Isn't 15-20% the norm everywhere?
Closed AccountJan 14, 2011
Uhhh...they are talking about hotels. 15-20% of WHAT? You aren't paying for the housekeeping or bellman, etc....so what you would take 154-20% from?
myztryJan 14, 2011
No. In countries like Australia it is customary and even compulsory to pay a full wage so tipping isn't required. The better the wage, the better the staff that are attracted to the job. The slackers don't get less tips. They get fired.

IT is compulsory to pay a ful wagein the US as well. On the off chance that a service monkey (which really is all waiters or maids are) don;t make minimum wage when tips are factored in, the employer must make up the diference.
So, it ends up with most less than minimum wage employees winging up with a MUCH better salary than their Autralian counterparts...and the cost to the end user is less for those that can't afford it or just want ot be cheap.

I bring my own bags to the room and don't tip for cleaning.

TIP?! After a night of intense masturbation and mentally splicing myself with the porno channel, I usually leave a hotel squinting at the maid slyly and thinking to myself "Who's gonna clean up Daddy's smelly mess huh?.. You are bitch"!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I actually found the About.com click through link more informative
flyfishnJan 14, 2011
nothing.. I haz a cheap.
generalobviousJan 14, 2011
Same as I do for everyone else who gets paid to do their job?
I don't get how hotels are any different than McDonald's workers. What, you want me to hand you a $20 because you typed a few keystrokes into a computer and checked me in? Sorry.
Tipping is really just a BS way for employers to offload expenses onto paying customers. Sorry, but it's true.
Do you tip mechanics? Do you tip programmers?
couragewulfJan 14, 2011
Depends. If I'm at a hotel for the weekend, and the cleaning crew did a great job with my room I will tip them. On New Years I woke up in my hotel covered in Dennys food and milkshake was all over. I left them a little something because I knew it would be a bitch to clean.
I don't think you should be expected to tip, but when someone goes above an beyond, they should be rewarded.

Sounds like a bitchin' New Years! The women must be ALL OVER you!

I love it when idiots like you say stupid s**t like that. Fine...they can pay them more...and do you honestly think that they are going to eat the losses? No...expect to see your rates go up by 20%.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
generalobviousJan 14, 2011
Nah, idiots just you believe that rates will spike because you're too inept to read between the lines.
somedummyJan 14, 2011
You tip the front desk $20 to get a better room.
I do this in Vegas all the time and get upgraded to better rooms and locations.
alienmushroomJan 14, 2011
$1.
pethanksJan 14, 2011
I never get the change. Lol!
specifkJan 14, 2011
Did you know it is not good manners in Ireland to tip the waiter.
alienmushroomJan 14, 2011
I don't know.
jupaneanuJan 14, 2011
I don't tip at all...cheap bastard, I know
sebdyerJan 14, 2011
I usually tip 10% at restaurants and I'll make a judgement at hotels based on the performance of the staff. Usually i'll leave some cash in the room as a tip for the cleaner...
mattmondJan 14, 2011
Will I get answer about how much I'll earn?
seroevoJan 14, 2011
I'll only tip (starting at $5) if I've left the room a total mess or spilt anything. The tip amount depends on the mess.
If I'm at a hotel where they don't even give free continental breakfast though, I'm less inclined to leave anything. I know that's punishing the maid for the hotel, but hey, they're not stripper drug addicts being blackmailed by their importer.

"Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones."

People tip at hotels?
butchthevizslaJan 14, 2011
buried for mint.com
boson3Jan 15, 2011
I never tip at hotels. Since I only spend 9-10 hours per day in the room, I'm not really using it or the supplies provided (towels, soap etc) to their fullest extent. So they're making out on my "lite" usage.
