Cheney had it proofread... And then shot the proofreader, after classifying all exchanges.

Haliburton: how about instead apologizing to humanity, Nigeria, and the American people for having the audacity to persistently support an enemy of the American people and of free people everywhere?
bdbrDec 11, 2010
I'd rather have $500 million.
goweigusDec 11, 2010
he isn't an enemy to his friends and business partners

Cool, now they have an excuse to raise oil prices by a few dollars a barrel and pass the cost on to all of us at the pump :)
addiktionDec 11, 2010
Yeah and Cheney goes free. Such ridiculousness that the rich can buy their freedom with cash while the rest of us have no choice but to face imprisonment.
sigmaman2Dec 11, 2010
When I think of Dick Cheney going to an American prison, :-)
When I think of Dick Cheney going to a Nigerian prison, 8-D

Boo what a trader. Off with his head.
searching4socksDec 11, 2010
Seems like it would be more cost effective to just let him go to prison.
miklkitDec 11, 2010
Think blackmail.
There is no honor among thieves.
whoppersauceDec 11, 2010
Good luck extraditing a former Vice-President Nigeria, also I bet there are people on both sides of this mess who would want it to go away.
Closed AccountDec 11, 2010
Well..
In this case where the crimes committed has nothing to do with his function as Vice President but CEO of a privately held company, he could easily loose that immunity in court. Difficult to claim you have immunity against crimes committed before you became VP.
dirtymerkinDec 11, 2010
Don't make me shoot you in the face Nigeria.

haha yeah those third-world scum are going to take him down.

eraptorDec 11, 2010
That's a lot of money on behalf of someone who has never "committed a crime". Is this what Dick Cheney's "presumption of innocence" is worth these days?

Because, I find it interesting.
That is apparently pocket change for some in America. So, yeah, apparently.
cyberdactylDec 11, 2010
If putting up a story as lame as this one and insinuating a government as corrupt as Nigeria has ANY actual ability to extradite Cheney to Nigeria doesn't convince the reader RAWSTORY.com has ZERO journalistic credibility, I have no earthly idea what could.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
krahzeeDec 11, 2010
Exactly. No matter how you feel about Cheney, this story is pure speculative s**t.
jimfeetDec 11, 2010
Unfortunately, I have to grudgingly agree. When I see a story from rawstory.com, I put it in the same league as faux news. I don't read anything from them either.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
angrycat70Dec 11, 2010
f**k Nigeria. They hit you up for a bribe as soon as you step off the plane.
linuxpersonDec 11, 2010
Somebody needs to take Dick out on a hunting trip and turn the tables.
ericschc1Dec 11, 2010
Given his age, a "hunting accident" would be too light a punishment. Rotting in a jail cell, possibly on life support, in some 3rd world country is more fitting.
rethreadDec 11, 2010
I like to think that is what Saudi Arabia is doing for Prince Ossama Bin Laden right now.
canadianmacfanDec 11, 2010
Wonder if we could get enough to make a counter offer in order to put him in jail? I'd kick in $5. $10 if it was for a jail in Nigeria.
shingoexDec 11, 2010
He needs to be locked up anyway for being a war criminal. May as well throw him in prison for something.
cmp121cmpDec 11, 2010
Title says: "$500 million to keep Cheney out of prison"
Article says: "as much as 500 million" and then "It's not clear from the GlobalPost report if the $500 million figure refers to the amount Halliburton will have to pay, or whether that amount would cover all the companies that have been charged."
Article also fails to explain how an international lawsuit from Nigeria would land Cheney in prison.
rethreadDec 11, 2010
Article implies immunity can be purchased. Mostly true, throughout the world, when you have the right friends.
anomaly100Dec 11, 2010
When Dick goes to Hell, I heard Satan will have to bow to him.
rethreadDec 11, 2010
And here I thought he was just an intern.
anomaly100Dec 11, 2010
Nah, the interns are the ones digging the comment down;-)
thisisbobDec 11, 2010
Apparently in Nigeria you can't screw people without a condom either.
RobertaGerrickDec 11, 2010
If he broke the law he should go to prison. I was not aware that you could pay for freedom. Maybe we should tell the people sitting in prison
trdrstvDec 14, 2010
"I was not aware that you could pay for freedom."
SURE you can! Nigeria just takes the bulls**t dressing off the case and calls it like it is. "It will cost you this much to stay out of our federal pound you in the ass prison."
krahzeeDec 11, 2010
They are basically being shaken down for a fine, much like they were undoubtedly shook down for the bribes in the first place.
Think what you want of Cheney, but paying bribes is very often the cost of doing business in the third world.
The Nigerian government took advantage of the legal proceedings in the U.S. to score a quick settlement from companies with MUCH more to lose should they be forced to stop doing business there....
Thing is, there is no way in hell Cheney or any other US politician gets extradited on bribery case to a 3rd world country like Nigeria.
Halliburton will pay a fine and still be in business there this time next year....Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rethreadDec 11, 2010
Think Somali Pirates, North Korea, Iran, Coca-Cola in India... Leverage for money/supplies. Lawsuits over anything to get something, cost of doing business.
Corporate has the money, because that's where the tax shelters are. And when ya hide all the money, there's always going to be a treasure hunter looking to dig it up :)
See: Gold Digger.

The attempts this man has made at defending torture have caused tremendous damage and harm to the United States. Where's the humility? Where's the humanity? All I see is hate and a philosophy that says that the ends justified the means. It's indefensible.

For $10,000 you can blow yourself up in Iraq/Afghanistan and have your family cared for. I know, it's f**king sad.
warpfieldDec 11, 2010
Half billion huh. Goes to show you what Cheney was capable of getting for his friends if he's worth that much out of jail.
ecoreDec 11, 2010
Yes, I wonder what he did to justify a Half Bil being spent on him.
Oh yeh...Iraq oil fields worth far more than a half bil.
That's so obvious.....so obvious. Either that or Dick can give a hell of a head job.
imarascalDec 11, 2010
How about his contracts in Iraq.???Several years ago read that "they" provided unpurified water to service members. This company deservesinmvestigation by the Justice Dept.Let the Republicans cry over that!
miklkitDec 11, 2010
It is true. The water trucks went down to the Euphrates river and filled up, then rolled back to the barracks and sold the water to our Army without even filtering the mud out. There were many other outrages as well, but I still have only one item left to show you.

rockarollrDec 11, 2010
And they say crime doesn't pay.... HA! It sure seemed to work for Dick Cheney!
If he ends up getting away, scot-free, with everything he did while in office then maybe the history books should be rewritten to attach the "Tricky Dick" moniker to Cheney instead of Nixon.

dick cheney may be a dick, but nigeria is being ridiculous. 500 million dollars is more than nigeria's GDP. That's like if the US demanded 13 trillion from afghanistan for harboring osama. it's even more ludicrous than the demands of dr. evil.
It'd cost less to just nuke nigeria and forget about it.
exactly how does nigeria expect to enforce their will on dick cheney?
I say we just ignore nigeria, they robbed plenty of US citizens. they don't deserve any justice, they're just a country full of people just as corrupt as cheney. they'd use that 500 million to kill and control people.

On Digg, I meet the most splendid people. They often make me want to start most of my comments with "Wow..", but I refrained. Wait, on secon... WOW!!! You, I am pleased to inform, are quite possibly a moron!! Think about what new and exciting things you can pick up, like, NOT POSTING ON DIGG!! :-D Seriously though, think about all the kittens and orphans that are dying everyday, just because you wont kill yourself already. Im just f**king with you of course, though your name both makes me want to crawl into my own anus and at the same time take a big whiff of air for the side splitting laughter that is about to commence.... HAHAHA!! unstoppableintellect. Let me type that once more. unstoppableintellect. How old are you? Im not sure if Digg has a profile feature, and I dont give enough of a f**k to find out, but if you were trying to fool everyone to thinking you were 16 or 17, you did an amazing job! Two gold stars.
Now thats done, I cant splode meh load, and get done with this comment. I think Ill start at this comment (Though I may backtrack ROLFCOPTER!!!1@1):
"I say we just ignore nigeria, they robbed plenty of US citizens. they don't deserve any justice, they're just a country full of people just as corrupt as cheney."
Now, thats a pretty damnatory statement. I hope this is a righteous and just person! Oh s**t...
"It'd cost less to just nuke nigeria and forget about it.
exactly how does nigeria expect to enforce their will on dick cheney?"
You, my friend, are, if not a moron, a simpleton. I dont think you are a purposefully ugly person on the inside. You must not support "justice for all" because your knowledge of Neitzsche totally, like, showed you that, you know, like that justice is all relative and that, um, nihilism rocks. Doofus.

FTA: Although Nigeria has long had a reputation for being corrupt itself, anti-corruption campaigners said these new charges shed light on the destructive role that major multinational firms play.
