this makes it a lot easier for china to just reverse engineer the parts and make their own ten years from now, then sell back their inferior version to us, losing us yet more jobs.
hurray globalization.

It's gonna suck when steering wheel columns start breaking off.

Actually, it's irrelevant at this point.
In order for foreign companies to sell their cars in China, they have to partner with a Chinese automaker. The Chinese automaker then needs to be taught how to assemble these cars. GM, Ford, Toyota, etc can't just waltz into China, and set up their own independent plants. They MUST give away all of their trade secrets to Chinese companies in order to sell cars there.
This means eventually those chinese companies will create their own R&D departments, their own design studios (actually, they already have their own design studios), and will start putting out world-class vehicles.
They'll then either kick all foreign automakers out, or they'll out-compete them. They'll then start selling their cars state-side for a lot less, and even foreign car companies will need to have their cars built in China in order to stay cost-competitive.
China wins either way.
You think the trade deficit is bad now? Just wait until China takes over the auto industry, followed by the consumer electronics industry.

Which is why auto-workers need to spend less time unionizing and more time innovating.
agmlauncherJan 25, 2011
Agreed. For all the pay and benefits they get, they do a sloppy job putting together vehicles. If they don't start competing with foreign labor in terms of quality of work, they'll lose out. The ONLY thing saving their ass is sometimes it works out to be cheaper to produce the vehicle locally rather than import it, but when it comes to China, that cost advantage will be irrelevant.
elmuerte17Jan 25, 2011
Yeah, China's gonna want to reverse engineer American cars... instead of say, Japanese or European.
enantiodromiaJan 25, 2011
Of course they are going to reverse engineer the s**ttier cheaper cars. This is China.

Nice

Great! So people complain that we are importing too much from China and the trade imbalance that results. Now when there's news that we're exporting to China they complain about them reverse engineering our parts or something (a task that could be performed with a single sample part - they don't need millions of dollars of the same parts to reverse engineer something).
When will people stop whining? How about we stop all trade with those scary Chinese? If it has the word China in it, there will be crying one way or another.
effyochickenJan 25, 2011
Well it's about time we started swapping places with China.

Lets see here, GM gets bail out with taxpayer money, they spend that
money on cheap mexican labor to produce parts that the mexicans
ship to China and this is good for US taxpayers?
Closed AccountJan 25, 2011
GM will export parts from where? The article didn't say US, most of the GM parts are built outside the US in mexico and canada.
sampankeawjamJan 25, 2011
China is a big market, every company need these share.
GM has long experience car maker.
I think , good stategy for recover a profit.
microntechJan 25, 2011
Will this help pay off our debt to China?
eraptorJan 26, 2011
Considering the gargantuan trade imbalance with China, it's minor trade gestures amount to "too little too late".
