Obamarama did say we were going to be plastering the 'made in America' stamp everywhere.

China is the new Detroit.

I'm quite surprised that we haven't had a car in the US with a made in China label on it already

You are ignoring one VERY important piece of that puzzle. China has been the world's manufacturing center for 1 reason. CHEAP labor. Here in the US we have no cheap labor. The unions have effectively killed American manufacturing. It is cheaper to build plants in other countries like China and Mexico to build. Try to remember businesses aren't charities. They exist to turn a profit and their aim is to maximize those profits. They don't exist to employ people.

I get what you're saying, but the bigger pays you guys get the more you can afford to consume, and the more you consume, the more you need to produce. It's a cycle that sustains itself.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
We here in the US need to learn to consume less and save more. Stop living for the moment and forgetting about tomorrow.

Well, yeah, from a moral standpoint, you may be right. But economically, it doesn't make sense. I'm just trying to be as pragmatic as possible.
I'm not even an US citizen so I don't give a rat's ass, but things aren't as black & white as they may seem. If you change a thing as big as that you mess with the whole balance of things. You can't change something like that and not change the whole system. And there's a pretty big chance what you change it into will suck even more.

Yea, lets just ignore the fact that China artificially manipulates their currency to make their labor (and everything else) cheaper....

Don't worry, it's only a matter of time. GM is using your tax dollars to teach the Chinese how to mass produce autos. Once they do, GM will no longer be needed.
norman619Feb 2, 2011
What bulls**t. China knows mass production. GM isn't the the first car manufacturer to look to setting up production in China.
Please don't spread the stupid.

Asia got rich building everything they could at home then exporting and selling it here. That created jobs, which created wealth and prosperity. We get the chance to do that same and what does GM do? Build the plants over there!
It's so nice our own taxpayer money is being used to f**k us with. I swear I will never buy a GM product ever.

They don't have unions in China

Aren't you glad Uncle Sam resurrected General Motors instead of backing financially solid American automakers like Ford?
