Remember when Google came on the scene, and their whole thing was that Microsoft was "the man", and that we must rebel against "the man"? Guess who the man is now, Big G.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Google is big, but what does it do that is so horrible? I have not figured out this yet. Somebody want to clue me in as I can't see why people say they are a big terrible company just yet.
shadowtheweakJul 10, 2011
Giving information to government agencies and basically keeping records/data on everyone who uses them. Theres probably more to it, but thats all i've got off the top of my head.

Well..the very reason why they are getting investigated is because SEVERAL independent complaints have been filed with sufficient evidence to warrant an anti-trust investigation...for Google doing pretty much EXACTLY that Microsoft was investigated for...Using their search monopoly to unfairly promote their own services over others. In Google's case, there have been several complaints that they give their own services precedence in their search page even though those services would NOT get top result status naturally. That is a violating of anti-trust laws, plain and simple. Just like Microsoft leveraging their OS monopoly to promote IE over Netscape was a violation of anti-trust laws.
There are also plenty of complaints from advertisers and web site owners who have had terrible experiences with Ad Sense.
You just choose to overlook them.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

They do not have a monopoly; many people use yahoo, bing, etc.
Monopoly:
an exclusive privilege to carry on a business, traffic, or service, granted by a government.
or
exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market, or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices.
Key word: EXCLUSIVE
Schweppesale2Jul 9, 2011
It's not even remotely the same.
Windows is an Operating System. Google is a website which provides search(nothing new).
If you don't like Google then it's simply a matter of typing some other competitors url into your address bar.
Changing your OS on the other hand requires $$$
99% of all personal computers shipped came with Windows pre-installed.

Google's only crime in this case has been that they are in fact, very good at what they do.
phitzoneJul 9, 2011
Uh, Google is WAY more than just a search engine, which they compete for. They compete with MS on web browsers, email... even document creation. Google's goal from the get go has been to crush MS. The only thing that they don't compete on right now, other than the gaming side, is in the OS market.
thechauvinistJul 9, 2011
...which they are working on currently. Chrome OS
phitzoneJul 10, 2011
And there you have it.
Schweppesale2Jul 10, 2011
Have what?
So they're working on an OS?
Microsoft was only deemed a monopoly because it shipped with Internet Explorer built into the freaking kernel.
You can't uninstall IE; which is the point.
rotfoxJul 10, 2011
As a businesses competition is kinda key isn't it? I mean it's not like Google is blocking anybody else from competing with them unlike what Microsoft did back when it was deemed anti-competitive.
Btw you still haven't answered my question as to what Google does that makes them "The Man"
phitzoneJul 10, 2011
Fair enough. When a company becomes as big, powerful (yes, they are powerful), and have their hands in as much as they do, they ARE the man.
rotfoxJul 10, 2011
MMmm, dunno if I agree with you on the terms of "The Man" (I find that it's more of an oppressive title that you'd gain for yourself.) But I'll leave it at that.
Schweppesale2Jul 10, 2011
Sorry to break it to you but not all big companies are monopolies. Some of them are just that good.
Monopoly:
1.exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market, or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices. Compare duopoly, oligopoly.
2.an exclusive privilege to carry on a business, traffic, or service, granted by a government.
3.the exclusive possession or control of something.

Google does not meet any of these conditions

Wrong...Microsoft didn't block others from competing. Aple was aroundd and they didn't block them
Meanwhile, Google IS blocking others. Because when someone searches for something that used to yield a competitor's page as a top result, suddenly, and for NO valid reason, google's new service shows up first. IT did not EARN its way to the top of the search results. And the results page makes no mention that it was given preferential treatment.
Again...as much as you desperately want to suck Sergey's c**k, here is the thing...the people investigating them are FAR smarter than you even lie about being. And they know far more about the law than you ever will.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Wow, You really need to learn how to write properly. I couldn't make out anything in between the insults you were spewing.
Schweppesale2Jul 10, 2011
You have no idea what you're talking about.
Apple and Microsoft are both the worst offenders when it comes to stomping out competition.

Google's search results are based on a page rank algorithm.
The more people link to a specific page; the higher it's ranking.

Well..."compete" may not be the correct word. Unless you consider a best little league team in New York to be competing against the Yankees. IE has more than double the users of Chrome. Hotmail has more than 3 times as many users as Gmail. Office has about 100 times as many users as Google Docs. (that is not an exaggeration, by the way.)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Doesn't matter how "easy" it is to use another. Google meets the legal definition of monopoly.
(Gee...maybe, just maybe the Senate committee understand more about anti-trust laws than you do?)
Plus, it WAS very easy to use a different OS in the 90s. Simply buy a Mac.
Google's only crime is that they are using their search monopoly to promote their inferior OTHER services that people would not normally be searching for.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

By the way, just to show your ignorance of pretty much everything...the Microsoft trial had nothing to do with Microsoft stifling competition to Windows. It was about USING their monopoly in Windows to stifle competition for Internet Explorer. They used a product/service in which they had a legal monopoly to give an unfair advantage to a new service they were offering in an attempt to take down the market leader.
And that is EXACTLY what Google is accused of doing. By several people who have given enough evidence as to warrant an investigation.
If google was just "too good at what they do" then they would have no problem ranking their services as they would if it was not a Google page. Rank it based on its merit. But they don't because they know that no one cares about those services so it will never move up the rankings naturally.
If they weren't under investigation now, chances are they would have had it so if someone searched on social networking the first reult would be Google+Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

google makes new strategy again...keep rocking..

Huh? I can't tell if this is just a circlejerk comment or if you are confused. How is this a new strategy? they are under investigation and he is testifying (he really didn't have all that much choice) This is not a strategy...it is damage control.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
