be on the front page of Digg, you have to do more than drop your own link then leave. You have to stay awhile. Social networks.
igorunchainedJan 25, 2012
Alan...been around long enough to know you by name/avatar. We dont agree on much, but I appreciate your time and advice where this subject is concerned....truly means a lot.
alanocuJan 26, 2012
Thank you for the reply and congrats to you! You hit a homerun! 372 diggs on your sub!
Your time was long overdue. Really happy for you and looking forward to seeing you on the front page again soon.
If we all agreed with each other, Digg would be a boring place. And I don't do *boring*. But I am a very loyal friend and I'd give the shirt off of my back to help someone out if they needed it.
Best of luck to you.
igorunchainedJan 26, 2012
Much appreciated, Alan. I am more of a "commenter" than a "Submitter", so I actually enjoy the disagreement quite a bit. As for making the front page, I gave up on ever doing that a long time ago....it makes my "home run" feel that much better. Thanks to you and all involved.
DiggfulJan 25, 2012
"Take care of your mutual friends on Digg. They should be priority before you. Make sure you Digg all of their subs, add a comment on occasion and more importantly, find mutual friends who do the same for you."
That's a great way to game the system. Thanks for the tips.
funaholicinfoJan 25, 2012
Absolutely, the more real friends you get the better!
daimposterJan 25, 2012
"Popularity contest it is not, but people who are very *social* make the best progress."
Sounds like a popularity contest. I thought the most interesting submission would get the front page.....not who has the most friends.
trishahoffmanJan 26, 2012
But then again, such is real life as well..There are plenty f great journalists and writers out there, but it's the talking heads that get all the attention
asfinktersezwutJan 26, 2012
The cognitive dissonance is strong in that one.
rossjohnson87Jan 26, 2012
I get dugg with a little help from my friends
paintballer747Jan 25, 2012
Agreed.
This is one thing Reddit does have over Digg. The algorithm they use makes it much easier to get a top story.
jceezJan 25, 2012
b/c 100 users contribute 56% of homepage content.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/top-100-digg-users-control-56-of-diggs-homepage-content
This is the main reason I use Digg much less these days and use sites like reddit, delicious more.

gameondiggerJan 25, 2012
Digg.com is going up and up. There are no two ways about that. Diggs and comments are on the rise. I have always been digging the gaming channel since the day I joined digg. But recently I have to say that 'only' corporate sites are popping in digg/gaming. One look over here: http://digg.com/news/gaming/media/recent and you will know what I am talking about.
Personally I dont have anything against these sites, but digg/gaming could do much better with variation in sources.
dajobeJan 25, 2012Staff
I don't know what 'corporate sites' means but you can submit any site you like. If people like it, then it gets diggs.
Macintrash64Jan 26, 2012
Sites like ign, 1up, etc. rule the gaming channels while smaller sites have more difficulty.
I run my own gaming site and I know it has trouble making it to the FP even when it has 90 diggs, at least 5 comments, and nearly 300 views. Bigger sites seem to be able to make the front with noticeably less.
grymusJan 25, 2012
"Digg.com is going up and up. There are no two ways about that"
You should take your meds.
Digg has been trending downward for at least a year now while "Reddit Surpasses 1 Billion Monthly Pageviews"

daimposterJan 25, 2012
3 or 4 years ago, the news and media would mention Digg. Now they mention Reddit.
bossm4nJan 25, 2012
You make great points. Let me try to help you out by addressing the issue that Jerry doesn't hit on. No offense to Jerry, he makes good suggestions about people who actually curate their own content, but it doesn't apply to the majority of folks on most social networks.
The elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about is how Digg f**ked up when they removed the sharing feature. They followed that up with a series of other maneuvers that didn't allow you to follow friends or their submissions or find pretty much anything else that was submitted. Which meant users had to find other ways to hook up with their friends, fans, followers, or whatever.
Their latest solution, Newsrooms and the Newswire are actually pretty damn good. And you can still find submissions from others via other Digg options, but for the most part, I don't think the majority of diggers use them to find things to digg because they are locked in to the other options that were the fallback after shares were taken away.
And Digg staffers, while they think they're doing the right thing by making something like this a "hot story" or "staff pick" just don't seem to get it. While it's nice to see some truly hot stories once in a while, most of the time we see the same diggers have their submissions tagged as staff picks, i.e., Dirtyfries, Geek22, Antdude and a few others. Not that those guys don't put up great content, but come on. I realize you guys can't be 100% with your staff picks, but literally every day you pick something that has already been promoted to the front page. The icing on the cake was that gem from yesterday that the Goldnsilver spammer submitted that was over two years old and had hit the front page back in 2009. It had over 5,000 diggs and almost 500 comments, yet someone thought it a "hot story". Hell, I think I was the first one to post the story the other day when Sarah Burke died. Was it chosen as a staff pick or hot story? Hell no. That story wasn't even promoted. Instead another one hit about two days later.
With Digg's latest blog update, they now say that promoting your submissions via Facebook, Twitter, and Linked is more valuable to the success of the submission than ever before, most of us are wandering around truly scratching our heads.
The best advice I can offer to you and others is to continue to submit good content or whatever you find interesting or newsworthy, drop comments when you can (yes I know that doesn't mean much anymore) and start tweeting out your submissions and/or posting them to Facebook. Digg made that pretty effortless by adding those buttons right on your submission. Start looking for other active diggers to follow on Twitter and Facebook.
I wish you all the success in the world. I certainly want to see more and more new users having success on Digg (not you asshat spammers who keep getting banned and create new accounts). I would love to see Digg get back some of the folks who left after v4 launched or just have folks like you who have been around for a while and don't get promoted have more success.
igorunchainedJan 25, 2012
Thanks alot Bossm4n! I never was one to "share" stories, but decided to participate in the new Newsrooms. I have found Newsrooms to be much better than I had anticipated, primarily because of the amount of good content that lingers around the low double-digits. Again, I appreciate the great response and worthwhile advice!
thoughtsonthisJan 25, 2012
And worthwhile advice it was. Thank you Bossm4n.
bossm4nJan 25, 2012
BTW, congrats on getting your first front page promotion with that Google story. I hope it's the first of many.
igorunchainedJan 26, 2012
Was blown away to wake up to that today (especially after never getting over 5 Diggs on a submission). Thanks again, Bossm4n.
anomaly100Jan 25, 2012
It would help users connect if Subdigger was back IMO.
bossm4nJan 25, 2012
From what I gathered from all the API fans, Digg all but abandoned API support after the v4 launch. Which is why there are no cool things like Subdigger anymore.
jeremyduenasJan 25, 2012
v4 is why we don't have a lot of things. such as a large community.
talkateeJan 25, 2012
Great post! attractive title attract more people to read the article.. nice one!
vitriolandangstJan 25, 2012
Good advice only;
>> I find Tweeting about the biggest waste of time in the Universe. It's like going to a dog park not because you are a pet owner, but because you want to listen to the barking and try to avoid stepping in poo.
>> Facebook is ONLY good for my family and about 200+ ACTUAL friends (we don't friend just to friend), because we don't waste each other's time promoting nonsense so we can get a coupon on a cheese pizza topping. It's for social get-togethers and communication. People who don't get much out of Facebook aren't actually being social with it.
I could also be popular on HuffingtonPost and other sites if I started karma whoring myself out -- but that would only make me an unpaid prostitute with the marginal benefit of having lot's of followers on a blog that people hang out in to get followers -- or something.
It would be nice to submit stories, because as much as I want to stay informed, I want to kind of help push the consciousness of this country into the light in my small way.
>> So it's really up to digg if they want to be lead by people with no life and no credibility, or people who have something to say. My philosophy is; do something of value or don't do it. So if I never submit a story -- it won't be crucial to my life.
RavenshoodieJan 25, 2012
I just helped you out some.
smackertJan 25, 2012
I too have been a member since '07 and I got a story on the front page for the first time a few days ago. I just happened to have caught and interesting story from a pop news source at the right time. I know the only reason it was dugg is because no one else could submit the source. Digg is still broken.
mtownJan 25, 2012
Holy crap you joined digg just three days after I did and one day before my birthday! Enjoy a free follow.
aronononoJan 25, 2012
I submitted a story that seems to have 4,2k facebook sharings, but only two diggs still. That's weird. I guess I was late with it.
inajeepJan 26, 2012
Did it 4 times when the last big migration out. Of course one of them was me complaining about the new design. I keep plugging away.... Not sure why now but I keep trying. I don't network or use social media so I may be just wasting my time but I really don't have the time to dedicate to market my submissions.
blydchyldJan 24, 2012
Real answer?
1) Google 'Digg front page services'
2) Choose payment plan (1 off payment vs percentage of ad revenue)
3) ????
4) Front page with 90 clone puppet accounts.

How to get on the front page of Digg?
Post a tutorial of how to get on the front page of Digg, of course.
mastersaiyanJan 25, 2012
i feel ridiculous for getting the time to post this comment... been here on digg for years now... and yes all i get on submitting something is 5-6 diggs lol... well there was a time when my followers use to digg for me and i did teh same regularly... to all the good stories. not anymore,, due to which i lots hope/interest and now only check out the front page sometimes.. also i believe getting the front page is only for the big sites out there.. anytime you see top news section all giants out there.. guess digg lost the meaning of its name which was to digg out the best.. not just post in the stuff which is available on these giants and accessible easily.. so thats what i think.. i have stoped submitting anything from a quite a time now.. guess slowly am stopping to hit the digg button .. will stop visiting soon as i see.

Simple: Pay for it.
/Gotta love the bots
igorunchainedJan 24, 2012
http://digg.com/lasher70
I guess you could try submitting more stories than you Digg and then spamming them/bumping them on the front page of every newsroom until your name is the only one on the feed. Seems like there should be a better way.
polyp2000Jan 25, 2012
Im sorry , but i just can't agree with the comment "content is king" at least i would like to believe it is true - but just look at some of the articles on the front page of Digg at the moment ... "7 Stupidist things that make people proud" ,picture of a grumpy old man in various costumes, "16 celebrities with weird allergies" ... Its like this every day - which is why i read Digg , less and less these days because the system is gamed, or at least the readership has a very low baseline of what constitutes good content. One thing's for sure writing an article called "How to get on the frontpage of Digg" is a guaranteed win. - congratulations ...
evildeadashJan 25, 2012
It's not so much that the system is getting gamed because it's always been gamed. Remember "power users" and the whole s**t-storm over them? The problem nowadays is there aren't that many good contributors anymore. They all moved on to Reddit and we're dealing with the bottom of the barrel who post the most inane s**t possible.
Digg v4 killed Digg and there is no turning back from that, ever. So accept the weird allergy stories or move on like the rest of Digg did.
spatula7Jan 25, 2012
Wait, Reddit with "how to get passed first base on a date with a girl" kind of articles....if that is what you define as good contributors then Digg is certainly no worse off.
PengelJan 25, 2012
The article itself was well written and it's title got our attention. The idea of providing a guide on how to get on the front page is more of what the users wanted I'm sure, but one should just look at the top dogs on Digg for the answer.

Hi James,
Yes. You're right. Getting on the front page is indeed a big challenge. It needs more than just skills. It involves intuitive and inquisitive mind too... Formatting an interesting headline and caption like your "Disabled woman who received a prosthetic mermaid tail" raises curiosity among the readers and would surely make them Digg for more. 2 thumbs up for you James.

How to get on Digg's front page?
1) Submit something bashing FoxNews.
2) Submit something bashing Republicans or a specific Republican.
3) Submit something bashing religion, preferably Christianity.
4) Submit something praising atheism.
Those are the easiest sure bets to get on Digg's front page.
And, those are some of the reasons that Digg is still sort of a niche web site.

I loved your blog you wrote behind that 2 million hits link, and I'm a writer myself. I chose to join a cool network for writers known as hubpages, and there it helps writers worldwide to write articles and to share with others on the web. Your article about the boy who won the $10,000 was cool, because I use to always want to become an inventor myself as a child, and so I think he is an inspiration for people like me, who love trying to help others by being inventive, and by being a good informative writer. Just post something good that's happened recently and give Obama all of the credit, or post about something s**tty that's happened recently and trace it back to the republican party. That's all that's ever on the front page anyways. That or write about how drugs are secretly amazing for your health, or about how global warming is effecting global warming.

This is like my 10th account and only once did a sub of mine make it. It was a article breaking the news of a famous singer that had just died. I think the key to success is to have a network of diggers who are also linked to you on facebook/twitter. That way you can tell them to go digg your subs. Pretty sure that's how the pros here do it.
