thechannelc.com — When Google launched Goggles this week, I had to read it twice. It looked like Google x 2. The iPhones auto-incorrect isnt helping either.
Google Goggles is inside the Google Mobile iPhone app and the coolest thing about it is that you can now do searches by taking a picture with your iPhone or speaking into it.
Ive been playing around with it these few days and Im not too happy with the voice search. The app has no problem hearing me but the results it brought back were all in Singapore, hundreds and hundreds of miles away. All I said was KFC and I know one within walking distance, no, I was staring at it. Same thing happened when I searched for pizza. So I decided to search for thechannelc and I got The Chelsea. One more time and I got Gretchen Rossi.
Ok, so it works very well for restaurant searches in a neighboring country now lets try photo search. I took a shot of a billboard today and Google Goggles scan picked up the advertisers logo and instantly brought up the companys webpage. Whoa, that was impressive. Next I took a picture of my dog hoping Google will bring back some useful information on his breed, dog training tips and pet stores nearby but it could not recognize the image. I was expecting too much.
I do think GG has a lot of potential. The picture search feature reminded me of an augmented reality concept where you can point your camera phone at someones face and see all his digital profiles like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin (including prison record) pop up on the screen. This is a giant step for mankind right here. Oops. I hope my saying that wont jinx Google Goggles. I said that about Google Wave when it came out and look what happened. Well, until that happens, Im going to enjoy GG. Theres a plant I really really want to know more about. I wonder if GG can help?
